Work Text:

The room was empty, Sue crept inside, the staff had finished cleaning up after all the guests a few hours before. She had instructed the staff to leave the candles lit. The moonlight shined in, it was calm and quiet. Sue was wearing her wedding dress, it was long and flowing. She smiled and then left the room. She crept upstairs and knocked and Emily’s bedroom door. She could hear Emily shuffling around, then the door slid open, there stood Emily, her long dark hair flowing down her back, her nightgown hung just below her knees. Emily gasped at the sight of Sue in her wedding dress. The two women stood in the doorway, Sue extended her hand towards Emily. Emily hesitated before taking it. The two women slipped into the darkness of hallway. Sue led Emily down stairs and into the ballroom. The room was cast in a warm golden glow. Emily gasped, she let go of Sue’s hand and spun around in circles admiring the room. Sue watched her with a smile on her face, she felt joy blooming in her chest. Emily stopped spinning and elegantly crossed the ballroom. She curtsied and then took Sue’s hand in hers. Sue twirled and then they took the floor. They paused, gazing into each other’s eyes. Emily then began to hum, Sue giggled but went with it. They slow danced in the moonlight. After a couple minutes they stopped. Sue was extremely nervous. She ran over to a little table along the wall. On top was a little box. Sue gathered the box and then approached Emily. Emily was extremely confused she didn’t have a clue what was going on. Then sue got down on one knee,
“ Emily Dickinson, will you make me the happiest person in the world and be my wife ??” Sue asked. Emily gasped, she shuffled forwards and admired the ring. It was nothing special it just simply had their birth stones in it.
“ yes I’ll marry you” Emily whispered, her eyes brimming with tears. Sue laughed and they embraced. Emily slipped the ring on. It fit perfectly. Emily and Sue locked eyes. Sue began to cry,
“ I’m so sorry Emily, I’m sorry we can’t be ourselves.” Sue gushed
“ oh darling, there is nothing you can do to change the world” Emily comforted her
“ I love you Em” sue whispered, her face wet with tears, Emily couldn’t help cry herself. They laughed as tears streamed down their faces.
“ I love you to Sue,” Emily whispered before placing gentle kisses all over Sue’s face. They giggled. They held each other close as they sunk to the floor. Emily stared up at the ceiling as Sue nuzzled up to her neck. Sue fell asleep in Emily’s arms.
Sue woke up in the middle of the night, she grumbled to herself, she felt Emily move, she looked up at her. Emily was awake, her eyes glued to the ceiling.
“ Em??” Sue whispered
“ you should go to bed, today is your wedding day after all.” Emily replied, her voice cracked.
“ what are you talking about I am already married. I have the most beautiful wife. She has long dark hair and beautiful brown eyes. She makes me the happiest person in the whole world.” Sue whispered, she traced shapes onto Emily’s chest. She felt Emily take a deep breath before she kissed the top of Sue’s head.
“ I love you to the moon and back” Emily whispered. She then sat up forcing Sue to as well. Emily took Sue’s face in her hands,
“ I’ll always love you Sue, never forget that, and no matter how hard this world can try I’ll always love you” Sue nodded, she knew that Emily was telling the truth. This world didn’t accept people like them. This world would try everything to destroy them. But they were strong, they had each other. They would never stop loving each other.

Sue married Emily’s brother later that same day, Sue went on to have his children. But the two women never stopped loving each other. Emily died May 15 1886. Sue lived the remainder of her life mourning until she died May 12 1913. The two women were buried beside each other. Their love will never be forgotten.
