Chapter 1: International dinosaur day

Chapter Text

June 1st 2019, 7:30am.

Sendai, Japan.

“Good morning everyone!”

Your loud voice filled up the employees break area. A few of your co-workers glared at you, the others simply ignored you. You greeted a few of your other co-workers before sitting down next to a tall blonde man known as Tsukishima Kei. His blonde hair was still slightly messy from waking up early. He was wearing headphones that blasted music loud enough for people to hear if they decided to sit next to you. His brown eyes were fixated on a document he was reading about the new Pachycephalosaurus skeleton that came in yesterday.

You grinned at him before tapping his arm. “Mornin’ Tsukishima.” He turned his head and sighed when he saw you. He swiftly turned off his headphones and took them off.

“Goodmorning (L/n).”

He glanced at your pants, on the blue denim were painted cartoonish-dinosaurs in various different colors. Your supervisors weren’t that strict with the work uniforms, as long as you wore a white blouse with blue/black pants or skirts and black shoes, it was fine. You were a very artistic person and liked to express that through your clothes, that included painting on your pants.

“Are those new?” He asked in a monotonous voice, trying to hide his genuine interest, something you could easily see through.

The first time you had worn a pair of your painted pants you had gotten in trouble with your supervisor, after explaining the situation and promising to not wear pants with any inappropriate images, you were free to wear any of your original pants. “Yup, I painted them last week. I made them for today.” You answered with a cheeky smile.

“I don’t see a Pachycephalosaurus on your pants, what is so special about today?” He asked, taking a sip of his coffee. Your smile only grew wider. “It’s June 1st, that means it’s international dinosaur day.” A sinister grin formed on his face.

“I’m sure you’ll be repeating that fact to more victims today.”

“You mean visitors?”

“It’s the same thing when you’re their tour guide.”

You playfully smacked his arm and rolled your eyes. “I’m sure they prefer me over a grumpy volleyball player that can’t tape his fingers correctly.”

Tsukishima’s gaze shifted to his left hand where his middle finger and ring finger were taped together. The tape was slightly loose and didn’t stick to his finger well. He sighed and reached in his bag. He pulled out a roll of tape and handed it to you without saying anything. It had become a routine, a few days before his games he’d tape his fingers (horribly) and you would fix it for him. You quietly went to work after removing the old tape from his fingers.

Tsukishima would never admit this to anyone but moments like this were his favorite part of the day. Not only were you quiet, the way your smaller hands would softly graze his fingers while applying the tape. Not to mention the fact that a small part of your tongue poked out from in between your lips, something you did when you were concentrating on something. Tsukishima found it cute, he might be a huge know-it-all and an asshole, but he was still a human that experienced romantic attraction (much to his dismay).

After a few minutes you let go of his hands and handed back his tape. “Thanks.” He muttered. You opened your mouth but he shut you up instantly. “No you cannot draw on it.”

You let out an exaggerated whine and slouch in your chair. “Not even on international dinosaur day? The kids on the tour will love it.” You mumbled in defeat. You turned to him with a pout on your face.

“Your petty attempts to make me feel bad aren’t working, besides, it’s friday, dumbass, there’s barely gonna be any kids.”

Your pout turned into a lazy grin. “Didn’t you see the schedule change Tsukki? We’re working together today, there’s an elementary school visit today, a class of 2nd year elementary school students. We’re the lucky people to guide them.”

Tsukishima rested his head on his arms and groaned. “You’re joking right? It’s national dinosaurus day, not April fools. Please tell me you’re joking.” You patted his back. “At least you’ll get to spend the entire day with me.”

“That’s even worse.”

------------

June 1st 2019, 9:30am.

Sendai, Japan.

Screams of children filled the entrance hall. A horde of 20 kids were screaming and laughing while their teacher tried to calm them down. Tsukishima’s face was pale when he saw one of the teachers and tried his best to hide from his gaze the entire time.

A small girl tugged at your arm. Her brown eyes looked up at you and she shyly looked away. “I really like your dinosaur pants miss.” She spoke softly.

You wanted to cry of happiness.

“Awh thank you! I really like the dinosaur pins on your bag.” You exclaimed, pointing at the pins. She muttered a small ‘thank you’ while averting her gaze.

“Who’s your homeroom teacher?” You asked. The small girl pointed at the silvered haired male lecturing a group of boys. He had a birthmark under his left eye and a strict look on his face. The same teacher’s gaze Tsukishima had been avoiding like death itself. You thanked the girl and walked towards the silver haired teacher. He had just finished lecturing his students and turned around to face you. “Hi, you must be one of the tour guides for today. My name is Sugawara Kōshi. Please excuse my students, they are very excited about visiting the museum.” You bowed and introduced yourself. “I’m (L/n) (Y/n), don’t worry about them, as long as they don’t cause a ruckus during the tour, it should be okay. The other tour guide is standing over there, his name is Tsukishima Kei.”

Sugawara’s eyes sparkled when you mentioned Tsukishima’s name. You signaled Tsukishima to come over and he awkwardly walked to you. “Tsukishima! It’s been so long!” Sugawara exclaimed. “Hello Sugawara, it’s good to see you again.” Sugawara smiled and patted him on the back. “We should have a Karasuno reunion soon.”

“You two know each other?” You asked Tsukishima. He nodded in response. “He was the vice-captain of the volleyball team in my first year of high school.”

Tsukishima did not want to be here.

“Mr. Sugawara, Mr. Sugawara, when are we gonna start the tour?” A young boy asked. His red hair covered parts of his eyes and he was bouncing up and down.

“Soon Tadashi, let me finish talking to the tour guides and then we’ll go.” Sugawara answered. The boy nodded and then looked up at you. His eyes scanned you and then gave you a thumbs up.

“Your pants are totally rad Miss.”

You wanted to cry of happiness, again.

“Tadashi, manners!” Sugawara hissed at the young kid. You shifted your gaze to Tsukishima, your gaze met his. “Regretting my offer of letting me draw on your tape, Tsukki ?” You teased.

“Your inflated ego makes your head look even bigger.” He teased back.
