Chapter Text
It had to be Barbara's favourite sight in the world.
"𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥."
Old vinyl was scratching on a turntable in the corner of the room. Dick was stood by the sink, elbow deep in soapy water, oblivious to the world around him.
He was singing an octave lower than the record, his voice mixing gently over the sound of running water.
"𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘐 𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘐 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭."
Dick's head began to sway to the music, free hand coming up to a fist by his chest in mock-passion as he followed the words.
For such an incredible acrobat, Dick was quite possibly the dorkiest dancer in the world. Every time Barbara caught him like this, she couldn't help but stop & stare at this beautiful, ridiculous nerd she'd had the honour of falling in love with.
"𝘐 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐'𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘰𝘩 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺."
She finally dropped her bag by the door, walking towards Dick & wrapping her arms around his middle.
"Glad to see the records I got you are being put to good use." She murmured between his shoulder blades. The sensation made him shiver slightly, before turning his head to the side to address her better.
"You called it. New Kids are the music of my soul."
She hummed into his back in agreement. "Told you so."
Dick smirks, turning off the tap & wiping his hands off on a nearby rag. He twisted around to face her, one hand immediately finding the small of her back, the other pulling her hand away from his side.
"Yes, you did," Dick considered, pulling the both of them away from the kitchen counter, "& now you have to face the consequences."
He smirked as he began to waltz her around the small kitchen, Barbara bursting into a fit of giggles, stumbling clumsily as Dick led her about.
"Dick! Quit it, you weirdo!" There's no venom in her voice as she laughed at him over the music.
"Nope!" He responded in kind, "You promised me impromptu dance parties!" Dick let go of her waist & twirled her by her hand, before pulling her back in even closer than before. "I'm simply claiming said impromptu dance party."
Barbara finally gave up the fight, wrapping her arms over Dick's shoulders as both his hands came to hold her waist, swaying her gently.
As the two slow danced in place, Dick continued singing softly to her.
"𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥, 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯, 𝘐 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐'𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶."
Barbara looked up at him doe-eyed, taking in the way he flushed lightly when she did so. He smiled at her, gently leaning in. She met him half way, pulling him down by his neck into a slow, deep, honey-sweet kiss.
Dick pulled away just enough so that their foreheads were pressed together.
His voice was low & gentle when he spoke. "Hey, Barb, I've been thinking, I-"
Their moment was cut short by the blaring of a telephone. Dicks eyes flicked between the source of the noise & the woman in his arms, as if desperately trying to find a reason to not answer the call, but he eventually decided to step away & pick up the phone.
He gave Barbara a short, apologetic hand signal as he answered.
"Hello?"
"Dickie. Need a favour. Now, preferably."
Dick sighed, rolling his eyes. "Nice to hear from you too, Jason."
"I'll send you coordinates. See you soon."
"Hey, hang on, I've not even agreed t-!"
The call went dead before he could even finish his sentence. Dick pulled the phone away from his ear, glaring at it in offense as if Jason could see him through the screen.
"Given that I heard the word 'Jason', I presume it's not good." Barbara commented, stepping closer.
Dick raked his free hand over his face tiredly. "He was very, 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 nondescript, but I think 'not good' is a safe assumption to make." He shoved the phone back onto the counter a little more aggressively than necessary. "Jesus, Jason, really? Right now?"
Barbara giggled at him, pulling him down by the collar of his shirt for a short, chaste kiss.
"Go help your baby brother," she said, patting him on the cheek. "I promise I'll still be here when you get back."
Dick gave her a look like a kicked puppy, before kissing her quickly on the forehead & walking towards their bedroom sulkily.
"Let me just grab my suit."
