Work Text:
Biana liked being certain of things. For example, Biana was certain she would get into foxfire. She studied endlessly for the entrance exams and did as much as she could to prepare.
At the end of the day, she was getting ready to go to foxfire next week, and Della was braiding her hair. “Mom?” she asked, watching her mother in the mirror.
“Yes?” Della said, glancing up.
“What if I can’t do it? What if I can’t manifest or do good in my classes or everyone else makes fun of me?” Biana asked, letting the fears that had plagued her spill out. “I just don’t want to mess up.”
“You won’t. You know why?” Della said, resting her hands on Bianas shoulder.
“No.” Biana shook her head.
“Because you’re a vacker. And You will be great.” Alden interrupted.
So Biana was certain she would do great.
Biana likes being certain of things so when she met Maruca Chebota and Maruca shared her Prattles with her she was certain that they would be friends.
They weren’t bestie for life or anything, but they were always together. Though Biana hated to admit she wasn’t sure they really knew each other, they just knew the masks they both had. But Biana was sure she could make it work.
When her dad wanted her to be friends with Sophie, Biana wasn’t sure. But she would do it and Be certain of it because she was a Vacker.
Biana was certain she had to hide her scars. Because they were imperfections and a Vacker had to be perfect. Biana was certain she was a girl because what else could she be without disappointing everyone? Biana was definitely certain she liked guys. Because that was standard and she was certainly going to get her match list and get married eventually.
Most of all, Biana was certain she had to apologize to Maruca. For forgetting about her though Biana could never truly forget.
So Biana leaped to Maruca's house and when Ms. Lesedi said Maruca was out back Biana ran out the back door to see Maruca sitting by the lake singing.
And When Maruca turned to look back at Biana, it was like Biana saw her for the first time. And then Biana knew ae was only certain of one thing.
