Work Text:
“I’ve never really had to learn how to dance, you know.”
An amused expression faced his embarrassed one as they stood by each other in the empty ballroom. “You’re a dork,” she replies. “I didn’t really expect you to know how. That’s why we’re practicing.”
Before he could think of a retort to her teasing, music starts to echo across the area which prompts her to turn towards him, stretching out her hand. “Take my hand.”
And he does, not without intaking a shaky breath first.
“Pull me close,” She guides him on what to do, and he’s in awe as to how she knows so much but doesn’t boast about it like a certain someone else they both know. “And take one step.”
As he follows her instructions which she sings to him as if she’s sang it more than once, his eyes remain glued down the floor, afraid he might step on her toes. She had decided to wear doll shoes, making her all the more prone to his stepping. In his distraction, he flinches when he feels her small finger lift his chin to gaze up at her face. “Keep your eyes locked to mine.”
He nods quickly, before being taken aback again by her spinning the both of them around the dance floor. “And let the music be your guide.”

“Won’t you promise me,” Deuce starts, twirling Yuu around as gracefully as he could. They’ve been at this for a week, practicing every afternoon after classes. He’s got to admit he’s taken a liking to dancing. That, or his partner was truly great at getting him to flow into rhythm.
“That you’ll never forget?” He frowns playfully at her recurring mischief.
Shaking his head, he corrects her anyway. “We’ll keep dancing wherever we go next?”
And something changes in the way Yuu looks at him. She stills, causing him to stop dancing as well. It takes a while for her face to shift on a warmer note, but she doesn’t answer him and instead smiles as he gazes at her, pressing for an answer.
Even after their practice she refuses to answer, but judging how he had returned to being the easily distracted Deuce she met in their first year, she thinks he knows she doesn’t need to.
--
The ballroom they had once practiced in weeks prior was now a ship filled with individuals Deuce had never met in his life. It seemed like with this many people on board, Yuu was right in easing his worries of being the center of attraction. Even so, it appeared to him that his girlfriend just truly wanted to share the joy of dancing with him, so that he’d also enjoy lavish events like this.
One thing that he never expected when he had learned of getting in Night Raven College was that he’d get to dance with a maiden who would the feel the same way for him as he did them. And yet, looking into his partner’s eyes, he had learned the most cliché of lines were very much true. To him, no mountain’s too high enough, nor is any ocean too wide.
Being by Yuu’s side, he was certain this dance was worth a lifetime, which will never stop whether they were together or not.
Even as the panicked announcements of the headmaster about the rain starting to pour heavily on them, he felt like the music hadn’t stopped, and he continued to hold on to his girlfriend as if his life depended on it. If anything, both their mood brightened by an exponent higher when they were showered by the skies, happily clinging onto each other in the midst of all the noise.
“You know I believe,” He holds her face up to have her meet his eyes “That we were meant to be!”
A small shriek leaves Yuu’s lips as in a moment of surprise, Deuce lifts her up and twirls her around. As she’s lowered again onto his level, students begin rushing back to the dance floor again with them in excitement, some even kicking the puddles of water onto their friends. Yuu and Deuce laugh at the sight of their fiery cat friend looking like a drenched towel before returning their attention to each other.
“It’s like catching lightning the chances of finding someone like you.”
“It’s one in a million, the chances of feeling the way we do.”
“And with every step together,” They held each others hands, waltzing through the crowds and laughing all the way. “We just keep on getting better.” As the music that had resumed once the people got back finally got to an ending note, Yuu holds her hand out again for Deuce, a lovely smile resting on her face causing him to grin back, forgetting about the world around them once more.
“So can I have this dance?”
He laughs, taking her hand as they both sing, “Can I have this dance?”
