Work Text:

Perhaps you were being a bit…”petty”. But at the moment you couldn’t care less. You’ve hardly seen your boyfriend for the last couple weeks because of business. Unlike the others residing in Overwatch headquarters, you were simply a scientist rather than a “hero.” You worked in various locations around the base to make sure everything was in working order.

But that wasn’t what you were worried about at the moment. In the past three weeks, Genji has rarely been home. If that’s what he would even call it. If you asked, he would probably say something cheesy to make you smile, like “home is where you are.” But you knew staying in one place too long made him antsy.

He loved the thrill of the fight, and that was something you’d come to accept.

What you haven’t come to accept, was him being gone on missions all the time. Things beyond your knowledge were happening, and it left Genji in one place for no more than a few hours. Though he didn’t need as much sleep as a regular human being, he still needed his rest, and you were worried because of it.

Genji tried to keep you in the loop as much as possible, but he never revealed details of what he was doing. You knew he was set to come back tonight and there wasn’t news of a new job posted yet, meaning he would be home for a couple days if he was lucky.

That was when you got an idea. Genji was always saying he couldn’t resist you, why not use that to your advantage? You had bought something nice to wear, not too revealing, but not conservative either. It was the perfect blend, and you knew Genji wouldn’t be able to take his eyes off you.

With a little help from an old cookbook, you had a delicious meal waiting for Genji. You liked to think you were a good cook. No matter if you were or weren’t, Genji would always eat every last bite like it was the best thing he’d ever eaten. You’d made a small array for him to choose from, so even if your plan didn’t work, he would be well fed, and that was enough for you. You’d begun to worry about his diet over time with how often he was off on missions, some of which you just knew didn’t allot enough time to maintain a healthy balance.

Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of Genji’s footsteps heading toward the kitchen and the dinner you had set out.

“My love…what is this?” Genji seemed stumped, and appeared anxious as if he may have missed an important anniversary. He walked to the table, setting his mask on it. He never needed it around you.

“Well…I thought you might like a little surprise. You’ve been so busy lately, we haven’t had any time to spend together.” You respected that he had an important job, but he needed to focus on himself more. He was going to overwork himself no matter what, but maybe you could provide enough of a distraction to ease him into better taking care of himself.

“A surprise indeed…I’m afraid for once I’m at a loss for words. For you to do all this for me…what did I do to deserve you?” He walked around the table, letting his fingers trace over the small of your back as he leaned down to press a quick kiss to your cheek.

Using the words he first asked you out with against him, you turned around and wrapped your arms around his neck to pull him closer, “Won’t you do me the pleasure of joining me for dinner tonight?”

You knew recalling some of your best nights with Genji was his weakness. Reminding him how long you’d been together and things he had done right in the past …that was how you got to him. He didn’t often like talking about the future, but reminisced over the past quite frequently. In order to accommodate that, you reminded him of all of your favorite moments of the past, and it kept him going.

“Joining you tonight would be my honor.” He held out his arm, leading you to your seat. Like the gentleman he was, he pulled out the chair for you before returning to his own seat.

The moment didn’t last long and you heard a familiar noise coming from Genji’s communicator. Another mission. You just knew it.

With a sigh, Genji got back up, not a single bite of food taken.

“Are you sure you can’t stay?” You couldn’t hide the disappointment in your voice. Spending all night preparing for this moment, only for it to be shattered by another call. You wouldn’t dare get in his way of helping save the world…but what if he burnt out on a mission because he was unable to properly take care of himself on breaks?

“We know I can’t ignore this…” There was regret in his voice. It was clear he didn’t want to leave either. But as long as the world was in danger, he had no choice.

Answering his com, your suspicions were confirmed. Another mission.

Standing up and coming to his side as he prepared to leave again, you hugged him from behind. “Just one more minute?” A small request, and when he heard the sadness in your voice he just couldn’t refuse.

Genji turned around, pulling you close to him. Genji always gave the best hugs. One hand rubbed your back, while the other ran through your hair. You relaxed because of his soothing touches. For a moment it even made you forget that he was leaving soon.

You whined when he pulled away, and he gave you a reassuring smile, though you couldn’t see it due to his mask as he placed it back on his face. “I’ll be back before you know it.” He turned to walk away but you pulled him back.

Just one last kiss…that would be okay right? You slowly lifted his mask, a privilege you received for your six month anniversary. It took a while before he was comfortable letting you remove his mask to see his face, scars and all, but he overcame that fear with you.

Genji’s eyes darkened, and he spoke in a low voice that went straight through you, “You know I won’t be satisfied with only one kiss. Do not. Tempt. Me. Or you and I both know I will miss my mission.” He leaned down, kissing your cheek. “I promise to make it up to you when I’m back…for as long as you want.”

As he left, you knew he would keep his promise. Something in his eyes always made you believe him…and if you knew anything about Genji, you knew he was a man of his word.
