That Lamp Doesn’t Fit There and Other Phrases From A Sleep Talker

Summary:

Sharing a bed with Pran is one of Pat’s favourite things to do. Whether that is cuddling together, having sex or just sleeping together, being close to his boyfriend is the best experience ever.

It isn’t until a month into sharing a bed when Pat finds out that Pran talks in his sleep.

Notes:

I felt the need to write something because all the works from the gift exchange have been great to read and have inspired me to write even when I don’t have any ideas.

Some of these sleep talking phrases are directly from yours truly. Would you like to guess what ones???

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Pat loves sharing a bed with Pran. Not only is Pran’s dorm bed somehow a great deal more comfortable than Pat’s one (a conspiracy Pat is sure of it), but Pran is in it.

Pran, his boyfriend, who is soft and warm, and doesn’t complain when Pat cuddles into him like a limpet or when he finds Nong Nao tucked into the bed before he is. Pran just sighs, gently places Nong Nao on the bedside table and climbs into bed as Pat’s replacement cuddle buddy.

They don’t just cuddle either, when they share a bed. Pat is happy to say that the sex is great, and new ideas/positions that don’t even always include the bed, always lead there by the end of the night anyway. Warm and satisfied, curled around each other still naked, on Pran’s expensive sheets never gets old to Pat either.

However, one month into being boyfriends who sleep together, Pat discovered something huge about Pran and that easily takes position as the best thing about sharing a bed with Pran.

———

Pat gently closes the lid on Pran’s laptop trying not to nudge his boyfriend too much from where Pran has fallen asleep on his chest halfway though the movie.

Pat places the laptop down on the floor next to the bed, letting the soft glow of the fairy lights, guide him as he shuffles down the bed, trying to gently take Pran with him so they can get under the covers properly.

Just when Pat believes he has successfully completed his mission with no errors, he hears a loud huff from against his collarbone and readies himself for a dressing down by his awoken boyfriend.

“I told you Louis, that lamp will not fit into that space. The picture frames are too low and the boxes are too close together.” Pran mumbles, and Pat blinks. It definitely isn’t the sentence he thought would be coming from Pran’s mouth if he accidentally woke up him. Pat tries to tilt his head to see if he can see Pran’s face to see if this is some sort of joke, only to have Pran rub his nose a tad aggressively against his neck, making Pat squirm. Pat can feel the frown on his loves face as it presses more into Pat’s neck.

“Yes, well, the giraffe was put into a giraffe sized space. This lamp is not being put in a space big enough for a tall lamp. Louis this is all your fault. Mae tell him.” Pran mumbles frustrated, and Pat chokes back laughter.

Pran, who keeps many of his thoughts to himself, is sleep talking. Not only that but is complaining about architecture. Pat loves him so much, and also wishes he could reach for his phone right now to record some evidence, because he knows Pran will deny this until the bitter end.

Pran huffs loudly again but Pat feels him relax against his chest more as he fully drops off to sleep, leaving Pat to chuckle hoping this will happen again and he can get a recording.

———

The sleep talking happens a few more times, mostly when Pran is exhausted or stressed, but sometimes just randomly. Pat managed to get a few short clips but hasn’t shown Pran yet, in fear that he might not be as comfortable sharing his space if he thinks he’s going to say something embarrassing.

Pat, however, loves it and tries to stay awake longer than Pran even if it’s only a hear a few silly sentences. Pat’s favourite lines consist of:

“The leprechaun beside the bed was trying to kill me and you did nothing to help Pat. I had to get the garlic all on my own.”

“Korn, listen to me. Can you please listen to me? *huffs loudly* You can’t just….fine, I hope you lose all your mints in the slot machine.”

“Well fuck you too! I hope your frogs top hat falls off, and your ducks put holes in all your woolly socks.”

“There are planks of wood on my pillow and I absolutely cannot sleep until you move them. They are stacked like Jenga and I can’t sleep with them. Pat, move them so I can sleep. Thank you baby, now my head will be able to sleep comfortably.”

“Pat is the best, so you will just have to find someone else to like, because he’s my favourite building stuff guy.”

The last one had really made Pat happy, so much so that even Pran had commented when they had breakfast together the next morning. Pat still didn’t say anything though, wanting to keep this lovely secret to himself for a bit longer.

After months of funny, sweet and weird interactions, Pat decided to finally confess what has been happening after an incident one night Pran was unwell.

Pat startles awake to a thudding out in the hallway and his boyfriend missing from their bed. Pat quickly gets up to make sure Pran is okay. He has been really unwell for the last two days and Pat had been taking care of him, even if Pran had mostly slept and occasionally been sick.

Now though, Pat finds Pran sitting in front of the front door, in his pyjamas, attempting to lace up Pat’s rugby boots. “Pran, what are you doing baby?” Pat asks softly, wondering if Pran will answer him at all.

“I’m going to play rugby with Wai.” Pran mumbles after a few moments of silence, his tongue sticking out as he looks at the laces, eyes still half shut and completely unfocused.

Pat gently places his hand on top of Pran’s to stop him from trying to tie the laces. Pran’s hair is plastered to his forehead with sweat and his cheeks are still tinged pink from the fever he is still fighting off.

“How about we go back to bed first. It’s pretty late to play rugby and I’m sure Wai will be happy to play tomorrow.” Pat negotiates. Pran seems to tilt his head in thought, even if Pat is sure he is on the edge of falling asleep again, now he doesn’t have any movement of his hands to focus on.

“But, I need to practice.” Is the last thing Pat can coherently understand as Pran continues to babble before drifting on again and slumping against the wall.

Pat gets up and locks the door that Pran seems to have terrifyingly managed to unlock and pulls the boots from Pran’s feet. Pat gently scoops Pran up and carry’s him back to bed, gets a damp wash cloth to wipe down Pran’s sweaty forehead and tucks them both back in for the night, making sure to hold Pran a little more securely.

Pat slept lightly for the rest of the night, lifting his head every time Pran so much as sniffled in his sleep. When he finally awoke properly he still felt exhausted but Pran had more colour in his face and he didn’t feel as warm so Pat felt relieved.

Pat got up and made some toast and tea for Pran to have in his stomach and brought it through to the bedroom to find Pran already sitting himself up gently. Pat let him eat for a bit before bringing up the subject.

“So last night you scared me a bit baby.” Pat tries to say casually as possible but Pran looks up concerned. “I woke up and you had walked to the door, managed to unlock it and tried to put on my rugby boots in your sleep.” Pat explains and Pran squeezes his eyes shut.

“When I get ill I sometimes sleep walk. I didn’t realise I was that unwell. I’m sorry for scaring you. I’ve never hurt myself and I’ve never left the house before. I would have probably not been able to open the door.” Pran explains sheepishly but Pat still thinks about how Pran could have wandered out the door and gotten hurt if Pat hadn’t heard him dropping to the floor to pull on the boots.

“It’s okay, you just gave me a bit of a scare. I didn’t know you sleep walked at all.” Pat explains and Pran nods looking a little embarrassed, but Pat doesn’t want him to feel too bad about something he can’t control.

“I also didn’t know you talked in your sleep.” Pat teases, making Pran groan loudly and cover his face with his hands, and making Pat laugh. “What did I say? Was it embarrassing?” Pran asks desperately.

“Oh no you just wanted to practice rugby with Wai.” Pat explains, letting Pran relax a bit before he teases. “But the times before that you definitely did say some silly things. Listen, I have recordings of my favourites.” Pat says excitedly, making Pran groan louder.

———

Later that evening, Pran is laying on Pat’s chest while they attempt to watch a baking show Pran really likes as he is still exhausted from being unwell. Pat hears mumbles from against his chest again and grins to himself, trying to strain to listen.

“I love you, Pat.” Pat hears and he can physically feel himself brighten at the admission, words they haven’t said to each other yet, and words he didn’t think he would hear Pran say for a while. Knowing his boyfriend is not only dreaming about him but is dreaming about how much he loves him fills Pat with too many emotions, but let’s him know that Pran won’t run if he says those words sooner rather than later.

Pat goes to sleep that night with a smile on his face and so does Pran, but Pat doesn’t need to know he was actually awake, now does he.

Notes:

It was very weird to write again and also very hard to write something that wasn’t a 5+1 things but we go there in the end.

I hope you enjoyed!!! If anyone has any cool ideas for writing I would be interested to hear them in the comments :))))
