It’s December 3rd . Jisoo is staring at the panoramic view of the Han river in their apartment. Jisoo had long thought of the best and perfect birthday present she could give to her boyfriend. Its not like she hadn’t brought him a surface present. It’s a present you just give a present for the sake of hiding the real present you’re going to give. Despite the promotions for her new drama, the practices, the endorsement shoots, and the gaming, Jisoo had brought Jin a gift. Multiple gifts, actually. She bought him a digital gift card for his Maplestory in-game purchases. She also bought him an RJ stuffed doll. Lastly, she bought him a diamond encrusted ‘J’ necklace.
All the dinner preparations are done. Jisoo had specifically cleared out her schedule for tonight and the whole day of the 4th for Seokjin’s birthday. All she has to do now is wait for Seokjin to come home from his schedule so they could have dinner on midnight to celebrate Seokjin’s birthday.
Seokjin and Jisoo had celebrated Seokjin’s birthday ever since they started dating. If asked why, Jisoo would say that she wanted to be the last person before Seokjin ends his year cycle and the first person when he starts another year. Seokjin thinks its sweet and he just goes with the flow.
“Let’s break up,” Jisoo said exactly at 12 midnight. This was the main present that she has instore for Seokjin. For the first time tonight, she had finally looked at Seokjin’s face. He was taken a back. Jisoo knows that Seokjin knows that this time, the break up is real. And Seokjin knows that she had already made up her mind.
With a broken voice Seokjin asked, “Did I do something wrong? Was there a dating scandal going around?” Seokjin reached for Jisoo’s hand. She let him. Jisoo also wanted to be touched—to be comforted.
Jisoo doesn’t cry easily. Tonight, she was. Tonight, she wasn’t holding back her tears because she was hurting. So much. She just shook her head to Seokjin’s questions. He was such to be a delight to be in a relationship with. He was thoughtful, attentive, giving—he was perfect. Jisoo couldn’t even ask for more.
Seokjin stood up and knelt in front of Jisoo. He was wiping the tears off of her face. See? This was what Jisoo was talking about. Seokjin was always the one taking care of her. “Baby, what’s wrong? Why are we breaking up?” Seokjin was now caressing her cheek and she was leaning onto his warm hands.
Jisoo removed his hands from her face and placed it on her lap. Seokjin was holding on tight. “Baby, we need to be more honest with ourselves. You don’t love me anymore.” She told him.
Seokjin had looked more confused than ever. “What do you mean? I love you, Jisoo.”
Jisoo felt that Seokjin’s grip had tightened around her hands. Jisoo held onto his hands too. She wants to hold on to this relationship as long as she can. But the more that she holds on, the more that both of them will get hurt. She doesn’t want that. It’s okay to hurt now than to feel guilt and regret later.
She was finally letting go now. “You love me but its not the same way anymore. And its okay.” Jisoo slowly stood up as she finally let both their hand go. Seokjin was just staring at her. “Or you just love the idea of us. I don’t know, Jin. But all I know and all I can see is that the shimmer in your eyes when you look at me is gone now. I know you love me but maybe in some other way.”
Jisoo knows that its not her anymore. She is not the one that make Jin happy. And right now, right at this moment, it was clear as day that she was only the path the Jin takes in order to realize the way to his real happiness.
“You are not in love with me anymore. It hurting me right now. We both are. It’s okay. We are going to be okay. Not now but soon.” Jisoo said before she went on her tiptoes and planted a kiss on his lips. It would have been just a peck but Seokjin had held her waist to place her on her feet. He leaned down and kissed Jisoo.
Maybe it was Jin pleading her to stay but Jisoo is standing on her ground to let him go. Letting him go will make him happy. He may not understand it now. It will all make sense if he opens up to it.
Jisoo pulled out of the kiss before it makes her change her mind.
“Goodbye, Jin,” she said.
Her hands was on the door knob when he asked his eye opener “If I’m not in love with you, who am I in love with?”
She smiled bitterly and said. “Your eternal roommate.”
It hadn’t slipped her when she saw Seokjin’s tears starting to fall with the sudden realization that hit him.
She walked out of the door as she was walking out of his life. What a perfect simile to end a perfect relationship.
