Trunks looked up from where he was peeling an orange, and nearly dropped the fruit in his shock. He sat at his kitchen table in the apartment he shared with Goten. They had each moved in together years ago, and they would probably never move out again. This was a comfortable place, fancy enough to satisfy Trunks' high class tastes, and yet not beyond the size of a simple countryside home. They did everything together. They cleaned together, they slept together, they ate together. They were practically a married couple without the whole marriage thing, and they liked it that way.
For years they'd been together. Years. And Trunks was just now realizing he had never seen Goten eat an orange.
"Goten, what the hell?"
Goten eyed him, chomping away at a single orange with another in his other hand. "Wha?"
Trunks took a moment to stare at the scene. Goten stood at the edge of the table, leaning his hip against it. He held two oranges, one already half gone in one bite. His hair stuck up in one direction off to the side in the style he'd come to love no matter what Trunks said about fashion sense, and he wore a white shirt with purple pants - also against Trunks' cries about fashion.
But none of that was the issue here. The issue was that Goten wasn't even bothering to peel the orange before eating it. He had chomped right into the fruit without any of the usual steps, and Trunks could do nothing but stare. He liked food as much as the next Saiyan, but, really?
"No one eats the orange peel, you doofus!"
"Hah?" Goten said, swallowing what was already in his mouth before stuffing the rest of the orange - peel and all - into his mouth. "Why not? It's healthy enough."
"That's not the point!" Trunks snapped. "It tastes like ass!"
"No it doesn't."
"Does too!"
"Does not."
"Does too."
"Does not."
"Does - okay, wait, no, I'm not doing this."
Goten grinned as if having won a game, but he didn't say anything. His eyes said it all, but Trunks ignored him. He would get back at Goten later. (They did like to play childish games of who could one up the other in all sorts of ways. Doing the classic "nu uh" "uh huh" thing was but one of those games).
First off, he had to fight the urge to snatch the orange away from Goten. He'd learned the hard way not to take food from another Saiyan, especially not from Goten (or Goku for that matter). Trunks didn't see the big deal, but come between Goten and his food and you'd regret it, no matter what the excuse. Still. A fucking orange peel.
"That's not how you eat an orange!" Trunks cried, waving his own orange - minus half the peel - in Goten's face. "This is how you do it. So put that down and do it the normal way."
Goten raised an eyebrow. "Why should I? I like the way it tastes, Trunks, and it really is healthy for you."
"Because I -"
He couldn't really say because he was grossed by it. Goten would make fun of him for days. Ugh, what should he do to get his way? Sometimes he just wanted to reach up and shake this idiot until he saw reason. What ever happened to their dynamic when they were kids? Trunks could pull the wool over Goten's eyes any day, and get away with anything, and make him do almost anything too.
Like kiss in the closet...
Clearing his throat at the imagery, Trunks threw a piece of orange peel at Goten. "Well, if you won't do what I say, maybe I won't kiss you for the rest of the day."
Goten froze with the orange halfway to his mouth. "What about tonight?"
"Not tonight either."
Visible struggle passed across Goten's face, and Trunks fought the urge to grin and pump his fist. Hah! Take that! He could still make Goten do what he wanted whenever -
"Meh. Okay. So long as we kiss a lot tomorrow to make up for it," Goten said, and he bit into the orange with a decidedly loud crunch.
Louder than it should have been. Like Goten was doing it just to annoy Trunks.
Trunks, meanwhile, deflated in his chair, shoulders slumped. When did he lose control of the relationship like this? Not fair. He stared at the oranges and suddenly hated to even look at them. His appetite for the fruit had gone and fled down into the abyss.
He barely saw Goten pick up a third orange. A knife leaving the drawers caught his attention, and he jerked his head up. To see Goten standing over the sink, peeling his third orange. Trunks jumped up out of the chair - which clattered to the floor - and raced over to stand beside his lover. Hands on the counter edge he gaped, and then grinned when he saw Goten flushing.
"The things I do for you," Goten muttered. "Somehow you still manage to win."
Trunks lit up and leaned in to smash his lips to Goten, twirling his tongue with the other Saiyan's, only to pull out and cough. "Oh, yuck, it really does taste like bitter orange peel."
Goten barked a laugh. "Well that was your fault. I know how to clear out the taste, though. If you want to. Later."
The wiggled eyebrows and glance down made Trunks' face blow up in red until they were both flushing at the sink. Not even thinking about oranges. Or peels. Or proper ways to eat a fruit anymore. There was nothing proper in their brains now, but they were healthy young adults so it was to be expected.
