It was the second I laid eyes on her (Too bad it was from a world away)

Work Text:

Annette walked out of her house and went over to the palace to see her parents. She was an angel and today was the coronation of the next group of guardian angels. This happened for every new generation of angels, and it was a very special day for all of the citizens of this dimension.

“Welcome to all of you gathered here today,” The high angel spoke. “Today is a very special one, as I am sure that you all know. Today is the day that we crown our new generation of guardian angels. All of these young candidates have been put forward by themselves and know what the job entails. But just to remind you all I shall go over the 3 rules:

Rule number 1: No going down to earth without having a case assigned.

Rule number 2: No stealing others cases (Yes this has happened). And finally.

Rule number 3: No falling in love with the people you have been assigned to.”

Before the high angel continued, she turned to her guards and pointed to a few of the angels in the crowd. There were so many there that no one knew who she was pointing to, so they all just looked around aimlessly trying to find out who it was.

The high angel continued her speech. “Remember why you all wanted to become guardian angels. Remember that you are not only representing yourself, but also the generations before yourselves and your families. As guardian angels you must all take your jobs up with an utmost sense of pride and responsibility. It is not a role that should be taken on a whim,”

“Though I doubt that any of the young ones here today would have done so. The interviews shall be conducted shortly after I am finished speaking and as a trial everyone shall be assigned to their own human to watch over and protect. As well as giving substantial consequences to them when they wrong others. If you cannot handle this, please leave the selection now. No one. And I mean no one should go forward if they believe they would not be able to handle this role,”

“Self-doubt will be your downfall. I can say that from experience. Believing in your abilities is something all of you need in order to do your job to the best of your ability and while I believe that all of you have the capabilities. You all need to have that same confidence in yourselves.”

The high angel finished speaking and a few angels left the crowd as they didn’t believe that they would be able to handle the role. Annette stood firm and promised herself that no matter what, she would not move. She would stay and fulfil the guardian angel role to the best of her ability in her trial.

Her family was counting on her and she didn’t want to let them down. She was the first and only angel from her family to ever even consider becoming a guardian angel because of how much work was involved in becoming one and just keeping the position.
They were tested ever so often to see if they could still handle the pressure. These tests were completely at random, and no one knew when you were going to be tested. It was this part of the job that put most off. The majority of angels could not handle the level of pressure and even if they believed that they were able to, they would most likely drop the job within the first few months.

They would crack under the pressure of the tests and be deemed unable to keep their job, so they would be sent back to the regular village to live out the rest of their eternity until the next selection took place.

Annette and the others were led into the palace and down the twisting hallways into a room with what seemed like mountains upon mountains of files and scrolls. “Do not touch anything.” The guard ordered. “These scrolls hold extremely important information and if tampered with could become very dangerous.”

They walked through the room until at the back there was a small filing cabinet. Each person in line was given a scroll out of it with the human that they had to protect for the next 2 months and after this, they would be judged to see if they were worthy of being a guardian angel.

Annette and the others were allowed to go home after this and read through the scroll they had been given to try and get to know some more about the people they had been assigned to.

“Dalia Rogers. 17.” Annette read as she unrolled the scroll in her bedroom to read through it. “Hm, she seems nice enough,” Annette said aloud to herself as she read through the file. “I mean even after what she’s been through,” She spoke again, looking at Dalia’s file and noticing her dark past. “Damn, she hasn’t had it easy.” She spoke again, but this time quietly to herself so nobody could hear.

Annette finished reading the file. A picture of her person was at the bottom. She let out a small gasp. “Oh god,” She thought to herself “She’s so pretty.” Annette could feel herself start to blush and go into a dazed, trance-like state. She quickly shook herself out of it and reminded herself of the rules. She wasn’t allowed to fall in love. Especially not with a girl.

It was something her family had always reminded her of and she had promised to adhere to it from the moment that she was old enough to even slightly grasp the concept of love. Her family and the majority of the people where she was from didn’t believe that men and men could love, or a woman with another woman.

They definitely wouldn’t want her falling in love with a girl. Especially with the case she had been assigned to, and, to make matters worse, she’d be breaking the rules. She sat down on her bed familiarising herself with the case and who she was going to be looking out for.

She was going to be going to the portal room tomorrow to go down to earth to get to speak with her person. She was afraid and excited at the same time. A strange combination of emotions. One she herself had never felt. It was so bizarre. She didn’t know how to handle these emotions. She was always told to push her emotions to the side, she never listened because she didn’t want to adhere to the standards that were put on them.

The next day, she woke up and went to the castle. “Name and your reasoning for being here.” The guard asked. “Annette Warren. And I’m here for access to the portal room for the guardian angel training.” The guard looked her up and down. “Right this way, miss.” The guard said before leading her into a dark room with one lit up portal. “Just in here at that lit portal Miss Annette.” He said before leaving the room and closing the door.

Annette walked up to the portal and held up the scroll. She could see the girl walking through a park. The autumn leaves falling and the ducks paddling around in the lake. Couples sitting on the benches in each other's arms. Annette watched the Dalias surroundings and falling for a girl she had never even met.

She sighed to herself. “She just seems so perfect. I wish that I could be with her.” She shook herself. “No. I can’t.” She told herself. She swore to abide by the rules and that was the way that it has been and always will be.

Annette walks away from the portal as she wipes away the few small tears forming at the corner of her eyes. She knew that she could never love her, but it still broke her heart. Nobody understood. Nobody knew what it was like to feel how she felt. As she walked out of the room she felt as if a piece of herself had been lost. That there was now a hole, a void in her heart that will never be filled.
