Chapter 1: A Letter to Myself

Summary:

Enkidu wrote a letter to himself to read once he loses his memories. There's a lot to explain to my poor lost son!

Chapter Text

Enkidu,

I should introduce myself. I am Enkidu, or, well, you. I’m writing this letter to myself because you’ve been through so much. So much that you don’t remember and I truly wish you did. Unfortunately, the past can’t be changed, so here we are.

This is such a strange letter to write. I don’t know how much you know or remember about yourself. Do you know why you can’t remember certain people or events? Do you even want to know who you are and what you’re missing? If so, please continue reading and seek out the people and resources I mention in this letter.

Your biggest question is probably why? Why don’t you remember everything you should? I imagine you remember your time in the Underworld. It was a dark time, but know that you’re alive now. You found a way out, but it did come with a price. You know that amulet you wear? Please never take that off. It keeps you alive, though it’s also why we’re in this mess. It keeps you alive at the cost of eating your precious memories. This will happen every seven years unless Oz can find a way to tether you to the world of living with alchemy. I’m sad to say that he wasn’t able to find a solution in time, but I was prepared for that.

I’ve journaled what I believe to be your most precious memories in various notebooks. You’ve lived quite the meaningful life, Enkidu, and you hold so much dear to you that it took a long time to complete. I’ve left these journals with people you trust. Please seek them out if and when you feel ready to read them. In your nightstand drawer is the journal of your time in the modern world at the school. In it will be information and memories of your time with your friends and teachers. If you read anything, this is the most important one. There’s people that need you Enkidu. People that would love for you to remember, if possible.

The librarian, Proctor, has the one about your time in the Underworld. He’s also your Dad - one of them, you have three. Anyway, believe it or not, you do have memories about your time in the Underworld that were important and likely lost. You probably forgot your home, and what happened to its people while you worked for Ereshkigal. Some of that will be in that journal. You also met Proctor during this time, so that’s why you left this journal with him.

The last one is the longest - and was the hardest to write. It’s the one that I grieve the most. I do regret that you forget about your friends and boyfriend, but they are all still around you. They’re alive. Even if you can’t remember them, you can make new memories with them. The last journal is of your time in your home, in Uruk.

I doubt that you remember anything about Uruk or Gilgamesh. They were your life, your world before you died. You had so many adventures with Gilgamesh. You learned. You loved. You lost. Much of who you are is because of your time in Uruk. I hope that you decide to read this one….but I will understand if you don’t. These are memories that you will never recover. Everyone is gone from that life…You’re the only one alive that still holds it so dear. It will be a painful read and it will make you sad. I’ve cried numerous times just writing it. I’ve left this notebook with Dio in case you ever decide to read it.

Oh, I almost forgot, about the journal in your drawer, guard that one well. Of course, guard all of them, but Dio and Proctor are extremely powerful. Your memories are safe with them.

The choice is up to you, but if you do decide to dive into your past, please leave the journals with the people you left them with. These journals are too important to risk losing. There’s a lot of people I don’t trust at the school. Thankfully, I’ve given everyone you do trust a paper flower or another item that’s important to you. If you ever have any doubts, ask to see it. You should recognize it when you see it. Don’t ask, it’s just a feeling.

I do hope that Oz finds a way to free you of the amulet. I don’t want you to have to go through this again in seven years. Hold onto this letter though, just in case. Protect it with your life. Protect your memories, Enkidu. Even if you decide not to seek al of them out. One day, you might change your mind.

I’m so sorry this has happened to you,

I wish you luck - and remember to follow your heart.

Stay Strong,

Enkidu
