- Snape realizes pretty soon after Lily tells him she’s uncomfortable with the Slytherin bullies and him being friends that he’s been an ass to muggleborns and that he can’t claim to care about Lily if he’s actively targeting people like her
- he doesn’t do anything about it at first. Still believing the Slytherin bullies are right in their views.
- after James’s attack and him calling Lily a mudblood he realizes he screwed up massively.
- So he changes. He apologizes to the muggleborns he targeted. Even standing up for them against some of his housemates.
- He shows Lily he’s different and the two eventually fix their friendship.
- it’s not a quick fix by any means and Lily was angry with him for a year or so.
- when Lily decided to speak with Severus again he was very surprised by it.
- the beginning was rough and wasn’t helped much by James being around to try and flirt with Lily. Or Lily’s much more accepting views to the flirting.
- James, at lily’s insistence, didn’t bully Severus anymore but that didn’t stop him and Sirius from occasional taunts. Which Lily was annoyed about when she found out. But she figured if the maunders all taunted each other some taunts towards Severus weren’t the end of the world.
- when Lily and James first started going out Severus was angry and sad at first.
- then he realized James actually made Lily happy and that her being happy was more important to him than her being with him.
- the relationship between James and Severus is never really a warm one. But they both accept each other as people who Lily cares about and people that will be in each other’s lives
- Sirius is always a little more persistent with his taunts towards Severus than James is. But he’s not hostile
- when James first meets Petunia and Vernon and the aftermath there Severus is very highly amused. Both by james’ mishaps and then the Dursley’s reactions.he can’t decide who he wants to laugh at more.
- During James and Lily’s wedding he’s present but not in the wedding party. Which he was mildly annoyed about at first before he realized only Sirius had any part in the wedding and that it was as small as possible and Lily had still invited him.
- When Lily tells him she’s pregnant he’s happy for her. As the years had gone by he had fallen out of love with Lily and he was just glad he could be there for his friend.
- during the pregancy he did take more joy than he should have when he found out James had triggered Lily’s pregancy rage and she had come over to his house for junk food and ranting about “stupid potter knocked me up and thinks he can offer me regular chocolate and not the good stuff?”
- this is one of the few times Sirius and Severus actually talk without being rude to each other. Severus tells Sirius how James messed up and Sirius teases him about it.
- severus relationship with Remus and Peter are better than James or Sirius, though he’s still not their biggest fan.
- without Severus telling Voldy about the prophecy he never targets the potters, Peter is never manipulated by Voldy to give up the potters and while the wizard war continues James and Lily are safer than they would have been.
- severus visits the house just as often as the other three Marauders do and the four of them become like uncles to Harry.
- seriously that child is spoiled rotten by everyone but his parents.
- the end to the wizarding war takes longer than it would have if the potters had died but eventually the horocruxs are discovered, tracked down and destroyed.
