Chapter Text
Seoyoung was in the living room reading a book when Mari suddenly joined her with a mug of hot cocoa in her hands.
"Hey, Mari. Dinner will be ready in an hour. You might wanna take it easy with the hot cocoa tonight."
Mari hummed and proceeds to sip on her mug. Seoyoung looked concerned.
“You’re awfully quiet today. Something on your mind?” Seoyoung asked.
"Mom? What were they like?"
"Hm? Who?"
"My biological parents. You said you knew them. What were they like? How'd they met? And how'd they fall in love?"
"I guess you are of age now to know about your parents. Let's start with your mothers' names first! The one who you mostly look-alike is Goeun. Your other mother’s name is Chaeyoung."
Goeun was a very beautiful woman and a great singer as well. She was very popular back in the day. Probably one of the reasons why Chaeyoung fell in love with her.
Chaeyoung on the other hand was the whole package. Attractive, talented, even her personality was Goeun's ideal preference. To Goeun, she was the perfect woman. The living embodiment of her ideal type.
"That sounds so cringy. Was my mother really like that?" Mari asked as she furrowed her eyebrows.
"Goeun's words, not mine. But as Chaeyoung's best friend, I can certainly agree with some of what she said. Chaeyoung was one of a kind. When she started courting Goeun, Goeun just couldn't resist her. She’d hug and kiss her every chance she gets. It used to be Chaeyoung’s thing but the longer they dated, the faster the tables turned. And before you knew it, they were dating and eventually got married years later."
"Oh my gosh, mothers." Mari facepalmed in shame. Seoyoung chuckled at the sight of her child being embarrassed.
"As I was saying…"
Goeun loved Chaeyoung for the way she is. Why wouldn't she? Chaeyoung was the whole package in Goeun's eyes. But even before Goeun knew her that well, Chaeyoung really was attractive and talented.
"Okay, now you're the one who sounds gay for mother, mom."
"Hey! I'm just describing Chaeyoung to you. Plus, I'm happily married to Eunseong, Mari. Thank you very much."
"Whatever, mom."
"Can I continue?"
"Hmmm… how about you tell me how my mothers met this time? I know they fell in love and junk and got married. It’s kinda cliche actually. But I wanna know how it all started."
"That's honestly for your parents to tell since I'm not always with them that much anymore when they started dating." Seoyoung explained.
"Can you at least tell me what you know?" Mari asked as she sipped on a cup of hot cocoa.
"Alright alright. I'll tell you what I know.." Seoyoung agreed.
"I'll tell you some of what I know too." Eunseong said as she sat next to Seoyoung while eating one of Seoyoung’s Pokemon bread.
Chaeyoung was new to the company. A newly hired producer. And surprisingly her first project was with Goeun. She grew up in a family of geniuses. Her parents are well-known musicians, and her sister was an artist and a model. Chaeyoung was so gifted with music that she composed and produced a lot of songs in one sitting.
"Of course, your mother was impressed by this." Eunseong said.
Goeun on the other hand was in charge of the demos and the vocal guides before she even had a chance to sing songs for her own career as a soloist.
One time, they were working on a song together. Goeun was too preoccupied with something, so Chaeyoung had a chance to write a song about her.
"I honestly don't know what song she wrote about her. Do you know, Eunseong?" Seoyoung asked.
"I don't know which one it is either." Eunseong answered.
"That's a shame. I wanted to know what my mother composed about my other mother."
"Well, we did say we'll tell what we know. We weren't there when it happened."
"But you think that song got my mothers to fall in love with one another?" Mari asked.
"Well… There's that, the constant times of working together on projects-" Eunseong said.
"They were just so good together, so the CEO had them work together a lot." Seoyoung butted in.
"And of course, the dates your mothers went out to." Eunseong continued.
Mari was in awe and laughed. But then her smile faded.
"What's wrong, Mari?" Eunseong asked.
"Uhm… Did you know how my mothers died?" Mari asked, lowering her head and playing with her fingers in the process.
"Ahh… that's two different stories. Whose do you want to know first?" Seoyoung asked.
"Hmm… in chronological order I guess? To makes things easier."
Seoyoung turned to Mari and placed her hand on the latter's shoulder.
"You sure you want to know now?"
"I'm their biological child. Don't you think I have the right to know by now?"
"She has a point, Seoyoung."
Seoyoung sighed while Eunseong got up and prepared dinner.
"I suppose you are old enough to know about your biological parents. All I can say in advance is that both their deaths were unbearable to accept. And only one of their deaths we have witnessed." Seoyoung said.
"Wait, what? What do you mean by that?" Mari asked as she put her mug of hot cocoa on the coffee table.
Seoyoung held her hand dearly. Her eyes started to get teary and this concerned Mari.
“Everything started in the hospital.”
