A Time Lord Burial

Summary:

Does Gallifrey even deserve to rejoin the rest of the universe? Was The Doctor right to leave them stranded, where they could only destroy themselves?
Romana and Narvin are desperately trying to find a way out of the pocket universe. Braxiatel... well, Narvin knows better than to bring him up. And The Doctor—the only link they have to the rest of the universe that they are willing to use—never came calling after Trenzalore. He’s disappeared, all traces of him lost. Except for one.

Set shortly after the events of End of Time > Day of the Doctor > Time of the Doctor. I promise it’s not a brain pretzel. This is a pretzel-free zone.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

A cold air settled over The Doctor’s skin. Against his will, he squinted into the light and struggled to focus on his surroundings.

They are so far away. They are waiting. But what do they want?

He wrapped his lined coat tightly against the shudder radiating through his bones. Trying to smother the cold fire burning him from the inside.

Will you run again?

The Doctor pulled his chin up and planted his feet squarely, focusing his mind. The cold shifted away in response, hovering like a mist behind him. He turned his head as though he meant to look over his shoulder, but stopped. “How did you find me?” His voice rattled through from the thick cover of sleep.

I know you don’t want to remember me, but I’m still here. And I needed to tell you. They’re waiting for you to come help, and I don’t know what to tell them. I can’t do anything from here. It took a great deal of work just to connect to you. I can only convince them to hold off for now. But I think they’ll do something soon.

A hand on his arm. You don’t need to do anything if you don’t think it’s best. I just wanted to let you know. The time is coming.

A pause. His face twisted in a frown, tilting towards the touch.

You always said they were rotten. I’m not sure if they all are. Maybe there is only one end for Gallifrey, and all are doomed to go down with it, evil or not. Atrophy of the universe and all that. I know that’s not what you believe.

“But you came to tell me this anyways.”

In case you had a plan you were procrastinating on.

His shoulders wilted. “If only I did.”

Notes:

*author update June 23, 2022* I am working on updating this. When I went to start the next chapter I realized I didn't like the opening act at all, so I'm reworking the next part. Everything else in the plan will probably stay the same, and go smoothly once I've worked past the changes. <3

My timeline headcanon
-The War Council (in the second city, Arcadia) placing the Time Lord senate/Rassilon (in the first city, The Capitol citadel) in a time lock.

-End of Time

-Day of the Doctor: Gallifrey as a whole is placed in a pocket universe by The Doctors, completely cutting them off from the web of time.

-Time of the Doctor: The War Council tries to brute-force it’s way into the rest of the universe and creates the cracks in time.

I've had a Gallifrey fix-it jangling around in my head for over 8 years. There's quite literally 300+ years of events planned out. I was going to can it when I fell out of love with the show but after taking a long break from watching it and also remembering how much I love the audio dramas, I decided to pick it back up again.
This fic has brief mentions of relationships, both platonic and romantic. Shippy stuff will take place in additional fics within the same series, so if you don't like a ship you are free to avoid those fics.
