Chapter Text

"Hey, Sy-on boy. Guess what I got?" Anya suddenly appeared in front of Damian, Ewen, and Emile who were walking down the hallway. Damian raised his eyebrow. She just knew once Damian finds out she has a dog, he'd want to play with her. She called it 'Operation Dog', she'd be friends with him in no time!

Anya smirked and continued, "A dog."

Anya looked really proud of herself and was expecting Damian to be suddenly interested in her, but of course, she's met with sy-on boy's unimpressed expression.

"Yeah? So what?"

Anya fell to her knees on the floor. Oh no. Operation dog failed. The world is doomed .

Ewen and Emile laughed and complimented Damian's savageness. Desmond's second son, however, was utterly confused. Huh? Was what I said that mean? Why is she being so dramatic?   He didn't really want to be mean, he just had no idea why she was telling him. Anya was still on the floor so Damian decided to indulge her a little, so she'd stop sulking. Not because he cared though! She's just in the way!

"Name? The dog's, I mean." Emile shot him a surprised look and he pretended not to see. Anya suddenly lifted her head and stood up.

"His name is..." Her eyes sparkled and her voice was in a high pitched tone. She was thrilled that Damian suddenly got interested. The boy felt quite embarrassed at her reaction, didn't he just ask for the dog's name? Why was she looking that happy? Damian slightly blushed.

"Yeah, that's what I asked." He said, still red, but getting a little impatient now.

"His name is… dog."

Okay. Damian should have expected this.

"You are wholly unfit to own a pet."

And they all walked past Anya who had a shocked expression once again.

The next day, Anya brought her family picture, one where Bond was included. Also yes, she named her dog after the character from her favorite show. She and Becky walked to their room together and when she saw sy-on boy sitting alone at his desk, she immediately went up to him, completely ignoring her best friend's story about the romance show she was watching.

"Sy-on boy." Anya stood in front of his desk with a smirk on her face.

"What do you want, Forger? It's still early." Damian wasn't really in the mood today. He called at home yesterday, hoping he could speak to his father, but of course, he didn't have the time. Ewen and Emile knew better than just leave him some time alone when he's not in the mood so they went to the cafeteria to get some breakfast for the meantime.

"Heh." And she slammed their family picture on his desk. In her head, Sy-on boy was supposed to say: "Wow! Is this your dog? He's so big! Bring him to my house! Let's make him match with my dog!"

Sy-on boy was supposed to say that. But he didn't. In fact, sy-on boy didn't say anything. He just stared at the picture. He was not really in the mood to speak, let alone banter with his classmate. Lucky for him, he didn't need to open his mouth for Anya to hear him.

Ah, is this her family? Her mom seems nice. Her dad looks like he takes care of them a lot. So this is the dog she was talking about. She got it as a reward, I guess. How lucky of her. I ace so many exams and my father doesn't give me anything, not even his time. Huh, I don't even think we have a photo like this at home.

Anya's eyebrows turned into a knot. Something was wrong with sy-on boy, he was not saying anything. And sy-on boy always had something to say.

"Sy-on boy, are you okay?" Damian's eyes found her face and she looked genuinely concerned, which caught him off guard.

"Y-Yeah, of course! Idiot! So you have a family picture, what do you want me to do about that?! You look dumb in it though." And he turned away from her. Damian's mind was a mess, he'd been thinking about his dad since last night and had been wondering how he's going to make him notice him. "Are you done here? Can you leave me alone now?"

She definitely has parents who care about her and give her their time and attention, must be nice. I wish my father cared about me, too. I wish somebody cared about what I think.

Anya continued to stand in front of him. Sy-on boy was acting weird. He said he doesn't have a family picture. He also said his father doesn't make time for him. Anya realized sy-on boy was actually feeling sad. She remembered about not having anyone by her side. No Pa, no Ma, or even Bond. She immediately stopped thinking about it because she was going to cry.

I miss home, but then again, hardly anyone was ever there anyway.

She looked at sy-on again who had his chin leaning on his right hand. He was staring outside the window, as if he didn't notice Anya was still there. Sy-on was feeling alone. It made Anya sad, too. She knew too well how that feels.

Anya stared at her shoes, deep in thought. Pa said she should befriend him, right? Hmm, if she wants to be his friend, she has to cheer him up! Friends do that, right? What does Anya do when she's sad? Eat? She immediately searched her backpack to look for her peanuts.

"Want some?" Anya offered him her favorite snack. Damian looked at her and refused.

"No, thank you. I want you to leave." She's still here? Ugh. And he laid his head in his arms, not wanting to interact anymore. Anya was being annoying, maybe Damian will just pretend to sleep.

Anya was panicking. No no no, this can't be! She didn't like this sy-on! If he cannot make sy-on boy happy, then what kind of friend is she??? (They're not friends, if you ask Damian).

I miss playing with Max, too. All I do is study.

Anya made a loud "aha!" which startled her 'sleeping' classmate. That’s right! Max is sy-on boy’s dog! Anya crouched down and placed her hands on the edge of Damian's desk, her chin was resting above her small fingers.

"We should play with your dog, sy-on boy!!! What's he like? Bond makes me ride on his back and it's really fun! Have you tried that with your dog?"

"Dummy, I don't see my dog because I live in the school's dorm." Damian angrily said as he lifted his head to look at Anya, who was starting to really annoy him. "He's in our hou--" He abruptly stopped when he saw her smiling face so close to him.

"What are you doing?!" He sat back up really quickly.

"Ah, is that so? Let's go to your house, then!" She happily said. It wasn’t a suggestion that had a hidden reason. In fact, it took Anya five seconds to realize what she said. Oh, this was actually the mission, I forgot. So if sy-on says yes, Pa will really be happy! And then we'll have world peace and Anya will become a hero. Anya still had her chin resting on her hands. Damian would have found it cute, if she weren't so annoying. Actually, scratch that. He found her annoyingly cute. But he will not admit that.

"Y-You can't just invite yourself over to someone else's house!" Seriously, Damian was not in the mood but Anya was distracting him from his thoughts. All he could suddenly think about was her big green eyes staring at him at that moment.

Anya suddenly stood straight and tapped her chin. Ah, Anya thought she could finally go to his house. Anyway, she needed to do something! If sy-on boy wants to play with his dog, and they can't go to his house, maybe she can let him play with her dog instead? That's right!

"I know! How about you come over to my house? I'll let you play with Bond." And she smiled at him.

"WHAT?" Was she really inviting him to her house? They're not even friends, why would he come over?

Suddenly, the bell rang, which meant that the class will soon start.

"Ah, Mr. Henderson is going to be here soon. See you later, sy-on boy!"

"I didn't say I'll go!"

But Anya was already on her seat. Damian sighed.

The whole day, Anya kept repeating she'll see sy-on boy later after class. And Damian kept saying he will not.

"It's Friday today. Do you have any plans later, Anya?" Becky asked during lunch when they were lining up to get food.

"Ah, yes. Sy-on boy said he'll come over to my house so we can play with Bond." Anya casually replied. Said sy-on boy was lining up for food as well and was within earshot.

"Really?" Becky asked again, surprised. She didn't know they'd become friends. Emile and Ewen also looked at Damian in confusion.

"No, I did not!" He shouted at the pink-haired girl who just pretended not to hear.

"Yeah, he asked me this morning if he could see my dog. He saw the picture, you know, so he immediately asked if he could come." Anya blunty lied. Becky looked at Damian who was glaring at Anya and decided not to say anything anymore. She didn't have any idea what was up with the two of them.

The thing was, Anya had been hearing Damian's thoughts about his father all day, even during classes. It was weird, it was the first time she saw her sy-on boy distracted. Anya kept hearing sy-on boy ask himself why he wasn't good enough for his father. She didn't like it when he thought like that. It kinda reminded her that if she didn't do well herself, her Pa's mission will fail and she'll get tossed away again. It was a familiar feeling, she wanted Damian to stop thinking about it. So when their second class ended, she brought up again her invitation to him and he started reverting back to his old self, which was being mean to her. Seing this, she decided to keep mentioning he'll go to her house, even if he didn't really say he would. Just so he would stop asking himself questions that only made him sad. It worked, Anya thought, clearly satisfied with herself. Even though the sad thoughts only got replaced with 'annoyed-with-anya' thoughts. At least, this was normal.

By the end of the day, the whole class knew Damian was going to visit Anya's house. Some of them actually believed it and some, very well, did not.

"Forger is so lame for making up stories that Damian wanted to visit her home. Hahaha!"

"I know right. Why would he even do that? He's not going to befriend someone like her."

They snickered and whispered to each other. Damian could hear it. Anya didn’t  need to. She knew what the whole class was thinking. Damian swore he saw her wipe tears from her eyes just before their last class started. Ah, not fair. He thought to himself.

And so, when the last teacher was finally done, Damian told his friends not to wait for him, and went straight out of the room. Everyone started whispering again.

"See, Damian can't even wait to go out of the room so Anya will stop pestering him."

"So pathetic."

Anya could hear everything they were saying and Becky had had enough.

"Shut up you pea brains!" Anya's best friend hissed at them and they quickly went out of the room. "Come on, Anya." And she hauled her best friend out of the classroom.

"Ah, I don't even know why you're doing this. Do you really have a crush on him?" Becky was shaking her head as they walked side by side along the hallways.

Anya didn't hear because she was busy thinking about sy-on. Her classmates were so mean. They didn't know what sy-on boy was thinking, so they would not understand. She shook her head. It's okay, Anya. You just wanted to help. She patted herself. Becky looked at her weirdly and then rolled her eyes. Sometimes she really doesn't get Anya. But it seems she really likes Damian, huh? Well, nothing that she could do about that really.

"OMG STOP." Becky suddenly blurted out. Anya almost stumbled on her feet and looked at her friend, confused.

"What is it? What is it?" Anya frantically looked around. "Is there an enemy? Are we fighting aliens?!" Anya looked at her friend and saw Becky looking straight ahead. She followed where her friend was looking and to her surprise– no, actually, to everyone's surprise, since their classmates were also walking towards the gate, there stood Damian with his hands in his pockets.

"Ah, finally. What took you so long?" Damian loudly said, for everyone to hear. Their classmates that were snickering earlier suddenly started walking quickly out of the school grounds. Becky scoffed at them and quickly pulled Anya towards Damian.

"Sy-on boy, what are you doing here? Aren't the dorms on the other side of the building?" Anya genuinely asked. Becky just looked at them both quizzically, not understanding what was going on.

"Tsk. Weren't you the one who invited me?" Damian replied, sounding a bit pissed, but not really. It took Anya ten seconds to get what he meant and when she finally did, her whole face lit up.

"You're really coming over?!" Anya bursted with joy. She jumped up and down and clapped her small hands repeatedly. Her pink curls danced around her face and Damian thought he'd never seen anyone that happy to see him. It made his heart flutter.

"Come on. Before I change my mind." He turned around to walk. Anya swore he saw him smile a little. She remembered how down he looked earlier today and all the sad thoughts she heard from him.

Ah, yes, seeing Damian smile felt like saving the world, indeed.
