But I stand in California with my toes in the sand

Notes:

This was supposed to be a whole story with chapters but I changed my mind cuz I still have many wips so I turned it into a oneshot instead. The idea was very inspired by the song Sweater Weather.

Work Text:

Patton snaps a picture of a seagull that had landed on the sand with a piece of bagel in its beak, he had no clue where the seagull had found it (or took it perhaps) but he found it silly and quite adorable. He smiles at the picture he took and hid it inside his bag so that he can put it on his scrapbook when he gets home.

Unfortunately, Logan, his brother, didn't join him since he had to watch over his five-year old son who was sick. And also to watch over his very own book store. His nephew would have loved running around the sandy California beach.

Speaking of stores, Patton's bakery wasn't closed since his best friend/employee was there to manage it for him while Patton was gone.

He looks around the surroundings with a soft smile on his face, watching the children run around and teens happily playing volleyball. Patton sighs as he continues to look around, until someone had caught his eye. A man the same age as Patton with dirty blonde hair, walked by while holding his sun hat still and a glass of piña colada in his other hand. Patton immediately took a picture of said man, finding the scenery magnificent. A smile slowly crept up to his face.

"Did you just took a picture of me?"

Patton quickly looked up from his Polaroid camera and noticed that the blond man was walking closer towards him. His face turned pink in embarrassment, apologizing to the other. "I-I'm sorry if I took a picture of you without your permission.".

The blond only shrugged it off as he now sat down beside Patton while also taking a small sip from his drink. "Don't worry about it, I don't mind,". His eyes narrowed at Patton slightly, "Unless you're some kind of stalker.".

Patton's eyes widened as he raised his hands in defense, he squeaked, "I'm not stalker!". The blond chuckles at his reaction, patting gently on his shoulder. "I'm just messing with you.". The camera-clad man blinked his eyes for a few times before bursting into giggles.

"So, are you a photographer?"Asked by the sun hat wearing blond.

Patton shook his head in response to his question, "Nope, I just like taking pictures with my camera when I go to nice places. It's a lil hobby of mine.". The blond merely nodded in understanding as he continued to listen to Patton talk.

"Do you want the picture?..."

"Oh, no, you can keep it."

The two had gone to a comfortable silence. Patton was staring at the blond man with wonder in his eyes while the other was busy looking at the ocean as he drank his piña colada.

"Janus. My name's Janus."

Patton was quite surprised at that when the blond, Janus, said his name right off the bat just like that.

"I'm Patton. It's nice to meet you, Janus!"Patton exclaimed happily as he stuck his hand out for Janus. Janus gave him sly smile before shaking his hand, "It's also nice to meet you too, Patton.".

"The whole kitchen was a mess because of our attempt of doing a silly experiment. We got scolded by Logan but it was fun nonetheless."Patton said between giggles, talking about the time where he and his nephew made a big mess in their kitchen and how it was the most fun thing he'd done.

Janus watched him with a smile as he walked beside him. They were heading to Patton's three-story house/bookstore/bakery after their little hangout. Both him and Patton were friends now for 3 months and well, being friends with the cheery baker was... fun.

Patton was something else and everything he does makes Janus' heart do flips and cause butterflies in his stomach. The glasses-clad baker has that comforting energy and contagious smile that Janus adores (though the blond would not dare to admit it out loud.).

"Ah, we're here now."Patton exclaimed when they stopped infront of his bakery. Janus cursed internally, not wanting this moment of them to end quickly. Patton turned to look at him, a bashful smile visible on his lips. "I guess this is goodbye for now.".

"Yeah, I guess it is-"Janus mumbled bitterly but was cut off when Patton leaned close and planted a kiss on his cheek. Patton whispered to him, "Goodbye Jan.".

"G-goodbye too, Patton."Janus stammered, still shocked from the kiss. Patton giggles softly before heading towards the door, waving at Janus then disappearing inside the shop.

Janus stood there, placing his hand on the cheek where Patton had kissed him, a dopey smile formed on his lips.

He adjusted his cream-colored bow tie in front of the mirror once again, he looked at his own reflection and grinned happily. Patton can't believe it, he's actually going on a date with Janus. He had asked out the other a few days ago and he was nervous when he did it, and luckily, Janus agreed. Patton sighs before heading downstairs to meet with Janus.

Janus stood outside the bakery feeling rather nervous and fidgety, he was nervously waiting for Patton's arrival. He was crushing at Patton for months now and it surprised him when the other man asked him out in one of their hangouts at the beach.

He was snapped out from his thoughts when he heard the door from the bakery creak, and there he saw Patton running towards him. Before he can prepare himself, Janus was tackled by Patton with the tightest hug ever, almost causing for both of them to fall.

"Janus!"Patton exclaimed excitedly as he continued to hug Janus tightly as if not letting him go. It probably took him a few seconds before pulling away from the hug, finally letting Janus breath. Janus stuttered out, panting heavily. "That- I was not ready for that.".

Patton smiled at him sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. He says with a smile, "You look really handsome tonight. I like your suit.". Janus glances at Patton, he can feel heat rush to his cheeks. He immediately put on his smooth and suave act to hide the sheer embarrassment he was feeling.

"Thank you, Patton. You look extremely lovely as well, your suit is simply gorgeous but it cannot compete with your beauty."

He purrs, grabbing Patton's hand and placing a gentle kiss on his knuckles. Patton's whole face turned red at the gesture and Janus' words.

"Jan..."

"Yes?"

"Can I kiss you?"

"Sure- wait what?-"

Before Janus could even process Patton's words, there lips suddenly met as Patton pulled him in for a kiss. He was surprised at that for a moment before eventually kissing the other back, his hands resting on Patton's waist.

Their kiss lasted for a few seconds or so, leaving them quite breathless, both of their faces as red as tomatoes.

Janus cleared his throat as he tried to cover his embarrassment but it was no use. "That was, well, surprising.". Patton fidgeted with his hands as he looked down at the ground, he had gone quite bashful after doing such a bold move.

He looked up and stared at Janus shyly, a clear blush spread across his face. "Do you like me in a romantic way, Jan?". Janus rolls his eyes before nodding, gently cupping his cheeks. "No, I don't- Of course I do, Patton. That's why I agreed to go on a date with you.". The glasses-clad man grins at him as he leans into the touch.

"Speaking of the date, do you still want to go to the restaurant? It would be such a waste if we didn't because I wore this specific suit just for this."Janus stated, looking down at his black and yellow suit. Patton giggled before hugging the other once more, "I do really want to go there.".

"Alright then and we have to hurry if we don't want to be late."

"Yeah you're right, Jan."
