But it was.
It was cold. Villanelle's body was surrounded by it, she could feel any warmth she had left in her drain away. She was freezing.
And Eve.. poor Eve..
Eve was reaching as hard as she could to grab Villanelle's hand, but the movement of the water pulled Villanelle away from her. Eve was running out of breath, she could feel her lungs burning in anticipation for more air. She needed to surface, she needed to leave Villanelle. But leaving the girl she had wanted for so long, alone and cold.. it felt agonizing.
She surfaced, swallowing breaths like there was no tomorrow. Her heart was pounding rapidly, She looked down and saw nothing, no Villanelle, no blood, just the dark, empty abyss of water. Eve was horrified, she just wanted to grab Villanelle and hold her. She screamed in anguish, everything had gone so right and now everything was going so wrong. Eve dived back down, the cold water burning her eyes. She looked around frantically, trying to spot Villanelle. She was panicking, frantically swimming as deep as she could, trying her hardest to ignore the building pressure in her ears, until she spotted her. Despite being so far deep in the water, Villanelle looked like she was glowing, she looked angelic. The blood slowly flowing out of her wounds like wings. Eve grabbed Villanelles arms and draped them around her own shoulders, holding Villanelles hands as she swam to the surface as fast as her legs would take her. She swam to the closest surface and pulled herself and Villanelle out.
Villanelle's skin was icy to the touch, she felt so cold. Eve sobbed and screamed for someone, anyone, to help them. Apparently, somebody already had, paramedics rushedly put Villanelle's limp, frigid body on the gurney, and whisked her away, Eve didn't even get the chance to touch her hand one last time before she was robbed from her. Eve stood up quickly and started following them, but someone stopped her.
"Eve.. I'm so sorry.."
It was Pam, Eve remembered her. She was the mortician girl who saved Villanelle's life after the arrow incident, it seemed like Pam had a knack for saving Villanelle.
"Pam? Wha- why are you here?" Eve asked frantically, trying to see over her shoulder to watch the paramedics load Villanelle into the ambulance.
"Because I knew this was going to happen.." Pam sounded ashamed, she rubbed her forearm with her opposite hand.
"What do you mean? Did you have something to do with this!?" Eve shouted, pointing a finger right in Pam's face, Eve didn't care if Pam was the reason Villanelle would live if Pam was the reason Villanelle was dying in the first place.
"No! I-I.. I know who did this to her though." Pam said worriedly, looking around to make sure that the assailant wasn't near.
Pam swallowed thickly and lowered her voice, "It was Carolyn. She asked me to do the hit first but I said no."
Eve's anguish from Villanelle instantly shifted to unbridled rage towards Carolyn. She trusted Carolyn for so long, and first finding out Carolyn was working with the Twelve.. now this. Eve was just about ready to strangle the woman with her bare hands. Eve clenched her jaw and her fists, fantasizing all the horrific things she wanted to make Carolyn endure.
"Do you know where she is now?" Eve asked, trying to sound calm.
"No.. but I don't think she's left the country yet." Pam responded, sounding unsure and nervous.
3 hours. 3 hours was all it took for Eve to hunt down Carolyn, she had Carolyn cornered in an alleyway, a pistol to her head, and Carolyn didn't even look scared.
"Well if you're going to kill me, Eve, just get it over with already." Carolyn said simply, but that wasn't enough for Eve. Eve wanted her to be scared, Eve wanted her to suffer.
Eve whacked Carolyn in the jaw with the barrel of the gun, Carolyn was put aback but quickly regained her composure after spitting out some blood. Carolyn felt confident Eve wasn't going to kill her.
"Do you even know why I'm doing this to you?" Eve asked, her voice shaking with rage.
"Assuming you and Villanelle got to the Twelve already, I'm the only one left, no?" Carolyn asked, laughing slightly.
Eve struck her jaw again. "Don't fucking laugh at this. Guess again." Eve said, glaring holes into Carolyn's skull.
"Perhaps someone put you up to this?" Carolyn asked, raising an eyebrow quizzically. It was clear to Eve that she wasn't taking this seriously.
Eve lowered her gun and wrapped her hand around Carolyn's throat and squeezed, putting all her anger, peril, and trauma into her grip.
"This isn't a fucking game Carolyn. I know you were the one who put the hit on Villanelle." Eve said, her voice sounded strained from her putting all her power into the chokehold. Carolyn was wheezing, her breaths were barely that, and her exterior confidence was quickly dropped.
Carolyn no longer felt confident Eve wasn't going to kill her. Eve released her grip on Carolyn's throat, Carolyn coughed violently.
Eve held her gun up again, and finally, to Eve's liking, Carolyn looked scared. Eve put her finger on the trigger slowly, and shot Carolyn in the throat. Carolyn choked and blood poured from her mouth onto the concrete below them, she fell to her knees and held her throat, her eyes were begging to Eve but Eve was relentless, and watched as Carolyn choked to death on her own blood and her own guilt. When Eve was sure Carolyn was dead she put her pistol back into her waterlogged jeans and began the trek to the hospital, she needed to see Villanelle.
Eve entered Villanelle's hospital room and all the color drained from her face. Villanelle looked like death, she was pale and hooked up to countless machines. Eve's heart beated a mile a minute, she approached Villanelle's bed.
She didn't like seeing Villanelle like this.. broken, weak, she just wanted to be safe and happy with Villanelle..
"Her condition isn't good. She lost a lot of blood. I'm honestly surprised she still had a pulse when we got her into the ambulance." A doctor said from behind Eve, making her jump.
"Do you think she'll make it?" Eve asked cautiously, taking Villanelle's hand in hers. Her hand was cold, Eve felt sick, the coldness of her skin just made her think of how dead she looked when she pulled her from the water.
"Honest answer.. I don't know, she lost a lot of blood.." The doctor wrote down a few things from the monitors before exiting.
Eve pulled a chair beside Villanelle's bed, holding her cold hand, trying to warm it with hers.
"I got her, V. But.. she's right, the Twelve is just gonna be replaced by the higher ups.. they might connect us to Carolyn's death.. whenever you get better, we have to leave."
Eve laid her head down onto Villanelle's torso, it felt like absolutely no heat was radiating off of Villanelle, Eve had to double check the heart monitors a few times because of how cold she was. Eve eventually let herself fall asleep.
6 weeks.
It had been 6 weeks since Villanelle was shot.. since she nearly died.. 42 days since Eve got to hear her voice.. got to kiss her warm lips..
Eve still visited every day, but with every passing day she became more cautious, the Twelve was no doubt replaced by now, she had to watch her back, especially since they're probably still after Villanelle. Eve sat back down in her chair, greeting the doctor she'd been seeing every day.
"Morning, Eve." The doctor greeted with a soft smile.
"Any updates?" Eve asked hopefully.
"Nothing yet, she's very stable, we're hoping she wakes up any day now." The doctor replied before leaving Eve to it.
Eve sighed, fantasizing about all the things she wanted to experience with Villanelle was dulling, she wanted to do them. Staring at Villanelle's cold frame made her frown, she wanted to hug and warm her up, but she wasn't allowed since V was still healing. Eve decided to scroll mindlessly on her phone, as she'd been doing for all 42 other days, until she heard rustling. Her head immediately shot up from her phone to look at Villanelle, who's eyes were fluttering open and she was carefully stretching her, no doubt, stiff and tense muscles.
"Eve?" Villanelle asked, her voice felt as wonderful as the sun shining in Spring. Eve dropped her phone and rushed to Villanelle's side.
"Villanelle." Eve replied with a smile, a genuine, wonderful, beautiful smile that made Villanelle fall in love with her all over again.
They were ripped apart once again by multiple nurses and doctors coming to check Villanelle's condition, but knowing she was awake, and she was going to be okay, was all it took to make Eve feel content. Their happiness was so close.
When the doctors were done fussing over Villanelle, they informed the two that Villanelle could be discharged in a few days, as she was healing incredibly well.
When they were finally alone in the room again, Eve immediately kissed Villanelle. Her lips didn't feel cold, she didn't feel cold anymore. It was like Eve being with her was her warmth, it was as if Villanelle wasn't the sun, but Eve was her sun. Their kiss felt like heaven on earth. All of Eve's sorrow and longing were poured into one display of affection and Villanelle could feel it.
"I love you." Eve blurted after she pulled away from Villanelle.
"I know." Villanelle responded with a smirk, Eve glared at her, making Vilanelle giggle.
"I love you too, Eve."
