Chapter Text
Now that Amity and Luz were dating, Luz was revved up for Valentines Day. They found out from Willow that there is an equivalent here in “Heart Swap Day.” It’s similar to Valentine's, but Witches give small, real hearts instead. Some are from Demons, some are from Faeries.
Luz chuckled nervously. “So a nice card and chocolate can’t cover it?”
“Nope. Luckily, Faeries are pretty easy to kill. It’s not as sad as it sounds. But that’s not all we do.”
Liz tilted her head. “What do you mean, Wills?”
Willow smiled, giggling. “You’ll see.”
That evening, after obtaining a Faerie heart, Luz texted Amity. “I have a Heart to Swap, my awesome girlfriend.” Amity was nervous, but ecstatic. “Who told you about Heart Swap Day? Willow? I’m getting all nervous. Let’s meet outside the Owl House.”
A few minutes later, Luz met Amity in the woods, both with Hearts in their hands. Amity chuckled. “Hey, Luz. I got a Giant’s Heart for you.”
Luz frowned. “Does the size or creature of origin have significance?”
Amity shook her head, placing a gentle hand on Luz’s shoulder. “No, so don’t get discouraged. It used to be a tradition for a different thing, but now it’s just like Valentine’s day.”
Luz nodded and handed her the Faerie Heart. Amity blushed and put it in a clear, clean jar. Ironically, the Giant’s Heart was smaller than expected. Amity presented it and put it in a jar after Luz got a bit grossed out holding it. They got discouraged again at showing negatively at holding the Giant’s Heart. Amity understood it, and knew Luz wasn’t grossed out at the entire thing. After putting the jars in little draw-string pouches, Amity started getting flustered.
“Are you ok, Amity?”
Amity nodded quickly. “Yes. It’s just that…When Heart Swap Day first started, the two lovers,” they both blushed at the word, “would cast a spell to swap their Hearts. That part of the tradition still stands today. Although, it’s never been used on a Human. First time for everything, right?”
Luz nodded. “This must be what Willow was talking about. I must really be oblivious. It’s in the name, for God’s sake.” They chuckled. “Well. Let’s try it out.”
Amity nodded. She grabbed one of Luz’s hands and put it to her own heart, and did the same for herself. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “May the destined Hearts never depart.”
Both Luz and Amity felt a big, strong heartbeat, then a lightness in their entire bodies. The arm’s on each other’s hearts began matching pulses, veins glowing a soft red. They could hear not their own heartbeat, but each other's in their ears. Amity began sweating a bit. “Are you ok, princesa?” Amity nodded. “I’m fine, it’s just a new spell for me.” When Amity opened her eyes, her irises were pink. She smiled. “Hey, your eyes changed, Luz.” Luz smiled back. “So have yours.”
Amity concentrated more on the spell, the glow on their arms getting brighter. Both Amity and Luz’s hearts started beating faster and faster, their bodies heating up. Then, when they thought they would pass out, the heat dissipated and their heartbeats were normal again. They breathed heavily and looked at each other, then blushed. Amity cleared her throat. “I’ve never done any of this before. So I don’t know what the effects will be. No one was really clear on it when they recorded the tradition. Well, not at least on the papers the tradition was recorded on. That part was burnt, along with what the original tradition was. I guess we’ll just see what happens.” Luz nodded and hugged Amity close. Both their hearts pounded hard once, and they both felt two heartbeats and not one. Amity took a mental note of it as she said goodbye to Luz and left.
The next few days, however, would prove challenging.
