Holidays Exist Apparently

Summary:

Loid Forger gets a lot of jobs every day. Every. Single. Day. And it NEVER stops. He knows he’s going to receive a new mission today, but his family look at him with slightly dejected looks at him going to work on a holiday and he decided that it’s time to give in to the holiday.

Work Text:

Loid Forger, as commonly known in public, wakes up groggily. Eyes still sleepy despite the sun already rising, as evident by the sunlight slowly pouring into his room.

The week just keeps on dragging on and on and on-

Beyond the door of his room, he hears the giggling of Yor and the laughter of Anya, as well as the clicking of ceramics and metal spoons.

He shoots up from his position on the bed, abruptly sitting up. He cursed at himself, wondering how many minutes more he spent staring at the ceiling and hoping that he won’t get any call about any new missions. It seems that he was staring for a bit too long, and a bit too intense if he hadn’t heard the initial noises the girls make in the morning when they wake up.

Loid is usually up earlier than the two to prepare for another day of handling out missions, and to prepare food for the family.

But here he is, early Monday morning contemplating whether he should show up to work or not.

He sighs, getting up and getting ready for the day. He goes to the kitchen and smiles at the sight of his family happily chatting at each other. Sure, the sight of Yor near the stove is a tad bit concerning but she has been learning how to cook recently.

“Good morning, Papa!” Came Anya’s enthusiastic greeting, followed by Yor’s less enthusiastic but still bright greeting. “Mama made pancakes! They’re fluffy!”

“That’s right!” Yor turned back to the stove to flip the pancake on the pan. “I finally learned how to properly do it!”

“Oh? That’s good then, Yor. I’m leaving our breakfast in your capable hands.” Loid brings out his signature ‘Loid smile’, appearing to be supportive as always.

It never occurs to him that sometimes, the smile comes out more genuinely than he ever realizes.

It’s a good thing, Anya would smile to herself when she notices.

Yor sputters and blushes, then turns around to focus on the pancake to hide the redness in her face. She takes off the cooked pancake and puts it on a plate, serving it to the table before getting her pancake mix and cooking another one.

Loid sits down and pours his own coffee, not wanting to bother Yor who seems to be concentrated on the pancake. Besides, Loid needs something else to do to not remind himself of the day’s agenda.

The Forger family finishes their breakfast, and Loid goes to the bathroom to prepare. When he comes out with his suit on, the girls in the house stare at him.

He slowly raises an eyebrow. “Do I have something on my shirt?”

“Ahh, no, no, nothing like that, but…” Yor trails off, looking away momentarily.

“Papa’s going to work?” Anya questions. Loid sees that as odd because Anya should know that he will go to work, but hey, most of what Anya does is odd.

“Yes? It’s still Saturday?”

“But Mama gets a day off!” Both Anya and Loid turn to Yor.

“Ahh… it’s a holiday today and nothing much was happening in the office, so we were allowed to take the day off…” Yor shakes her head, “But doctors like you probably still work even on holidays anyway, so that’s understandable!”

Holidays? His work as a spy was never confined to holidays. In fact, even more known holidays like Halloween, Christmas, and New Year have no effect on him and his work. His whole spy career never really stops.

But then again, he always only gets one mission a day, or week, or month if it’s too hard. This is the first time he mixes his missions.

In fact, he’s going to head out to Frankie’s place to receive a new mission… but of course, he’s in a family now, and he must keep up with appearances – and holidays, now – if he wants to convince people that he’s a family man.

He brings out his ‘Loid persona’. “Ahh, no worries, I was just heading out to the office to drop off some files, then I’ll be right back. Would you like to go out for some family bonding?” The last sentence, he adds as an afterthought.

“Yes!” Anya jumps in excitement, and Yor giggles at her daughter. “Can we take Bond out with us?”

The dog in question perks up but doesn’t necessarily seem too excited like his owner.

“Of course!” Loid agrees. The agree on a meeting place at the park, two hours from now, which means Loid has two hours to beg, plead ask for a day off. “I’ll be off now!”

Funnily enough, Loid doesn’t even know what this supposed holiday is. The day doesn’t spark any memory in him. Then again, as mentioned, he wasn’t restricted by holidays, so it didn’t matter if he knew or not these tiny little holidays scattered over the calendar.

“Frankie, what’s today’s holiday?” Loid asks, leaning over the counter of the other man’s shop.

“Hell, if I know.” Frankie replies, looking glum as ever. “I thought you spies don’t stop working even on holidays?”

“We do, but Anya and Yor seem to be forlorn that I’m working today.”

“Sucks for them, huh?” Frankie sighs, “Well, here’s your new mi-”

“And that’s why I want to talk to the higher ups about a day off.” Loid interjects.

“Ha.” Was Frankie’s only response.

“You know… it’s Labor Day.” Loid speaks confidently after a quick Google search, facing his main contact for WISE. “I think a day off is essential.”

“A day off, you say?” Sylvia peeks over the files in her hands to look at Twilight, currently known as Loid Forger.

“Yes. It is of extreme importance that I keep up with today’s holiday, seeing as it affects my relationship with Yor and Anya, hence affecting Operation Strix.”

Sylvia hums, “Well, I suppose that’s true.” She puts down the files on the table. “But do know that if you take a day off now, you’re going to be worked to the bone tomorrow.”

Not that he isn’t already worked to the bone anyway, but he still nods. Sylvia smiles and waves him off. His request for a day off approved.

And so, he meets up with his family at the park, approximately 2 hours and 3 minutes later, ready to keep up with Anya’s conflicting but endearing moods, as well as Yor’s odd yet understandable behavior.

His signature ‘Loid smile’ is out for everyone to see, and he doesn’t even realize how beautiful it looks like when intermingled with genuine feelings of happiness.
