Work Text:
After Matthew and Marilla went back to Avonlea Anne went to Diana to show her the drawing at the end of the book, the one made by her father that portrayed her mother, and now she was watching her friend observe the image, tracing the image with her fingertips.
Unable to wait any longer to see what Diana would say about the image, Anne asked:
“She was beautiful, right? Even with the red hair.”
“Yes, she was. Very. Like you are."
"Diana, I didn't show you this for you to comfort me. It is awfully kind of you, but that's not why I showed you. I just wanted to share my discovery with you, I've never seen my mother before today."
“I know. But I'm not trying to comfort you, or telling you a polite lie. I've always thought you were beautiful and I'm sure Gilbert shares my opinion." Diana said and smiled.
But there was something about her smile that seemed a little sad for a second.
“Even with my red hair?”
“I never understood your insecurity, it's so beautiful. So different, I’m the one who should be insecure with my boring brown hair.”
"It's not boring, nothing about you is boring." Anne said and kissed her cheek, making Diana's cheeks turn a lovely shade of pink.
"I'm so glad you decided to stay here with me."
"Me too." Diana said and smiled.
And this time there was no sadness in her smile. .
