close to me

Summary:

laurie spends some time alone with nancy, far from prying eyes and campfires. then, she gets an idea.
(her good friend in this place-- the word "friend" definitely doesn't taste bitter when she thinks of it. at least nancy is sweet.)

Work Text:

In their own little corner of the world, away from the campfire, the fizzled out conversation hung in the air; talks of misadventures before the realm, thoughts on their old friends (some dead, some not), old hobbies and pastimes and things they wished they never took for granted. It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence– Laurie never felt that way with Nancy. Being uncomfortable around her would be like being uneasy with the back of her hand.

But the air did feel sad. They didn’t need to talk about knives that could’ve gone through backs and monsters towering in shopping malls to feel… fucked up, to put it bluntly.

Eyes flickering between the ground and the girl in front of her, Laurie whispered, “We’ll be alright, Nancy.”

There was a sigh. “You think so?”

“I do,” she said. “We’ll get to a day with no slashers, or ghosts, or monsters out to get us. Nothing that can’t be stopped with a bullet between the eyes.”

“Hm,” Nancy huffed. “I’d like that.”

An idea came to mind, and hell, what did she have to lose. But it did set her heart in motion far faster than in a trial.

Laurie stood, prompting Nancy to look away and say, “Oh, um, I don’t really feel like going back yet.”

“Not that,” Laurie said, pulling her up. “I just thought… There's something we can do regardless of where we are.”

“Oh?” Nancy tilted her head. “What would that be?”

Well, time to summon every bit of courage, audacity, and… Hell, they were close friends, why was she so nervous to ask this? Hadn’t she just been thinking about how comfortable she feels around Nancy all the time? Well, she wasn’t uncomfortable of course, just nervous, yeah that was the word, just a bundle of nerves and-

She breathed in, and breathed out, squishing that train of thought that was sure to crash and burn in a fire of overthinking.

“Would you dance with me?”

Surprise flashed over Nancy’s face. Right as Laurie was beginning to worry that it was an odd offer, a weird idea or something, she found their hands slipping into each other.

Like two puzzle pieces, made just to fit the other.

“With no music?” Nancy asked with that damn, specific sort of smile that Laurie could never pull her eyes away from. “I mean, I wouldn’t mind.”

It wasn’t much of a dance, more of a sway, two bodies holding each other with just a little bit of space between them. The taller of the two was just the right height to be able to easily rest her chin on the shorter. She asked is this alright? and received a simple and content mhm. They moved in tandem, drifting by the pond together. There was no rush to it. Strangely enough, Laurie no longer felt nervous, despite being closer than ever.

Nancy moved her head from under Laurie’s, instead pressing her forehead to the other’s. One hand moved to cup her cheek. Laurie’s own settled on top of it. The wind blew, but neither of them paid any mind to the cold. Any sense of cold was burned out by the warmth of just having each other.

No, they weren’t two teenagers who had been torn from their chaotic lives and thrown into even worse circumstances. They weren’t being hunted, or sacrificed, or anything. They were… two girls. Maybe they snuck away during a party, or were out camping together, or… well, just anything normal. Not trapped.

They could dance, sway, whatever you call it, away from prying eyes or speculating whispers. They could be alright, just the two of them. Nancy’s hand slipped from her cheek to her jaw, still holding it tenderly. The moonlight illuminated the two of them, and Laurie wondered what her partner looked like in the sun.

Just the two of them.

A song came to mind, one she’d sung to herself that Halloween night.

Laurie hummed for only Nancy to hear, lyrics she only half remembered;

I wish I had you all alone

Just the two of us

I would hold you close to me

So close to me
