Beary sighed a bit louder than he intended to as he laid back on a squishy pillow that just so happened to be Wolf's belly. The two had decided to take a break in a field they'd found during their hike and Wolf immediately conked out once his head hit the lush grass.
Beary looked up at the sky and reveled at how blue it was. Were it not for the fluffy clouds and jet streams from planes long gone, the expansive atmosphere would be giving him a run for his money. A few dandelion seeds flew past his muzzle and scattered to the winds.
A soft snore passed Wolf's lips as he slept soundly. Beary chuckled and ran a paw down one of his cheeks, avoiding his cybernetic eye patch. He wanted nothing more than to exist in this moment forever. The man that lay under him was perfection incarnate from his face down to his feet.
He'd never imagined that a rough and tumble space mercenary would ever fall for him: especially one as renowned as Wolf O'Donnell. One day the man was shooting his adversaries out of the stars, the next he was sleeping out in a grassy field wearing a purple tank top and magenta short shorts with his bear boyfriend. He couldn’t help but chuckle at the stark contrast of what Wolf’s life was now.
Beary loved a lot of things about Wolf: the way he'd ask him if it was ok to do almost everything when it came to being intimate, the way he always opened the door for him no matter where they'd go, the way he could flip on a dime and punch someone out for being rude to him (even if Beary would prefer he talked it out before resorting to violence.) But probably most of all, Beary loved his stomach. It was something Wolf wasn’t used to seeing as he use to work out a lot more, but his new more sedentary lifestyle was not kind to his waistline. Although at first, this made Wolf a bit sad, seeing how Beary loved him in fitness and in ‘not so much’ helped him come to terms with his new asset. If anything, it only drew Beary closer to him.
As he let the thoughts run through his mind, Beary chuckled as his head went up and down slowly. The ‘big bad Wolf’ sure was a blowhard.
It still shocked him sometimes that he could lay here with someone he idolized and say they were an item. It had only been a year since Wolf and he had made it official.
“So the green one right?” Wolf asked as he moved two shirts from in front of his, at the time, muscular chest.
“The purple one works too,” Beary replied from his seat on Wolf’s bed.
“I asked you because I can’t decide.”
“Well, I narrowed the choices down.”
“Cub, be reasonable and pick one so we can get going.”
Beary rolled his eyes and stood before reaching out and grabbing the green shirt. “Wear the purple one. I’ll go hang this up.”
“You’re the best.” Wolf pecked him on the cheek.
“Aww... you’re sweet.”
Wolf looked himself over in the mirror. His black jeans had a rip right above the left knee, just how he liked it, and he slipped the purple button-up on and flattened out any stray wrinkles.
“I must say Mr. O’Donnell you clean up heckin nice,” Beary said from the doorway, eyebrows gyrating. Wolf loved and hated when he did that.
“Do you ever curse?” He asked as they left his room.
“I’ve been known to curse.” Beary chuckled. “I mean I don’t very often but I’m not against doing it.”
“Oh yeah? What’s your favorite curse word?” Wolf leaned in and scratched under Beary’s chin. Beary visibly reddened and coughed a bit louder than he thought he should’ve.
“I guess fuck.” He replied.
“I have never heard you say fuck.”
“Well, it’s my go-to when I’m upset.”
“I’ve also never seen you upset.” Wolf cupped Beary’s chin and leaned in close. “And I would hope we keep it that way for as long as I am able.”
Beary was inches from Wolf’s lips: Wolf’s magnificent, warm, inviting lips. He was such a good kisser too. He only had to move a few inches. Just an ‘accidental’ trip and he’d return to the Pearly Gates. He could feign ignorance and pay for the trickery later. Yessir… Just fall into the wonderful lupine in front of him.
“You wanna kiss me, don’t you?” Wolf huffed, his breath shooting directly onto Beary’s muzzle.
“Y-yeah... I do.” Beary nodded. “Fuck yes.”
His patience long depleted, he erased the space between them and allowed their lips to meet. Beary groaned into Wolf’s mouth as they stood in the doorway of Wolf’s apartment. Wolf’s paw moved to Beary’s and pulled him closer if that was even possible.
The two felt the world collapse around them as Wolf pushed Beary into the archway, shifting his paw into the bear’s jeans.
Beary broke the kiss and gripped Wolf’s arm. “I want to… but we do have reservations.”
“We’re in my apartment.”
“No, I mean at the restaurant.”
“Right,” Wolf slipped his paw back out. “Can’t be late.”
As Wolf went to reach for the door handle, Beary put his paw over Wolf’s. Wolf looked back and saw Beary staring into the floorboards. It felt like he couldn’t look him in the eyes. Wolf couldn’t imagine what had come over Beary at that moment.
“Something wrong?”
“Listen… I’ve been thinking,” Beary started. “We’ve been going out for a bit, but we never said what we were.”
“Well you’re my cub, right?” Wolf rubbed his head.
“But I mean… are we… together? Or are we just casual?”
“Beary.” Wolf cupped his chin. “I am very serious about you. I would be honored to call you my boyfriend.”
“Really? You’re honored?” Beary could feel his face getting wet.
Wolf swiped a tear from his cheek and smooched the stain it left behind. “Truly.”
Beary felt his heart leave his chest as Wolf held him tight and rocked him back and forth.
“Beary? Beary? Wake up, cub?”
Beary was confused as to why Wolf was trying to wake him until he noticed the area shift from his apartment to the open blue sky. He looked over and saw Wolf smiling over him, his paw rubbing the bear’s cheek.
Beary shot up and sat cross-legged in front of his lover. “How long was I out for?
“Not long, but you were out like a light. Although so was I.” He sat up slightly and licked at Beary’s cheek. “You’re very cute when you sleep.”
Beary cupped his head in his hands. “So embarrassing…”
“I think it’s cute.” Wolf moved the bear’s hands and smooched his knuckles. “Something else to love about you.”
Beary scrunched his face up and tackled Wolf back into the grass. The two snuggled up and stared off into the sky.
Overhead, a few clouds shifted to form a heart. In the peaceful field of green, the world never felt so blue.
