Work Text:

**Kate goes to Ernie for advice.**

It’s been a while since the breakup. Kate knows Lucy has a huge support team at her disposal and wishes she had the same. Sure, she could talk to Tennant, but talking to her about Lucy just seems, weird. There’s only one person she can think of who may be willing to listen, so she swallows her pride and goes to his lair.

“Whistler! I wasn’t aware of we had a case with the FBI.”

“You don’t, we don’t. I’m here, uh, on personal business.”

He smirks.

“Ah.”

She starts fidgeting.

“I mean, I know you know, I know everyone probably knows, and I totally understand if you don’t want to talk to me because of loyalty to her, I mean, she’s your friend and I’m, well, not?”

“Wow. That was a lot.”

“Sorry. You know what, this was a mistake. Sorry to have disturbed you, Ernie.”

She turns to leave.

“Hey, it’s not a mistake. The universe brought you here for a reason. How can I help?”

“Are you sure? I don’t want her to be angry with you.”

He chuckles.

“She is small but scary.”

“Yeah.”

He offers her a water.

“Thanks.”

“Yep. You know, I was kinda waiting for this, you coming here for advice.”

“Really? Why?”

“Just a feeling. That’s why I got a second one. Here.”

He hands Kate an envelope similar to what he gave Lucy a few days before.

“Hoʻoponopono? A healer?

He nods.

“I gave the same thing to Lucy. Her appointment is Saturday.”

“Wait, Lucy’s going to go? How did you persuade her?”

“I told her the truth. She is sad and hurting and that it hurt to see her like that. She said she was fine but I told her she should be more fine. She’s not taking care of herself, well, her emotional self. She broke down and agreed.”

“B-broke down? You mean, cried?”

He nods.

“She then said if I called her here just to make her cry that she was never coming here again.”

Kate smiles.

“Sounds like her.”

“So, I think if the Kahuna can help her, the Kahuna can help you.”

“Okay. But in the meantime, what can I do to show her that I’m still here, that I miss her, that I want to try and work things out, if she’s willing, whatever the outcome. I messed up. I know that. How can I fix it? I-I love her.”

She sits down in a heap, crying.

“Oh, oh, um, here.”

He hands her a box of tissues.

“Thanks. I’m sorry, Ernie.”

“Stop apologizing. I’m not mad. You’re hurting, just like Lucy. You were right, though. I am team Lucy but I’m also team Kacy.”

Team what now?

“Kacy, a combination of Kate and Lucy. Ka for Kate and Cy for, you know what, never mind.”

“Does Lucy know you made up a name for us?”

“No, of course not. She’d tell me it was dumb and make me stop, but that’s besides the point. I honestly believe you two have something special. I’ve been an ear for her.”

She smiles.

“She’s so lucky to have people like you in her life.”

He waves her off.

“So, what’s your idea to win her back?”

She sits for a second, thinking.

“Yeah, I got nothing. I was thinking of just asking her to coffee or something just to hang out and talk but the more I think about that, the lamer it sounds. Then I was thinking of bowling, which was her idea originally. Rock-N-Bowl.”

“Yeah, that place is fun.”

Kate smiles.

“I’m sure it is, but not if you want to talk to someone, though now I think about it, she may prefer it.”

He chuckles.

“Look, I don’t think she’s expecting anything over the top. She did think you were embarrassed by her, even though I said you weren’t, were you? You can answer later. Anyway, I know you wanted to keep your relationship a secret, which she obliged. Why was that?”

He stares at her.

“O-oh, you want me to answer now, um, okay. I wasn’t embarrassed by her, not at all. I was embarrassed by myself. It’s hard for me to be all expressive and smiley. I really tried, but, it’s not me. She knows I like to keep things compartmentalized, so she agreed to keep our relationship secret. I know it was a big ask and not truly fair to her. I really wanted things to work with us in all aspects, uh, outside of the, you know.”

She blushed as Ernie nods.

“Be truthful with me, Ernie. Have I lost her for good? Am I wasting my time?”

“I think she’s conflicted. I asked her how you broke her heart and she didn’t say, so I don’t know exactly what happened to cause such heartache.”

“She…she met my ex-girlfriend who didn’t know she was my ex-girlfriend because I never officially ended things with her and I truly never thought I’d ever see again when I moved here from D.C. making her think she was my sidepiece.”

His eyes widen more than she ever thought they could.

“Whoa. That sounds like a really bad romance novel.”

“I tried to explain, but she was understandably pissed. I went to see later after her undercover assignment…”

“This happened before her first undercover assignment?”

“Yes. I didn’t know which is probably why she came over, to tell me what she could. When I came in here and you and Tennant told me she was missing…I couldn’t breathe.”

“Yeah, I picked up on that. I think Tennant did, too, by the way.”

“She’d be blind not to have. I didn’t care. I was upset over what had happened earlier and then sick to my stomach thinking I’d lost her forever. I waited for her when she got back and tried to explain but she told me I wasn’t a bet worth taking anymore.”

“Ooh, harsh.”

“Yeah. I deserved it.”

“You really think that?”

She nods.

“Whistler, I’ve seen the way you two are together, before and after. It looks like you’ve tried to give her space, tried to be there for her, yeah, I heard about the elevator.”

She shies away.

“I think it’s also safe to say that Lucy is stubborn, am I right?”

“Just a smidge.”

Kate pinches her fingers together as they both chuckle.

“I never expected her to come running back into my arms after I formally apologized, but I was hoping for some kind of forgiveness and hopefully friendship. I know it will take time but, I’m scared. I’ve never felt like this before with anyone and I starting to think I never will again.”

He pats her on the shoulder.

“Make your appointment with the healer. Hopefully they will give you some clarity. Afterwards, stop by and let me know how it went if you want.”

“Thank you, Ernie.”

She makes an appointment as soon as she gets home.

A few days go by and she decides to put Ernie out of his misery by telling him how things went.

“Hey! How’d it go?”

“It was, interesting.”

He gawks.

“Interesting? That’s all you have to say?”

She smiles and rolls her eyes.

“It felt, for lack of better words, healing. I didn’t know how much I was holding in and not just about Lucy. I feel like a different person, well, as different as I can be. It was very helpful, thank you.”

He high fives her.

“I am so happy to hear that! Good for you!”

She blushes.

“Has Lucy come to see you? No, no you don’t have to tell me that. Sorry.”

“I’m not a doctor, I have no confidentiality, but yeah, not going to say anything other than she looks a lot better.”

Kate clenches her jaw and takes a deep breath.

“That’s good. I’m glad she’s doing better.”

“Yeah. She was making me sad.”

She smiles.

“So, should I bother trying or did she find enough clarity to not want to be bothered by me anymore?”

“No, no don’t think like that. If anything, I think it’s the opposite. I think she realized even more how much she really likes you. I think she’s waiting on you.”

“Waiting on me? For what?”

“To make a grand gesture of sorts.”

Kate almost gags.

“A grand gesture? For Lucy? We are talking about the same Lucy, right? Short, beautiful smile, eyes to get lost in.”

Ernie smirks.

“Have you never seen a romantic comedy or whatnot? Have you never seen Top Gun?”

“You…you want me to sing in front of her?”

“Okay, maybe not. How about Say Anything?”

“You want me to stand outside her house with a boombox?”

They both laugh.

“Yeah, guess not. Ooh! I got it! Something she will never expect but absolutely love.”

“I’m all ears.”

A few weeks later, Tennant invites everyone over to her house for a party to celebrate the end of a very hard case.

Kate changes five times before deciding on the right outfit. She sends a quick text to Ernie before she leaves. Walking up to the house, she spots Ernie with Lucy outside. They see her and he quickly makes an excuse to go back inside leaving Lucy there as she walks up.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

“How are you?”

“Good. You?”

“Good. Nice night out.”

Lucy just stares.

“Um, do you think we can talk for a minute?”

Lucy shuffles.

“This isn’t the place, Whistler.”

She sighs.

“I-I know. I just wanted to talk for a minute, that’s all. I just wanted…needed…to say something. Please?”

She slowly approaches Lucy who’s standing perfectly still. She reaches for her hand and surprisingly, Lucy doesn’t stop her.

“Lucy, the past few months have been hell. You and I have been dancing around each other since I apologized. I need you to know something. I love you. I’m so in love with you that it hurts not being able to be near you. I need you to know that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make you happy, even if that means staying away. No matter what, I will always be here for you. No more secrets. No more hiding. I’m all in. Get it, all in.”

Lucy giggles as tear stream down her face.

“You’re such a dork.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Kate, are you sure? I was pretty mean to you. You didn’t deserve that. How can you possible still say you love me after the way I acted?”

Kate closes the gap between them and looks deep into Lucy’s eyes.

“I know I messed up. I had a very hard time forgiving myself for hurting you and thought I deserved to be unhappy, but let me make one thing clear, I never stopped loving you, Luce.”

She runs her thumb across her cheek, wiping a tear away.

“Lucy, will you give me…us…another chance?”

Lucy melts into her touch, stands on her tip toes, and kisses her.

“I love you, too, Kate. Yes, I’ll give you…us…another chance.”

They kiss again only to be reminded they’re not alone when everyone erupts in applause, hooting and hollering from Tennant’s balcony.

They both blush profusely and take a bow.

“Team Kacy for the win!”

Everyone stares at Ernie.

“What?”

“Team Kacy. You know, Kacy, a combination of Kate and Lucy. Ka for Kate and Cy for, you know what, never mind.”

Everyone bursts out laughing as Lucy and Kate join them on the balcony. Jane hands them both a drink.

“A toast! To catching the bad guys and to love!”

Everyone clinks glasses as Jane pulls the ladies aside.

“I am very happy you both got your heads out of your asses, and even though there’s no rules against our departments dating, I have some. We’ll go over them later, got it?”

The both nod.

“Good. Now please enjoy yourselves.”

They both look at each other and chuckle.

After being congratulated by everyone, enjoying some amazing food, and enduring non-stop questions, they sneak off.

Kate pulls Lucy close, kissing her lightly.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

Lucy tucks a stray hair behind Kate’s ear.

“Um, would you like to maybe, get out of here?”

Kate blushes.

“Yes, I would, but is that wise?”

“I don’t think Jane will mind if we cut out early.”

Kate giggles.

“That’s not what I was thinking but, agreed.”

“Then, shall we?”

Kate squeezes her close.

“Luce, don’t you think we should take things slow this time?”

She smirks, wiggling her eyebrows.

“I have no problem starting slow…”

Lucy walks away leaving Kate to pick up her jaw from the floor.

She walks over towards Lucy’s car as she puts down her window, giving her a seductive once over with her eyes.

“My place.”

Lucy drives away as Kate all but happy dances while speed walking to her car.

Kate shoots off a quick text to Ernie and Jane thanking them before calmly driving away to go be with the love of her life.
