Sarcasm → James Potter

Summary:

James Potter might have thought he was in love with Lily Evans but he was yet to meet Eve Brooks. The shy Ravenclaw didn"t mean to get hit by the bludger but James was glad she did, otherwise he wouldn"t have caught her and fallen in love with her emerald green eyes.

And despite his sarcastic nature, he was determined to make her fall in love with him before the year ended; In a way he never could with Lily Evans.

Chapter 1: Eve Brooks

Chapter Text

When Eve Brooks was younger, her mother told her that people turned into stars when they die. And being a five-year-old, she truly believed it. And when she'd ask where her father went, her mother would point up to stars.

"Eve Marie Brooks, you're dad loves you to the moon and back and he still will as a star,"Her mother would tell her every time she asked.

Eve stuck with the idea of the dead turning into a star even up to the age she was now; Seventeen. Because the idea of that was nicer than believing it all just ended; it was nice to know something happened, that someone was waiting for them.

Harry Brooks hadn't intended to lose his life, to leave his daughter. But being a muggle had as many dangers as wizards, especially when he was an army officer. The father would be waiting for his daughter and hopefully, it would be a while until he met her again in the stars.

Eve didn't have any siblings and her mother didn't plan on having any more kids. Eve thought it would be her and her mother forever, just the two of them. She was wrong, however, though she didn't mind too much.

When Eve was nine, four years after her father died, her mother finally remarried. She was reluctant since she had a daughter but Eve ran along with her mother's happiness more than her's. So Amanda Brooks married Michael Dale and Eve gained a step-brother and step-sister. A year after they moved in together, Eve soon found out that she loved the new additions to her family.

Kaden was two years older than Eve, he was happy to help Eve with any bullies if he needed to. Kala was around six months older than Eve and they were very close. Either way, they were like blood siblings to her even if they weren't.

Unlike her step-siblings, when Eve had unusual thing happening to her. When she wanted her Teddy and no one was around, it would float to her. Or when kids would pick on her at school for being ginger, she'd make their bottled drinks explode (or better yet, turn their hair ginger).

At eleven, Amanda wasn't happy her daughter was been stolen away for most of the year for seven-year. But she still sat down and explained to Eve that she was a witch and it wasn't the type she saw kids dress up as for Halloween.

That lead up to now, where Eve was sat in the garden. A book was perched in her hands as she sat amongst the flowers, wearing a blue hoodie with a Raven on the front that Kala went and had made for her birthday.

"Eve, you've been out there all day!"Michael called,"Aren't you hungry?"

"Not particularly,"said Eve dully.

Michael smiled sadly,"Okay, make sure you come back inside before dark."

Eve hummed in response, not unkindly.

Eve didn't speak too much, she had been rather quiet since her father died. She only spoke to people she knew and trusted. Her life was like a video game, some levels were harder than others. The Half-Blood witch had dealt with troubles of anxiety since a young age and that wasn't something magic could ever completely cure.

"Eve!"A voice squealed,"You're home!"

Eve glanced around from her spot on the grass. Her step-sister Kala was running towards her, engulfing her in a hug. Eve smiled.

"Hello Kala, I wasn't aware you were home,"said Eve.

Kala Dale was Eve's step-sister and she loved her to pieces. Kala was in University, starting her first year. She had also been in their summer course. Kala found Eve being a witch fascinating, always asking her random things.

"Oh yes!"said Kala, sitting next to her,"And when dad told me you were back, I thought I'd stay in London for a while before I moved into my new dorm."

"How was Oxford?"Eve asked, putting down her book.

"Oh it's great,"said Kala,"Oxford University is great, I can't wait to be an official student. Are you sure you don't want to go to uni?"

"Kala, I don't think Oxford have courses for witches, do you?"said Eve, amused, "You're a scientist, I'm...well I don't know yet."

Kala hummed, laying down on the flower covered grass.

"What do wizards and witches do for jobs?"

"Oh lots,"said Eve,"We have our own police, called Aurors, not my cup of tea. There's Professors too and Quidditch players...sports...all ministry jobs. Like the government."

"And you?" Kala questioned.

"I like Herbology,"said Eve, her pretty red hair blowing in the wind,"It's the study of wizards plants though."

"Ah, I see,"said Kala,"So...have you made any friends other than Raina yet? I know it's hard for you but you should try."

"Not since Lily and Remus,"Eve whispered, shamed for the way she couldn't speak with people properly,"I'm trying, K, I really am."

"I know,"said Kala, sitting up,"You've never told me much about your friends."

"Raina, Remus and Lily,"Eve replied,"Raina's amazing, the most confident person I"ve ever met. She's so sarcastic and...she's helping me try to be normal, y'know? And I"m getting somewhere."

It was true. Raina Edwards was one of the prettiest and most confident people in the school. With her smooth dark skin and black curled hair, she always attracted the attention of boys and girls alike. And for some reason, she chose Eve Brooks, the most shy Ravenclaw in the school, to be her friend.

"Lily and I don't meet up as often anymore,"said Eve,"But she's great to study with and she's such a kind person...it's a shame about Severus but still...Remus is great too but he's always with his little gang."

"Make the most of friendships,"said Kala, standing up,"I wish I did before I ran off to Oxford to study biochemistry."

"I don't even know what Biochemistry is."

"I don't have enough time to even try and explain it to you, little witch."

Kala made her way back to the house, not glancing back at Eve as she did. Then just as she got the conservatory door, she turned around.

"You really should come inside before dark Eve."

"Will do, Kala,"said Eve softly, nodding towards her.
