Chapter 1: Prolog

Chapter Text

Martín Berrote ran down the long corridors of the old monastery, cursing softly.

There was a good reason he didn't like children.

Aside from the Fact,  that most of them were horrifically messy, loud and annoying, you couldn't turn your back on them for five seconds , without them getting into some mischief.

Kids were like damn goats. And there were already many of them on the grassy areas of the old Monastery. The monks took thank God.... care of the Animals.

Basically both Animals and Children were exhausting and the Engineer was so glad,  not to own one or the other of those two Things in his life.

Well, that wasn't entirely correct - the goats and baby goats sometimes ran into the part of the monastery,  that wasn't owned by the monks and once those damned animals had left their excrement in the middle of the living room carpet - which was disgusting enough in itself.

"Andrés? It´s enough! This Beast has stolen my Toothbrush again! This is the third time this Week!" - angry, Martín arrived at the small Chapel, that had taken such a liking to his best friend. It was Berlins personal favorit Place in the Monastery.  The anger that took over his entire body,  wasn't due to one of the annoying goats....this time...no it was because of the ´Beast´.

Or the Fact,  that one night with long conversations....with Andrés ,m two weeks ago, his best Friend had the thought ,  to drag along an uninvited overnight gues - t during a raid on a small watch shop near Rome, no, it was because of this Beast herself...bit Berlins dumb Ideas.

Andrés meant it would just be a phase and this Beast would worry about his dental health.

A contemptuous snort escaped Martín at this Answer. His best friend didn't even take him seriously.

Of course not, because Andrés could hardly complain,  that his Toothbrushes were stolen  at least three times a week.

The small household certainly didn't lack enough supplies of Toothbrushes - but it still pissed Martín off , that Andrés didn't take his complaints seriously.

"And of course I get upset about it! This Beast just keeps stealing my damn Toothbrushes! Where is she anyway?! She's probably hiding under your bed again, isn't she? Does she think I'm afraid to lay down on the floor ...to start yelling at her again?!" Martín continued angrily.

"Maybe she'd stop that,  if you didn't yell at her? Now don't make such a Fuss about some Toothbrushes. Sergio sent you a letter. You were too busy complaining,  about the 'beast.'  so - I took the liberty of opening it and reading it", Andrés placed a folded letter on the massive old table in the Chapel and then turned to face his best friend for the first time...at this Day.

"...you should get used to having several people with their toothbrushes around here soon. It's best to put your differences aside. There will soon be a lot more life in our part of the Monastery",  Andrés commented amusedly , while Martin had rushed to the table and read the Letter.

"Tell me it's a damn joke! Why the hell  - does your brother want to come to Italy,  with the entire Gang in three days - to hold a meeting?! And why did I agree on that bullshit Idea?! When?!", Martin slammed the letter on the floor like a stubborn child, demanding answers from his best Friend.

The news that the Professor was going to travel to Italy,  with the rest of the gang members , to hold some classes/Meetings at the Monastery came as a Surprise. That Martin should have agreed with - unbelievable.

Andrés could only have had a hand in this. And of course nobody suspected him,  because Andrés de Fonollosa died 3 fucking years ago.

The reality, however, had been different.

No one but Martin knew , what really happened and it would certainly shock Sergio,  to see his dead brother again. Which didn't mean,  that Martin wanted to have all these chaotic people here.

"Oh that was the Night you chased 'the Beast' out of the living room,  because it stole your Dessert. One of the monks brought the letter to me, I replied and now we'll have to go shopping soon. I thought we'd fill up the pantry tomorrow and go on a trip to the city",  Andrés smiled and Martin looked at him still speachless.

"We don't even know , why your brother and the rest of the Gang,  are showing up here and what these lessons are for? And you say.... yes okay, come and join me at the Monastery?! How about you asking me first?! I don't want to share our home with Tokyo or Denver!", Martin pouted accusingly.

"You're jealous dear Martín. Not on our future Guests - but on our family growth",  - Andrés cut him off. For a moment the engineer was speechless....again.

"Ridiculous! You can hardly call this Beast an addition to the Family! Just because you found it in a Cage during the Robbery and saved it  - doesn't mean I'm jealous!", Martín hissed at his best friend.

Ridiculous. He wasn't jealous of a little stupid annoying kid.

"You're jealous. And of a child  - who isn't even able to change clothes on his own. I think you'll get along wonderfully with the other guests in our part of the Monastery",  Andrés commented in a cold voice.

He had seen the little hints. Ever since the girl was freed from that cage in the basement of the watch shop, hardly a day had passed by, that the Engineer didn't look at her , as if she were a filthy thief.

He had no rational reason to be jealous of a small Child.

"I'm not jealous of a former experiment,  that was kept in a goddamn cage and......"

However, Martín didn't get any further, because quiet childish steps stopped at the Entrance to the Chapel. Martín's eyes darkened, when he saw 'the beast' standing there.

A little girl with shoulder-length blond hair, big green eyes and a small body. In her hands the girl held a small box with what looked like Earth.

"Yours....Coralie give back.....", the Girl spoke quietly and put the small box of dirt on the ground before she took a few steps closer to Martín and once again pointed to the small box.

Looking closer, Martín realized it wasn't just Dirt. There was a whole collection of Toothbrushes there - his Toothbrushes among the dirt in the Box.

In a Jerk reaction, Martín childishly kicked the box and the contents spilled on the floor.

A frightened whimper came from the little girl named Coralie, who hid behind André's legs for Protection.

"At least you can no longer claim , that Coralie won't bring your Toothbrushes back. Clean up this mess - and then we'll discuss which rooms of the Monastery , we have to get ready for our Guests" - Andrés turned his back on his best friend and sat Coralie with a slow move on one of the Chairs and then picked up the Letter Martin had thrown on the Ground.

Oh how interesting it would be  - to finally see his little brother again.
