Chapter Text
"Alright, then I'll leave that matter in your hands," I say, and then send the student off. As far as I know, that should be the last of the visitors today. It's as I've decided to focus on my own pile of work that I hear a knock at the door. I thought there wouldn't be anyone else, which means...
"Hey, sorry to interrupt."
"So it was you."
"Yep, it's me."
I feel happier just seeing her; nothing else could fill me with such delight.
"Are you expecting anyone else today?"
"No, no one."
"I'm glad to hear that."
"Anyway, what are you up to today?"
"Why do you ask?"
"I know you. You must have some business to take care of."
"Hmm? Maybe I do, maybe I don't."
She takes a nearby chair and slides it over. I wonder what she's doing, until she sets the chair in place and seats herself right beside me. Then, folding her arms and shutting her eyes, she settles leaning on me.
"Sorry, I'm terrible at guessing. Why...?"
"I haven't been getting much sleep as of late, so I thought I'd borrow your shoulder for a bit."
"I need you to pay more attention to lights out in the dorm."
"Really wish you would say things like that with a little more reservation."
Oops, she got me. Well, of course. I don't think I could act so stiff, not when she's decided to rely on me like this.
"Although, it is a suggestion direct from the student council president. I suppose I should adjust my schedule as necessary," she says, and fixes her position to lean more of her weight on me.
Has she fallen asleep? She must have been quite tired. That being said, well... It'll be much harder for me to focus like this. I continue my work, careful not to move too much and disturb her. It's not the most comfortable position, but I don't dislike it either. Occasionally I feel her stir, and each time I become strongly aware of her presence next to me, and my heartrate increases.
I can't imagine that she's getting quality sleep in this position, and yet she went out of her way to rest here, nonetheless. ...God, how far can I fall for her until she's satisfied? Like that, an hour flew by. I begin to worry if I should wake her or not, when I feel a gust of air.
"Kaicho!! I finished the thing you wanted me to do!"
Teio had thrust open the door. I jump in surprise, and as a result, Agnes Tachyon falls from her perch on my shoulder. Her head now on my lap, I secure her with my arm so that she doesn't fall further. I'd greatly miscalculated, and hadn't imagined that anyone else would walk in. However, with this turn of events, her body is entirely hidden by my desk. I don't think Teio will be able to see her from where she is.
Why should I be so afraid? That'd be because the girl currently asleep on my lap would hate the attention and resulting fuss. If our position here were leaked to the other students, I don't know what she would do. Perhaps... No, I don't want to think about it. I don't, but I don't need to think about it to know that this situation is tricky.
"...Sorry about that. Uh, well, let's see... I wanted you to do something, yes. What was it..."
"You wanted me to gather all the financials and expenses from the clubs at school. Don't tell me you forgot?"
"Oh! That's right! You really didn't need to rush, but that was incredibly fast! Thank you!"
Although, I'm sorry to say, her timing is atrocious.
"Hmm! It sure was! That's 'cause Kaicho asked me special! Though with all the things I can do, this was easier than a piece of cake!" she says, and walks closer with all the documents in her arms.
"Wait! Hang on one moment, Teio! You can leave the papers there!" I say, pointing toward shelves near the entrance. It's very uncomfortable, and I don't doubt the girl resting on my lap feels the same. As if she knew the situation we were in, she laid there quietly, without any trouble. Here and there, her body would tremble or shift. If I look down too often, she'll begin to get suspicious. So, although I can't vouch for how genuine it appears to be, I smile to reassure her. Teio, regardless, looks very doubtful.
"Huh? Why?"
Well, of course she would ask. This might be bad. I've noticed someone in particular breaking into a grin, and peeking out to check on things. Whose fault do you think this is? Then, I feel her fingers trace the palm of my hand that's been holding her in place. "Persevere," is what she spells. I have to fight this battle alone, and she's enjoying it. I wish I could point out to her that she's somewhat responsible. Of course I can't, and she knows that. So cruel.
"Well, it's just that... The documents I have on my desk right now are very confidential, and it would be dangerous if anyone saw. I would love to take them from you right away, but I can't. I'm very sorry."
"Huh... Okay, I understand," she agrees, and I nearly sigh in relief.
"But, wait. Usually when there's stuff you can't show me, you'll just walk over to me instead, right?"
You're right, Teio. That is what I usually do; you have a great memory. Please forgive me. While I struggle to answer her, someone uses my palm as a canvas. It's making it very difficult to concentrate, and I wish she'd stop.
"Well um, you see, wh...?!" I say, about to give an excuse, when I feel something tender press against my palm. Without thinking, I glance down. With a mischievous smirk, bored of using my hand as her personal canvas, she had laid a kiss on it.
"Kaicho?"
"No, I'm sorry. Some of the documents fell to the floor, and I can't move or else I'll damage them."
"Oh, so that's why you were acting weird! But Kaicho, that's pretty careless of you."
She's apparently enjoying seeing me nervous. Meanwhile, my brain is in overdrive trying to deal with the sensation on my hand of her teasing lips. I'm aware that she's causing this conflict of reason and instinct on purpose, for her own amusement. I swear I'll get my revenge, and let her have it.
"I guess so, I did doze off earlier. I'll be more careful from now on."
Bouncing with excitement, Teio drops the papers on the shelf and leaves the room, all the while gushing over what she'd heard. Her footsteps grow fainter, until I can no longer hear them, and then the weight on my lap lifts.
"That was a huge pain," she says, quite brazenly, with what looks to me like an exhausted expression. I push her down on top of the desk.
"Hungry, aren't you?"
"It was your fault in the first place."
"I can't say that was my intention, but... Are you sure? The mountain of documents really will fall to the floor this time." She fixes her eyes on a nearby stack of papers. I don't pay attention. Instead, our lips meet. She doesn't resist me. My palm is against hers.
Here, I think to myself that if someone were to interrupt this time, I wouldn't be able to give any excuses anymore.
