Seeing You Smile Again

Summary:

"Ken's eyes softened as he looked at his daughter, feeling a warmth he hasn't felt in a long time as he saw her smile. It was bright."

----

Or Ken and An have a talk where Ken realizes that An finally got her bright smile back since Kohane became her partner.

Notes:

I swear we are not exploring An's loneliness and abandonment issues enough and how Kohane was the first stable thing that came into her life.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"And you wouldn't believe how crazy the crowd went during Kohane's solo part, she was amazing, incredible, she was so good, she-"

Ken sighed as he tried to tune An out while wiping down the bar.

It was after closing hours at Weekend Garage, a time that Ken always enjoyed as he slowly cleaned up the café after a hard day of work. It was one of the few times he could spend alone, in silence, with only his own thoughts to keep him company. Overall it was a moment when he could bask in a small, but not unwelcome, time of solitude. Except that this wasn't the case tonight, as An and her team finished their performance earlier than expected and An seemed to still have a lot of energy.

Don't get him wrong, he loved his daughter and he would always listen to her, but she was going at it for almost an hour now and Ken was really starting to miss his alone time.

"Hey dad, are you even listening to me?" he knew she had a frown on her face even without looking at her.

"I am I am." he wasn't. "Kohane is amazing, yes." but he knew at least that was the gist of what An kept on rambling about. He raised his head in time to see An's face brighten up again.

"She is, isn't she?"

Ken just shook his head as he felt a smile start to form on his face. He put aside the tablecloth he used to wipe the tables and bar and turned around, grabbing two cups and starting to make his daughter and himself some coffee.

An shot him a grateful smile as she stretched her legs in front of her before continuing her speech.

"Even so, it's amazing how fast she progressed." making sure her dad was looking at her as she let a sly smirk form on her face, she then added. "At this rate we might surpass RAD WEEKEND faster than you think."

Pouring coffee in both of their cups and making his way towards An, he sat down down across from her and took a sip from his own cup before replying.

"I am looking forward to it." his smile genuine which made An's smirk change into a smile matching his.

"It used to feel like such a distant dream, but I know the four of us can do it now." she reached for her own cup, taking a sip from it and letting out a hum in approval before continuing. "Of course there is still so much we need to do, and then comes the question of what we're gonna do after that, but I know I have nothing to worry about."

Ken's eyes softened as he looked at his daughter, feeling a warmth he hasn't felt in a long time as he saw her smile. It was bright.

"Whyyyyy are you looking at me that way and not saying anything?"

He took one last sip of his coffee before he set his cup down. "It's just good to see you smile again, that's all."

An tilted her head, a confused frown forming on her face as she followed, setting her own cup down.

"Hm? What do you mean, I've always been smiling?"

Ken just shook his head, standing up from his seat. "It's nothing."

He didn't let An linger on it for too long as he went and grabbed a broom, tossing it towards her.

"I listened to you ramble for over an hour, now make yourself useful and sweep the floor."

An let out a groan as she stood up, grabbing the broom and going to the corner of the café to start working.

"Yes sir."

He chuckled as he went and grabbed his and An's cups, making his way to the kitchen to wash them.

You say you've always been smiling but...your smile was never the same once your uncle and aunt left and people started moving on from RAD WEEKEND. It started losing color along with Vivid street. I'm happy that it's more bright than ever now. Thank you, Kohane.

Coming back in the café, he noticed An was almost done.

"Hey An?"

"Hm?"

"Remind me to give Kohane a drink on the house the next time she comes over."

"Noted." she was about to get back to her work before it hit her. "Wait, you charge Kohane for her drinks?!"

Ken just looked at her with an incredulous look on his face.

"She comes here so often because of you that it would literally harm our business if I didn't."

She whined, letting her head rest on the broom.

"But dad...we can always charge Akito double?"

"An." Ken deadpanned, making An look like a kicked puppy when she realized she couldn't convince him.

He chuckled, making his way towards her and ruffling her hair.

"Don't worry, when you'll bring her on a date here, I'll make sure not to charge her."

"Yes yes." it took An a full ten seconds before her brain fully caught up to what he said. "Wait, wha- We're not- I mean Kohane doesn't-"

Ken couldn't help the fit of laughter that overtook him when he saw An stumbling over her words, face redder than he ever saw it. In the end she just whined again, hiding her face in her own hands.

"Why are you like this?"

He ruffled her hair again, a grin plastered on his face as he answered. "I'm just pushing you to finally take that first step. You know, it took me a long time to finally get the courage to ask your mother out too, and-"

"Ah, I get I get it! Can we not talk about that?!" she immediately interrupted him, brushing his hand off as she felt her face grow even hotter if that was possible. "How did you even know?"

Ken crossed his arms laughing. "You're even more obvious than Akito is around Toya." Letting his grin grow, he then added. "The only thing more obvious is Kohane around you."

An blinked once, then twice, not fully catching up to what her dad was saying. "What is that even supposed to mean?"

He uncrossed his arms, deciding to call it a day, and started to make his way towards his room, but not before answering to An teasingly.

"I don't know, ask her on a date and you might find out."

With that he left alone a still blushing mess An all confused, unable to piece together what just happened. In the end she just sighed, willing her blush to go away as she continued to sweep the floor.

Asking Kohane out...might be nice.

Notes:

Shout out to Ken being an actual loving and supporting father. Him adopting Akito and Toya when?
