Work Text:
It had been a few months of living with your girlfriend, Sombra. She was often away on missions, so having her home so close to a holiday was more than you could ask for.
Normally…outsiders can’t stay on base. But after she pulled some strings, she got her commander to agree to let you stay there with her as long as you signed a waiver stating that you wouldn’t expose the base or any of it’s secrets to the outside world.
So here you were, decorating the small tree you got that would fit into your room. Sombra was going to be back from her latest mission soon so you could celebrate your holiday together, since she could be deployed before the holiday itself. So celebrating early was the best you could do.
She had sent you a message about an hour ago, saying she’d be back soon. You had spent this time decorating as much as you could. Mistletoe on the main entryway, a little tree with ornaments and tinsel, and you even baked some Christmas treats the day before.
Your little tree was perfect…but it was missing something. You just couldn’t place your finger on it…oh well. Hopefully it would be enough for Sombra. She had always said, anything you do for her is more than enough. But you wanted to make her really happy, so the least you could do is put some thought into it.
You heard the main door open, and Sombra’s footsteps walking in. Turning from your tree, you saw your girlfriend with…something behind her back? Did she get you a gift too?
“It looks beautiful here, you really didn’t have to decorate this much.” She said as she walked over to you.
“I know…but I wanted to surprise you when you got back! This is our first Christmas together, I wanted to decorate. But I saved some of it for when you got here.” You pulled her into a hug, and pointed up to show the mistletoe hanging over the entryway. She moved…whatever was behind her back to the table next to the entrance, but you didn’t have time to look to see what it was.
She looked up and laughed, “Mistletoe? Classic.” She grinned and pulled you into a kiss.
Kissing her was one of the greatest joys in your relationship. She was a really…really good kisser. Every kiss felt special, and you found that she enjoyed it as much as you did, if not more, making makeout sessions a frequent occurrence.
Pulling away, you were curious so you looked over to the table. It was a bland box. Nothing on the outside, just a regular round box.
“What’s that?” You pointed and she looked.
“Something you need.” Her smirk made you pout.
“That’s not very specific…” You picked up the box, gently shaking it as if that would give you an idea as to what it was. “Can I open it now?”
“Hm…I suppose.” She pretended to debate if she would let you or not, but gave a giggle when you immediately reached for the box upon her confirmation.
You eagerly tore the tape away from the box, opening it as fast as possible. Surprises were never your thing, you wanted to know what it was now.
Carefully pulling out the contents, you found a star decoration! It looked like it was just big enough to fit your tree!
“How did you…”
“Know what you need?” She pointed to a camera high up on the wall. “I like to check up on you when I’m on missions. Makes me miss you more, but gives me something to look forward to when I’m back.”
Red crawled it’s way on your face. She was watching you decorate? You were definitely going to have to find a better place to buy and wrap your presents…she probably already knew what you got her. If she DIDN’T hack into your Amazon account to see what you got her, you would really be surprised.
“Sombra! That’s not fair! I don’t get to see you at all when you’re gone but you get to look at me? Not fair at all!” You huffed and crossed your arms as if you were mad, when really you were just flustered.
“Since when have I played fair?” She patted your head and walked into the kitchen. “Wanna eat those cookies you made yesterday?”
You followed after her, and pulled the cookies out of the oven. You had placed them there on low heat to keep them ready for when she got home.
“Sure! We still have to put the frosting on them. I made a few different shapes so we could choose our favorites!” You pulled the frosting out of the fridge and set out some paper towels to place the cookies on while you decorated them.
The shapes were trees, reindeer, and stars. You both picked a couple and got to decorating. It didn’t take long, it would have gone faster if you didn’t care what they looked like, but you wanted them to look good!
“Damn cookies…” Sombra swore under her breath. Looking over to her, she was really close to the cookie, with a determined look on her face. “This is gonna look good or I’m breaking it.”
You took the minute to observe her, something you found joy in doing. Likewise, sometimes you’ll be doing something small, like watching a tv show, and when you look back to her she’s watching you, not the movie.
“You’ll get it! I can always bake more cookies if you break those!”
She looked back over to you, “I think I need a cookie icing break.” She groaned, looking at her icing job. It wasn’t…terrible. She put effort into it and that’s what counts.
“What do you want to do in the meantime?” You asked, setting down your icing as well.
“Let’s set up the tree!” She seemed excited about it, and it warmed your heart.
You both walked into the living room, and Sombra grabbed the star from the table. Plugging in the lights, the tree lit up with life.
“Together?” She suggested, and you nodded.
The two of you placed your hands on the star, and reached up to set it atop the tree. It was now a complete tree. It didn’t have many ornaments on it yet, as you were planning to make more ornaments together while she was home.
“Now that is a tree.” Sombra stepped back, taking in the view of the tree.
“Here’s to a wonderful Christmas, and many more to come.” You kissed her cheek, and held her hand.
“To many more.”
