Romano x Reader - The Tomato Garden

Summary:

New to Italy, you come across some interesting brothers in the market. Your bond with the brothers grow, especially the eldest, when you find him tending the tomato garden. You relish in making his face turn the same shade as his favourite food.

Notes:

One swear word. I also used Google translate for the Italian as I don't speak any (the translations are in brackets).

Work Text:

They were the most adorable brothers you had ever laid eyes on; they looked like twins. They both had golden coloured eyes and brown hair, although the one boy’s hair was slightly darker than the other. You were walking down the streets of Italy when you came upon them; they were walking around town too. You were carrying a bag of groceries while staring at the handsome men when you tripped and stumbled slightly. One tomato fell and rolled away before settling a few feet away from the brothers. You straightened, cursing yourself under your breath, and walked up to the tomato; but before you got there, the brother with the darker hair picked up the tomato.

“Grazie.” you said to him as you approached.

“Veeeehh! Una bella ragazza.” (Veeeehh! A pretty girl!) the one with lighter hair said to his brother. You caught the just of the sentence and the brother with darker hair blushed slightly, but nothing in comparison to your red face.

You pushed your hair behind your ear. “Grazie.” you repeated shyly.

“Dovremmo invitarla a mangiare con noi, si?” (We should invite her to eat with us, yes?) he continued to his brother.

“Non si può flirtare con ogni bella si vede e si aspetta che andare con esso!” (You can’t flirt with every beautiful girl you see and expect them to go along with it!) the darker haired boy yelled at his brother, punching him on the shoulder.

You just stare at them curiously, your head cocked to the side slightly; you’d gotten lost in the different language which you are not fluent in. “Uhm...can I please have my tomato back?” you asked, holding out your hand to receive it.

Both brothers looked at you then the one with darker hair put the tomato into your open palm. “Grazie!” you said cheerfully, smiling brightly. The brother’s both looked at you with slight blushes on her cheeks, the darker haired boy looking away from your smiling face. You then took it upon yourself to introduce yourself.

“I’m Feliciano! And this is my big brother Lovino!” the boy with the lighter hair said.

“You speak English?” you ask, looking at the brother’s.

“Si!” Feliciano said with a wide smile; you smiled in return.

“Oh.” you said, facing Lovino. “Thanks for my tomato.”

He just nodded to you, avoiding eye contact. “Uhm...is your brother okay?” you asked Feliciano, thinking possibly that Lovino didn’t speak any English.

“I’m fine, thank you very much.” Lovino said. You were surprised by his tone but were glad to hear him speak; both their accents were amazing.

“Well, it was nice to meet you Feliciano, Lovino.” you said with a smile, putting the tomato back in your bag. You turned with a flirtatious look in your sparkling eyes, directed at Lovino. He blushed immensely and you walked off.

***

A few days later, you were walking down the streets of Italy once again, admiring the lovely scenery and beautiful sunshine. You were soaking up the sunrays when you walked by a large house with a beautiful garden. You peered over the chest-high, wood fence as you passed by and stopped. There was one of the brothers you had met earlier that week. You smiled and walked up to the fence calling: “Lovino! Hey!” You smiled brightly when he turned his head.

“Ciao bella.” he greeted sheepishly, staring at the basket of tomatoes in his arms.

“Ciao Lovino.” you greeted in return. “Come stai?” (How are you?)

He looked up at you and said “Bene.” (Good.)

“Where’s your brother?” you asked, noticing that it was only Lovino in the garden.

He grimaced but answered anyway. “That damn potato eater came and took him.” he growled.

You stared at him, wondering at his harsh attitude towards the ‘potato eater’. “May I come in?” you ask innocently, worry in your eyes.

“I’ll meet you at the door.” Lovino said, almost grumpily, as he went inside.

You forced a small smile before walking around the side of the house and to the front door. Lovino was waiting there for you, leaning against the doorframe, when you walked around front. You stopped in front of him and looked up to his eyes but he was looking away. “Are you alright?” you asked.

“Fine.” he grumbled. He stole a glance down at you before turning to go into the house. You followed after him, shutting the door behind you, before hurrying to the garden behind the frustrated Italian. He started to go through the tomato plants again, picking only the perfectly ripe tomatoes, so you decided to help and strike up a conversation.

You went to the other side of the plant he was looking at and surveyed the tomatoes. “Who’s the ‘potato-eater’ that stole your brother?” you asked quietly, still looking at the tomatoes. You noticed that he had stopped looking over the tomatoes; you looked up at him.

He blushed and straightened, looking away from you. “A fat-headed German who thinks he can do whatever he wants and corrupt Feliciano. Well I’ll show him! One day! One day I’ll be strong enough to save my brother from that f**king potato-loving bastard!”

You stared for a second at the angry Italian before giggling. He looked at you curiously but frustrated. “I’m sorry, but is he really that bad if Feliciano likes hanging out with him?” you asked whilst smiling.

“Of course he is!” Lovino yelled. “He’s twisted my brother’s head around so now he’s even dumber than he used to be!”

You giggled again: he just looked so cute when he was frustrated. “Well,” You picked a ripe tomato off the plant and tossed it to him. He fumbled a bit before catching it. “Let’s go spy on him!” you yelled enthusiastically, an evil smirk on your face. Lovino just looked at you before his cheeks went slightly red and he looked away. “Come on!” you yelled once again, walking around the tomato plant and grabbing his arm. You pulled him towards the door but just as you got into the house you saw Feliciano coming towards the back door.

He smiled brightly and spread his arms open wide. “Veehh!! Bella! What are you doing here?” He trot up to you and Lovino, who’s arm you were still holding.

“Oh. I was passing by and saw Lovino in the garden. I thought I’d help him out.” you somewhat lied, smiling at Feliciano.

“Veeehhhh! I should introduce you to my friend! He’s from Germany!” Feliciano said excited, picking up your hand and shaking it excitedly.

“Uhh...okay.” you agreed silently. You slowly let go of Lovino’s arm but Lovino grabbed your waist and stole your hand out of his brothers.

“No way in hell would I let her meet that German bastard!” he yelled. “I won’t let him steal someone else from me!!”

Your face went as red as the tomatoes you had been picking and you looked up at Lovino. His face was just as red, if not redder, having realized what he had just said. You looked at Feliciano, whose face had saddened. Then you clamped your arms around Lovino’s waist, startling him. “I want to stay here in the garden with Lovino!” you told them, smiling brightly.

After a second of silence, Feliciano’s face lit up. “Veeeehh! Lovi’s got a girlfriend!!” he cheered happily.

Lovino cracked and broke away from you. “Do not!” he yelled, chasing his brother around the room. You laughed as the two brothers ran around and as Feliciano teased Lovino, Lovino yelling insults right back. Feliciano then ran behind you and Lovino came up in front of you after his brother. Your eyes twinkled as you looked up at him. He glanced from you to his brother before his golden eyes locked on yours. You laughed and smiled brightly, causing him to blush.

You hadn’t really noticed but Feliciano had slipped out of the room. “Come on.” you said, taking his hand. “Let’s go back out into the garden.” You gently tugged on his arm before picking up speed and running into the garden, dragging Lovino with you. You let his hand go and went back over to the tomato plant, Lovino watching your every move. You picked a tomato and brought it over to him. “How’s this one look?” you asked, holding it up for him to see.

He nodded and you smiled brightly. You set it in the basket then went back over to the plant; this time Lovino followed you. You were diligently looking at the tomatoes, so much that you didn’t notice Lovino staring at you, his cheeks slowly growing redder. When you leaned around the one side of the bush, he did as well. He quickly pressed his lips to yours for only a second; you didn’t even have time to close your eyes. You just stared at him, your face hot. “Eh...uhm...will you...be my girlfriend?” he asked shyly.

You stared for a second before smiling brightly and clamping onto him once again. “I’d love to!” you screeched in his ear. He wrapped his arms around you and held you close. Then you pushed back just enough so that you could kiss him.

His eyes widened for a second then he melted into the kiss. When you pulled away for air, you giggled. “You’re face looks like a tomato.” you said without thinking.

“Eh?! What’s that supposed to mean?!” he questioned angrily.

“N-no! I just mean, you’re face is as red as a tomato!” you tried to correct yourself, your face turning a similar shade. He continued to frown at you but wouldn’t let you go. You then started to laugh and wrapped your arms around him tighter. You giggled, “I think it’s cute.” His golden eyes softened and he held you tighter, enjoying every second of the embrace.
