In one word? Unfair. In two words? REALLY unfair. Of course, things were hardly going smoothly before all of that had started. The war with Nega, the pan-zonal lockdown, and most recently, the breakout. And on top of all that, Zobotnik kept on breathing down his back about Scourge’s escape.
Zonic was monitoring the Prime Zone one day in his monitor room, as the reports were getting increasingly alarming, especially on the Eggman side of things. He’d glance at the smaller screens off to the side from time to time, but the not-so-good doctor was who he was focusing his attention on the most. He was planning to rewrite reality with some sort of “Genesis Wave,” and had apparently done so before. However, that was rewritten by Sonic Prime, so the others were confident in Sonic’s ability to do so again if the need arose. But Zonic wasn’t convinced. What had happened to all the days of old, when he went to call on Prime Sonic’s aid in those increasingly bizarre zones? When he had gathered every Tails he could find to stop Mammoth Mogul? Yeah, there was that whole “war with Dr. Nega” thing going on that he had even used to justify letting Scourge go before, but it still didn’t sit right with the Zone Cop to just keep on letting Sonic Prime do all the dirty work, whether that was his own zone or another. Zonic had asked permission from the higher ups multiple times to grant him permission to repay that favor, yet he was always met with a firm “not yet.” He was being sent on less and less missions, and he was starting to get sick and tired of letting things play out, he was ready to get the go ahead to interfere, and then- everything went white.
When Zonic was able to see again, he still sitting at his seat in the monitor room, except something was- different. He checked the monitors until he got to the Prime Zone, and saw- wait. Who was THAT robot? Some sort of Overlander child? Zonic pulled up the information he had, and was able to procure a name. Mega Man. Was he trying to violate the pan-zonal lockdown? Or is something much more sinister going on? Zonic dialed in Zobotnik’s ID and leaned back, letting out a puff of air he didn’t know he had.
“Permission to check the Prime future?” He asked, staring intently at the large display.
“Permission granted. What for?” Before he finished the enquiry, however, Zonic had already hung up. He allowed himself to grimace, but quickly diverted his attention back to the scene that was being shown.
“Now what do we have here? Oh- Oh no. OH NO.” A failed Super Genesis Wave, a last ditch attempt, complete eradication of the Prime Zone?! Zonic rushed out of the monitor room and into the warping facility, but not without a warning for using his superspeed from some of the other irked zone cops. He’d have to apologize for that later. Zonic donned his standard gear and raced through a warp ring he had on himself. After taking some time to gain his bearings, he could tell that he was on a space station. Sonic and Mega Man were reaching for the chaos emeralds and turning super, and- wait- since when could Mega Man harness chaos energy? Zonic made a mental note to add that to the logs- focus, Zonic! You’re here to help, not to inflate the databanks!
Theoretically, if he was a Sonic, he should be able to go super too, right? Scourge was able to, and so were some other Sonics- stop it! No time for theories! He reached into the energy barrier, and was able to grasp all of the chaos emeralds. Concentrating as hard as he could, he imagined his fur turning golden, his quills turning up, his body starting to glow, the works. And surprisingly enough, he looked down at his body, and hey- it was working! The multicolored gems swirled slowly around his body, slowly getting absorbed. It was taking a bit longer than he had anticipated, though, probably since some of their energy was used to turn the two heroes super. But before he had completed his transformation, the Super Genesis Wave started activating, and two golden streaks were flying through the starry sky, and he could hear EVERYTHING going on all at once down below! Seems like they’re charging a shot- he’d better juice, quick!
Zonic leapt out through a window, and was able to somewhat maintain his altitude as he flew a few miles away. Miraculously, Zonic did not suffocate or freeze to death. He felt warm, and it wasn’t because of his suit, even out in the depths of space. It was probably something to do with the Chaos Emeralds, but just then, the Wily Egg exploded with a resounding BOOM! His fur was singed a bit by the blast, but other than that, Zonic remained unharmed. However, the Genesis Wave was still going, and it didn’t seem like it was able to be stopped at this point. Was he too late? No, they were starting a chaos control together, forming a green ball of energy Zonic knew could be used to change reality, but- WHAT WAS EGGMAN DOING?
Before he could rethink what he was about to do, Zonic sped in front of the Wily Egg speeding towards the two heroes and put out his hands, hoping against hope he could stop it. And just as Mega Man disappeared in a flash of white, the satellite crashed into him at full force. He dug his heels back, slowly but surely pushing it away from Sonic.
“Wh- Who are you? Do I know you? Why do you look just like me?” He heard a voice behind him yell.
“No time! Hand me your chaos control, and you can handle the doctor!”
“Well- whatever you’re doing, do it quickly! The Genesis Wave is almost finished!” The other hedgehog tossed what he had been holding, and began ripping out the damaged machinery. Zonic felt the green mass clinging to him, and quickly lifting his palm up, let out a resounding “CHAOS- CONTROL!”
A loud crack sounded off in the distance, but Zonic didn’t dare look back. Please make everything go back to normal. Please make it so that the Genesis Wave never happened. Please- GO BACK! And just like the last time, everything was enveloped in a brilliant light, and just as it was almost over, he heard a faint voice.
“Wait a minute! I remember him! Is that- ZONIC?”
And then everything went light.
