Remus had just gotten home from the teaching job he had managed to find in a nearby muggle town— there weren’t many job options for werewolves in the wizarding world. He put his hand on the doorknob and turned, calling out for Sirius as he pushed the door open. He wasn’t met with a response and took a deep breath as he closed the door behind him.
“Sirius?” Remus called again. He still didn’t hear Sirius’ voice call out in return. He felt himself beginning to panic slightly. The last time this had happened— the last time he wasn’t met with a response— awful, awful things had happened. James and Lily had been killed, he had believed Peter to be dead, and Sirius had been put in Azkaban. He couldn’t— he wouldn’t go through this again. He can’t. Remus didn’t think he could take losing anyone else. Not Sirius, not again.
“Sirius!” he shouted, voice trembling. He fisted his shaking hands in the hem of his jumper in an attempt to still them.
Remus bit his lip as he sunk into the couch, too lightheaded to keep standing. He couldn’t stop the panic attack threatening to overtake him. He wasn’t strong enough anymore. He had lost too much already, and now—
“Remus, hey, honey,” a familiar voice spoke softly from beside Remus. He hadn’t noticed the couch dip beside him in his panic. He quickly looked over and sobbed in relief as he threw his arms around Sirius’ neck.
Sirius wrapped his arms tightly around Remus’ torso, holding him as close as he could. “Shh, it’s alright,” he cooed, threading a hand through Remus’ hair, “I’m here, I’m sorry.”
Remus sniffled and lifted his head to look Sirius in the eyes. “I-I got so worried I thought- I thought you were— I couldn’t think straight-“
Sirius shook his head and moved his hand down to cup Remus’ cheek. He pressed their foreheads together as he gently shushed Remus.
“Shh, stop worrying. I’m here now, alright? I’m sorry for scaring you like that, I was in the bathroom and didn’t hear you. Nothing is going to happen to either one of us— not if I can help it,” Sirius reassured him.
Remus nodded, closing his eyes and relaxing into Sirius’ embrace. “Thank you. I love you so much.”
“I love you too.”
