Work Text:

Yeonjun watched on in equal parts awe and horror as Taehyun leaned closer to an unphased Hueningkai on the couch.

“If you’re a doctor you must not have a boyfriend, ‘cause you’re busy.”

Hueningkai smiled softly, looking every part the demure female lead. “You must not have a girlfriend if you’re a soldier, because it’s tough.”

Taehyun blinked, incredulous, “Who’s gonna answer?”

“AND CUT!” the director called, delighted. “That was excellent boys!”

Taehyun and Hueningkai smiled broadly as everyone else on set whooped and applauded them.

“Let’s try that again from a few different angles but please keep this delivery. You’re naturals!”

The cheers died down into an excited murmur as everyone got back to their positions and the director walked over to the other three members.

“You guys can take five while we finish up here. Yeonjun, Soobin please be ready to film your scene when you get back. The pressure’s on after that!”

Yeonjun bowed his head in assent, smiling weakly at the joke while determinedly ignoring Beomgyu’s excited “ooooOOOOH!” that was directed their way.

A tug on his sleeve had him turn to Soobin who was holding up two scripts for him to see. “Shall we?”

Yeonjun gulped and nodded.

It’s okay, Yeonjun told himself as he followed the other back to the dressing room. It’s totally okay, he affirmed when Soobin closed the door after them. It’s a two minute sketch, how hard could it be?

The answer was very.

“Hyung, how is this so difficult?” Soobin exclaimed after their fourth failed run-through. “You’ve been on a real-life drama! You have experience!”

“Not with this!” Yeonjun cried, falling dramatically back on the couch. “Not with, you know, a love scene.”

Silence.

“I MEAN A CONFESSION SCENE!” Yeonjun shouted, sitting back up with a wild expression.

Soobin’s cheeks reddened but he mercifully decided to ignore Yeonjun’s utter failure at being cool and casual about this.

“This is all your fault by the way.” Soobin noted, pouting down at the script.

Yeonjun turned sharply, embarrassment forgotten in favour of offence. “My fault? How is this MY fault?”

“If you hadn’t flirted infront of the maknaes at every given opportunity for the past five years they wouldn’t be so good at this!”

“So it’s my fault for teaching them essential life skills?”

“HOW ESSENTIAL CAN THEY BE WHEN YOU CAN’T USE THEM NOW?”

“I’M NOT THE ONE FLIRTING, YOU ARE! YOU KNOW I’M NOT GOOD AT ACCEPTING THINGS LIKE THIS!”

“Woah, you guys really need to chill”

Yeonjun and Soobin screamed, turning to see Beomgyu watching them with wide eyes from the doorway. He slowly raised his hands and backed away. “The director’s ready whenever you are… weirdos.”

With the last word Beomgyu ran away cackling, leaving Soobin and Yeonjun exasperated but at least no longer shouting.

Soobin got up first and headed towards the door. “We’ve got this, hyung.” he said turning back with a grin, “As long as you don’t succumb to my charms.”

Yeonjun rolled his eyes, “Bring it on, brat.”

With the tension between them lifted, filming went on smoothly. It was a fun day, with the boys heading home at the end of it feeling content and more confident in the success of their comeback show. After a quick dinner together, the group parted ways for the evening with Yeonjun heading back to his room. Within a minute of him settling down in bed, however, he heard a quiet knock that could only belong to one person.

“Hey.” Soobin greeted, as though the two of them hadn’t just said goodnight.

“Hey.” Yeonjun replied, letting him into his room and closing the door again quietly.

“That wasn’t so bad earlier, huh?” Soobin asked shyly, his dimples standing out even in the low light.

“No it wasn’t.” Yeonjun smiled back. “All thanks to you. I mean, I still couldn’t get through the last minute without breaking.”

“Well it’s not like that was the original direction.” Soobin pointed out. “Holding the position we did is probably more awkward than the real thing.”

Yeonjun huffed out a laugh, “You wanna bet?”

“Okay.”

Yeonjun inhaled sharply, not believing his ears. “What?”

Soobin took a slow yet sure step towards him, a look of determination settling on his face.
“You’re not just a friend. You’re a special friend.”

Yeonjun had heard Soobin say the same line a hundred times earlier on, but never with this level of sincerity.

“Soobin.” he whispered, vulnerability seeping through his shock.

There was no space between them now as Soobin raised his hands to hold the other’s face. They stared at each other for a minute, Yeonjun vaguely wondering why Soobin stopped before realising that he was waiting for a sign. With a quick flick of his tongue, Yeonjun wet his lips and nodded.

He had a second to register the clear relief that flooded Soobin’s expression before the younger dove in, kissing him with an intensity that Yeonjun had only dreamt of before.

Yeonjun let Soobin crowd him against the wall as he melted into his embrace. His hands rose to Soobin’s shoulders, pulling him in closer despite Soobin showing no sign of wanting to break free. Yeonjun felt desperate, like a teenager all over again as he opened his mouth and brought the other into a deeper kiss. The moan Soobin let out as their tongues met had Yeonjun arching into him, whining without words for more.

He didn’t want this to end, a small fear ringing in the back of his head that this would be over once they parted for air. When that moment came, however, one look into Soobin’s eyes told him that this wasn’t the end. He wasn’t alone in his feelings.

All of the doubts Yeonjun ever had over the years about Soobin left him with a short, incredulous laugh. Soobin joined in, smiling widely before kissing him again and again, the two sharing and then repeating confessions with every breath.

When they eventually went to bed with a whispered “Goodnight, chubs” and a secret smile, Yeonjun knew that this was only the start of something incredible.
