Chapter Text

Paige finally did it, she confessed in front of the whole student body about how much she liked the mysterious AJ Campos. She submitted her CalArts Summer Program application and AJ told her that she applied to the summer program in hopes of going together before entering their senior year. 

They were both doing the waiting game and a school break was approaching them where the couple had some time before waiting for their acceptance letters for the CalArts Summer Program.

AJ asked her on a date to a local art gallery. 

Technically, a double date with AJ’s cousin who is from a small town and her college girlfriend. 

Paige remembered their first date where she took AJ to a poetry slam with an artist painting in the background. That’s where they shared their fourth kiss on a rooftop under the stars. She could still see the many colors around AJ whenever she sees her. 

Her iPhone vibrated, AJ texted her. 

Bae-J

Babe, we are outside!

Putting on her mismatch socks and her converse shoes, she told her mom that she was out the door. "Make good choices!" Her mom yelled at her, where Paige rolled her eyes. A silver Honda was parked outside, she saw AJ waving outside the car window. Smiling, Paige made her way to the car. AJ slid over and Paige opened the door, took a seat in the car, closing the door. 

She buckled her seatbelt and AJ kissed her cheek. Blushing slightly, AJ introduced her to the two girls in the front. 

“Paige, this is my cousin, Aster and her girlfriend, Ellie.” 

Both girls turned around and greeted her. Paige could see the family resemblance between AJ and Aster, from the wavy locks and high-bridged nose. Aster’s girlfriend, Ellie, was Asian-American girl with black-framed glasses and her hair in a ponytail. She flashed her a small smile to her, then glanced back at Aster. 

“Nice to finally meet my prima’s girlfriend, Paige.” Aster smiled and started to drive. Paige noticed that Ellie was holding onto Aster’s hand. “So Aster and Ellie…where are you two from?” Paige asked, trying to make conversation. She hoped it didn't seem as a microaggression towards the couple.

A warm hand grabbed onto her own, it was like AJ knew her every move and could read her mind.

“We are both from Squahamish,” Ellie told her. Paige assumed it might be in Washington or Oregon. “I heard you two were trying to get into an art program?” Ellie asked the both of them. “We both applied to CalArts, where are going to school, Ellie?” AJ asked. 

“Grinnell College in Iowa, I’m an English Lit major,” Ellie told the two girls who looked impressed. 

“Aster is applying to art school, we are hoping she gets in an art program.” The girl with spectacles beamed at her girlfriend. 

“How are you doing with a long distance relationship? If I may ask?” Paige stuttered, she does that when she gets really anxious. Aster made eye contact with her through the rear-view mirror, “We make it work, we often write letters and FaceTime every night.”

“That’s sweet.” Paige smiled and looked over to AJ.

Arriving at the art gallery, AJ and Aster paid for the admission tickets. She watched as Aster and Ellie hold hands, making their way into the gallery. AJ took her hand and started to lead her into the museum. She was happy that she put her sketch book in her purse, so maybe she can get some inspiration. 

More like to draw AJ.

While looking at the paintings, the couple would pause and take in the art. Paige would want to glance at AJ, her girlfriend was more beautiful than the art displayed on the wall. She would feel eyes on her, Paige thought that AJ would be looking at her, studying her. 

She heard a small giggle and turned her head to see Aster and Ellie on the opposite side of the gallery. Paige noticed that Aster had a sketch book and Ellie had a notebook. 

“They both have a way with words,” AJ told her quietly. “I’m happy they are together and to show who they are…” Paige noticed that she glanced over to the other couple and continued, “They live in a conservative town and my uncle is a deacon. He was livid when Aster came out and when she told him about dating Ellie.”

Paige nodded her head and held onto AJ’s hand. She remembered telling her mother at a young age and she was accepted for who she was. She couldn’t imagine having to stay in a closet for a long time, she wouldn’t be with AJ.

“Their love story was epic..”AJ said softly. 

“Then let’s focus on our love story…” Paige was drawn into a large canvas painting, leading AJ to it. There was a bench for them to sit down and both of them sat down, still holding hands. The large canvas was made of hues with beautiful strokes. 

“The painting has some bold strokes.” AJ whispered. 

“A great painting is typically five strokes. And they are usually the five boldest strokes in the painting.” Her girlfriend continued.

“This painting is how I see you…when you look me in the eyes with that radiant smile. With so many colors and music playing the background.” Paige smiled at her, ”You have to be my boldest stroke I can make.” She bravely cupped AJ’s face and glancing down at AJ’s lips. Being bold, Paige put her lips on AJ’s. She could feel AJ smile through the kiss and she kissed her back warmly. 

Pulling away, Paige still had her forehead placed against AJ’s. 

The couple looked back at the painting and Paige placed her head on AJ’s shoulder. 

Paige had to admit this had to be one of her happiest moments with AJ.

After looking around the gallery for two hours, the two couples decided to go to AJ’s favorite restaurant. They were all seated and already ordered their food. While waiting for their food, Aster spoke up. 

“So Ajax, Gabs was telling about you and Paige’s epic love story. Are you finally going to tell us?” Aster smirked and held onto Ellie’s hand. Paige saw how her girlfriend scoffed at the nickname, she had ask about the nickname later. 

“You can go first, Aster.” AJ challenged her cousin. Aster scoffed, ”I asked first!”

“I can share how Aster and I got together, if Paige gets to share.” Ellie reasoned with AJ and Aster. The two girls were now looking at her and waited for her response. Paige nodded her head nervously, “Flip a coin?”

Ellie took a quarter and flipped it in the air. 

“Heads.” Paige exclaimed. 

The quarter spun and landed on the table. 

Tails. 

"Oh shit," Paige sighed and looked over to AJ, “It all started with the artist. An artist named KingPun.”

Chapter Text

Paige explained how needed to use an art medium about her happiest moment and it made her think about her childhood crush, Gabby. She talked about how she was getting framed for being the infamous KingPun with her association of wanting to become an artist. Paige went on about joining the track team to find KingPun in hopes of getting together with Gabby and later falling for AJ. 

She explained the “seven minutes in the bathroom” and kissed AJ, then Gabby approached her after the 4X100  relay race at the track meet. It was revealed that Paige already had her first kiss with Gabby, which where AJ was literally crushed. AJ confessed about being KingPun, how she was crushing on Paige since they were kids and being KingPun was the only way Paige would notice her.  

Paige shared, “I had to apologize to her and I didn’t want AJ to be runner-up, I wanted to be with her because of she’s her, you know.” Paige smiled at AJ who was looking flustered, not meeting anyone’s eyes. “I painted a whole mural about my happiest moment, moments with AJ.” 

“Wow Paige, you kissed both Gabby and AJ?” Ellie commented, eating a french fry with a milkshake. “El, give her a break! You two are the cutest,” Aster poked her girlfriend’s cheek and stole a french fry from Ellie’s plate. 

“So Ellie, it’s your turn to share your love story.” AJ countered back at her cousin and her girlfriend.

Paige looked over to her girlfriend after Ellie finished how she got together with Aster. She spoke up first, “Wait, wait, Ellie was writing and texting Aster, where Aster thinking it was Paul. Then you two had a hot springs moment and Ellie spoke up in church where Aster was proposed to?” 

She looked over to AJ who was smiling at the story. 

“I think it’s romantic, with the spray painting and Ellie throwing her bike down to go back kiss Aster.” AJ complimented the pair. “You actually told Aster that you’ll see you in a couple years then started to date.”

“What happened to Paul?” Paige asked the two of them, she found it awkward where he kissed Aster and attempted to kiss Ellie too. “He’s still in Squahamish and making his taco sausages. I’m grateful that he still checks in with my dad and I’m glad he’s one of my best friends.” Paige observed how Ellie smiled widely at mention of Paul. 

“I have my best friend, Dillon. He’s like my platonic soulmate, he was one of the few people I told that I liked girls.” Paige told Ellie and Aster. “Maybe both of you can meet him, how long are you two here for?”

“About three weeks,” Aster told them. 

“Maybe Stacey will throw another party because school’s out?” AJ looked at her. Paige replied,”Stacey is Dillon’s girlfriend.” Aster and Ellie nodded, “Just let us know and we should do go on a double date again.”

“I had fun,”Paige admitted and smiled at AJ,”Hopefully we can plan it soon.”

Paige was getting dropped off, AJ got out the car and walked Paige to the front door. They stopped at the doorstep, Paige faced AJ. She grabbed both of AJ’s hands and smiled, “I had a great time, Bae-J.”

“My heart is full, Pae. I was so nervous about you meeting my cousin and her girlfriend. I’m glad that everyone had a good time.” AJ had her wonderful smile. Paige wrapped her arms around AJ’s neck, pulling her in close. 

“Thank you for today.” Paige whispered to AJ, closing the gap between her and AJ.

Closing her eyes, Paige saw the colors and the music were piercing her ears. She felt AJ wrap her arms around her, pulling into her closer. The two pulled away and laughed, Paige whispered. “It’s my turn to plan out a date.”

“We have all break..” AJ beamed, her eyes filled with love.

Paige was excited, she finished planning her next date with AJ. Her mom was going on a getaway with Coach Murray for the weekend and she allowed AJ to stay a night for their date. The doorbell rang and Paige frantically made sure everything was in place. 

Opening the door, Paige smiled widely and let AJ in. “I brought some pizzas.” AJ held up two boxes and had her track gym bag on her shoulder. Paige led AJ to the dining table with two easels, canvas, paintbrushes, and various paints. She also had her laptop out and video of Bob Ross on the screen. 

“Oh paint night?” AJ looked over to her in excitement. 

Paige nodded her head,”Dillon and Stacey gifted me some wine.” The two sat down and Paige opened the bottle, pouring the drink into wine glasses. AJ opened the boxes of pizza for them to eat. Paige grabbed a slice, AJ followed suit. She raised her glass to her girlfriend, “To Bob Ross.” 

“Bob Ross.”

While Paige was eating, she felt AJ put a napkin on against her cheek and wiped something off her cheek. "You had some sauce." AJ told her and took a sip of wine. After eating, Paige and AJ started to follow the Bob Ross tutorial. They laughed along the happy trees and the happy accidents. Paige asked her girlfriend,”So Bae-J, I wanted to ask about your tattoo?” She was always wondered about AJ’s tattoo on her bicep.

It was a playing card, the suit of hearts, but the middle was a lone hole.

“I got it as an impulse tattoo on Friday the 13th, it reminded me how I was the jack of all trades, master of none.” AJ confessed to Paige, “This is first time sharing the story about it.” Paige’s heart fluttered,”Thank you for sharing with me, baby.” They were finishing up the Bob Ross tutorial and AJ wanted to share their work to each other. 

“On the count of three,” Paige told her. 

“One.” 

“Two.” 

“Three.”

Revealing their paintings, Paige’s jaw drop in surprise. 

AJ painted a portrait of her. 

It was her and painted with her favorite colors, shades of yellow and teal. 

Paige felt disappointed, she actually followed the great Bob Ross. “Pae, you did great! I love your happy trees!” AJ kissed her cheek. Paige gave her a small smile, AJ smiled widely and kissed her on the lips. Kissing back, Paige felt better. 

Pulling away, Paige had an idea. 

“I had another idea, if you would want to try painting my back…” Paige said in a small voice, “or we hardcore make out.” She Googled date ideas and thought it was a good idea to take turns painting on each other, it would be intimate and special. AJ blushed furiously, ears turning red. “That is a hard bargain-“

“We can just watch a mov-“ Paige was cut off. 

“We can hardcore make out,” AJ announced, grabbing her hand. 

“Lead the way, Paige Evans.” AJ smiled and kissing her on the lips. Paige pulled away, she was still holding onto AJ's hand and leading her into her room.

“Paige, look at me.” 

AJ said in a low tone and Paige let out a shaky breath. 

“You can do it, look at me.”

 She finally opened her eyes and she was looking directly at AJ, who was holding both of her hands. Her girlfriend was teaching her how to skateboard again, Paige hoped that she didn’t fall or break any bones. 

“Don’t worry, I’ll spot you.” AJ reassured her. 

“Oh shit,” Paige told her, she was scared shitless. 

AJ continued to hold onto her hands, making sure she doesn’t fall. “You got this, bend your knees.” Paige was looking right at AJ, she started to the colors again. It reminded her when she started to like AJ and came across her girlfriend’s sketchbook. 

AJ was smiling at her, where Paige felt her breath hitch. 

She loved AJ’s smile.

“AJ Campos, you are so beautiful when you smile,” Paige said to herself. She felt a pair of lips on her own, Paige kissed AJ back sweetly. 

“Paige Evans, you always have my heart fluttering.” AJ smiled brightly, “Did you want me to let go to try to skateboarding on your own?” Paige shook her head, “I’m scared of falling!” AJ let out a small laugh, “You have my helmet and all the knee pads, gloves that I found for you.” Paige was wearing AJ’s old helmet covered with stickers and scuffed up knee pads. 

She looked at her orange Converse shoes and her mismatched socks that were teal and yellow. 

“I got you, Pae.” AJ reassured her. 

Paige nodded her head and carefully went back on the board, hold onto AJ’s hands.

Paige was starting to get a hang of it, she just needed help with stopping. AJ had to show her a few times, which led to AJ to fall off her own skateboard. Stopping her own skateboard, Paige jumped off and AJ was clutching to her knee. 

“Bae-J, are you okay?” Paige kneeled beside AJ, putting a soft hand on her back. AJ gritted her teeth at her skinned knee,”It usually happens, I haven’t tripped in a long time. I have a first aid kit in my backpack.” Paige rushed to AJ’s backpack and found the first aid kit. Paige grabbed it fast and kneeled in front of AJ.

Paige took out a hydrogen peroxide wipe and a bandaid,”This might sting.” AJ was ready for the pain and let out a hiss when Paige wiped the wound clean. She started to put ointment and then finally put on the bandaid. Paige awkwardly kissed her fingers, where AJ looked at her confusion. She kissed the AJ’s bandaid. 

“You are so cute, Pae.” AJ was flustered,” Do you want to go by my house?” 

She nodded her head, feeling nervous. 

..

They left the skateboards near a shoe rack at the front door, it was the first time AJ invited her to her home. AJ told her to take off her shoes and grab a pair of It was quite homey, she looked at childhood photos of AJ and Gabby along with having religious portraits on the wall. Paige noticed a similar photo of a recent picture of AJ and an older woman, who she assumed being AJ’s grandmother. 

“That’s my abuela.” AJ announced, which made Paige turn around. 

“We’re pretty close, she’s one of the main reasons to pursue art.” AJ wrapped her arms around Paige from behind. Paige felt AJ resting her chin on her shoulder, “That’s sweet, Bae-J.” Paige smiled and looked back the at photo.

AJ’s room was interesting. 

From track and field trophies, to shelves filled with books, Paige was surprised when she saw a keyboard and guitar in the corner. Paige sat on AJ’s queen bed covered by galaxy themed comforter, she grabbed a cute sun plushie with a smiley face. “Play me something?” Paige asked AJ bravely. 

“I might be a rusty…” AJ rubbed the back of her neck and flashed her a nervous smile. 

“I didn’t know you played instruments,” Paige mentioned, lips in a thin line. Her girlfriend, was still the mysterious, leather jacket wearing, AJ Campos. “My abuela wanted me to play piano and my mom supported me to continue music, but my dad…he wanted me to run track and focus on school.” AJ looked at her. 

“Thank you for sharing that with me, AJ.” Paige smiled and kissed AJ’s dimpled cheek. She loved learning more about AJ. AJ sat at the keyboard bench and took seat, she it turned on and took out an opened a faded yellow folder. 

She saw AJ take a deep breath and placed her fingers on the keys, AJ started to sing:

When AJ finished the song, Paige didn’t realize tears were streaming down her face. She watched how AJ got up, sat next to her, and wiped the tears away. “Was it that bad?” AJ joked with a small laugh. “The song is beautiful, you wrote that?” Paige asked her and pulled her into an embrace. 

“I wrote it last year, took me a few months to compose and find the right words.” AJ caressed her back. “You were for the first person to hear the song.” She confessed. Paige snuggled deeper in AJ’s arms, where AJ laid her down gently on her bed. 

Paige felt home, home in AJ’s arms. 

Chapter Text

Paige was browsing her shared Spotify account with Dillon and she was considering to listen to Phoebe Bridgers again, she thought about her girlfriend, AJ, and her choice of music. She noticed that had different music preferences and was curious about her playlists when they were in driving in the car. 

She typed “AJ Campos” in hopes to find her girlfriend’s Spotify profile. Paige let out a groan, there was 34,000 AJ Campos who have a Spotify profile. She hit her head, she forgot AJ’s initials. 

Maybe she used her full name. 

Paige bit her lip, to text her girlfriend or to go through every AJ Campos profile. Glancing at her clock, Paige sighed. It was only 10:30pm. 

She was determined to find AJ’s profile. 

..

Her iPhone started to vibrate and her alarm waking her up, Paige scrambled up in her bed. She fell asleep and wasn’t able to find AJ’s profile. Paige let out a groan, ”Shit.” She started to change her clothes and made her way to the kitchen. 

Paige let out a gasp, AJ was helping her mother cook breakfast for the three of them. 

“Look who’s up!” Her mother smirked slightly and continued to prepare breakfast with AJ. AJ smiled at her,”You probably forgot we had a hike today.” Paige looked down and was flustered,”I might have stayed up late last night.” 

“And what you were doing, Paige?” Her mother gave her a plate of eggs and bacon. Paige could feel AJ’s eyes on hers. 

“I was trying to find a Spotify playlist…” Paige muttered and grabbed her plate. 

AJ joined her at the table, “I can help you find it after our hike.”

Paige nodded her head, taking a bite of her strip of bacon. 

..

Letting out a yawn, Paige held onto AJ’s hand during their morning hike. “So what was the playlist you were looking for?” AJ glanced at her and rubbed AJ’s hand. Paige let out a nervous laugh,”I was trying to find your Spotify profile actually.” 

“You could have just asked me, Pae!” AJ announced, wrapping an arm around Paige. She wrapped her arms around AJ, feeling embarrassed. 

“Luckily, you didn’t. I made a playlist for you.” AJ pulled up her phone and took out her headphones. She placed one earphone in her ear, AJ passed over the phone. Paige was surprised and held onto AJ, she actually made her a playlist. 

Two continued to walk on the trail and Paige placed the other earphone in AJ’s ear to listen.

They finished the playlist and the couple made it to the top of the mountain. The view of the city was absolutely breathtaking and it felt like the two of them, where the world was starting to wake up. Paige turned to AJ, carefully cupped her cheek and kissed her on the lips. 

AJ kissed her back, pulling Paige closely to her. 

Paige pulled away and pressed her forehead against her girlfriends. 

“I love you, Ana Josephine Campos.” Paige whispered. 

She felt AJ’s breath hitch, AJ was pulling away for a moment. 

“You love me?”

Paige was starting to panic, did she say the three words too soon? She started to grab her hands, but was caught off-guard about AJ kissing her back. Paige returned the kiss and was still in shock. 

“I love you too, Paige Evans.”

Paige smiled, kissing AJ on the cheek. 

She was lifted off her feet and was in AJ’s arms in a bridal carry. 

“We’re girlfriends!” AJ yelled out loud. Paige looked at AJ, who was looking at her with heart eyes. Kissing her again shortly, Paige yelled out to the city, “We’re girlfriends!” 

Chapter Text

Paige got an invite from Stacey for her summer kick-off party, she knew that AJ and Gabby would be invited. She wondered if Ellie and Aster were invited to the festivities. She decided to wear a yellow body-con dress with blue stripes. Paige heard a car honk, she knew that Dillion was outside. Paige put on her orange high top Converse and bid goodbye to her mom. 

Opening the car door, Paige entered the Prius. “You ready for tonight?” He was munching on a bag of Cheetos. Paige shrugged,”I guess…I’m kinda nervous, because it’s my first party having a partner and also her cousins might be there.” 

“You’ll be fine, Paige. Even before you became girlfriends, AJ still told you to drink some gatorade.” 

Dillion did made a good point. 

Paige was hoping for the best. 

..

The party was already in full swing. She entered the kitchen with Dillion and was greeted by the half of the track team. Paige locked eyes with AJ, her girlfriend smiled at her and motioned to be next to her. AJ was wearing a blue top with yellow stripes, jeans, and her hair was in a bun, the rest of her hair was down. 

“Hey Pae.” AJ greeted her and kissed her cheek. 

Paige started to blush, hearing hollers and cheers from everyone in the kitchen. 

“BaeJ,” AJ smiled widely and held onto AJ’s hand. 

She started to greet Stacey, Gabby, Aya and made her way to greet Ellie and Aster. Her girlfriend’s cousin smiled at her, wrapping her arm around her own girlfriend’s waist. “Attention everyone, now the PaeJ couple is here. We need to take a shot!” Dillion announced. 

“A shot?” Paige exclaimed, looking over to AJ. 

“Paige, the party is for you and AJ! We are going to have a great summer!” Stacey announced, “Someone pour the shots.” Shots of tequila were passed around, eventually Paige had one in her hands. She was also given mango juice for chase. 

“To AJ and Paige!” Dillion raised his red Solo cup.

“AJ and Paige!” Everyone cheered and clinked their shots. Paige clinked her cup with AJ, she noticed Ellie and Aster raising their cups in their direction. Taking the shot, Paige swallowed it and drank the mango juice. AJ was done drinking the shot and winced a little bit.

AJ and Paige danced for a little bit, took a few more shots together. AJ was pulled in playing Settlers of Catan by Ellie. Paige was now hanging out with Aster, she was still intimidated by her. There was an awkward silence between the two. 

“I’m very interested to see your art, Aster.” Paige was babysitting her jungle juice. She saw how Aster’s eyes lit up,”I have a pictures on my phone, let me show you.” Aster stood next to her and opened her phone gallery. 

“This is the flower I painted when I knew Ellie was actually Paul about her mentioning bold paint strokes.’ Aster explained. She also swiped to show a sketch of Ellie and mural, a golden woman reaching out to a star. “The mural means a lot to me, Ellie made me bold to vandalize the wall.”

“It’s beautiful.” Paige smiled at her. 

Paige showed her the mural of moments with AJ, when she first came out to her mother, and when she told Dillion that was queer. They started to talk about their favorite artists and music, then Paige mentioned,”Art must run in your family.”

“Also running,” Aster let out a laugh, making a reference about AJ and Gabby being on the track team. 

..

Hearing loud cheers upstairs, Paige looked at Aster. “We should look for our girlfriends.”  

“Agreed.” Aster nodded her head. They headed up the stairs and found their girlfriends playing a board game. AJ was next to Ellie, the two were playing with Aya and Chantal. 

“I will trade you wheat for rye.” AJ announced to Ellie. Ellie let out a small smirk, “Tequila it is.” She started pouring the shot for AJ. Paige glanced over to Asters,”They are playing Drinkers of Catan, t’s like Settlers, but just, when you when you cross a fairway, you take three shots and you just keep going.”

Paige glanced at her girlfriend, AJ was clearly drunk along with Ellie. 

“Do you know sheep are emotionally complex and experience a wide range of emotions?” AJ drunkenly announced and laughed to herself. All eyes were on AJ and it was awkward. 

“Ajax is definitely rubbing off of you, Paige.” Aster laughed at her cousin. “We should stop them,” Paige looked concerned. She followed Aster to get her girlfriend.”
