Work Text:
Shaun was eating his lunch alone in the hospital's dining area of doctors and other staff. Lea had sent him a message warning that there was no possibility of arriving at the usual time of the two, after an incident in the sector of computers linked to records of some patients that would take the whole day to finish. Sometimes the calm was good, and there Shaun could think well without the passing of people and movements of plates and glasses like in the hospital cafeteria.
As he chewed the piece of stuffed bread he usually eats, Morgan walked in to get his attention. Wordlessly, Shaun looked at her sideways. She didn't seem to have noticed his presence in the room.
- Oh, hi, Shaun. You are there. - Morgan said looking for his lunch in the fridge. It was labeled with her name - Do you mind if I stay here with you?
- No. You can stay. - Shaun replied.
They usually don't talk much, but today Shaun noticed that she was looking nervous. He'd seen her earlier practicing what she'd said would be something of full concentration. It reminded Shaun a lot of the yoga that Lea sometimes made him do. Sometimes it helped him to calm down when he was very stimulated. Lea seemed to have understood this, and she seemed to always choose when she saw him like this. She understood him very well.
Morgan was eating a salad of greens and what looked like tomatoes and some boiled vegetables. Concentrating on her lunch, she sometimes took out her cell phone, constantly checking with a little worried.
The two finished eating enjoying each other's silence. Morgan got up first, going to wash his bowl and utensils. Shaun was still engrossed in the food and article he had printed out to read, when he turned to hear Morgan scream:
- Shit! - Shaun turned worried and saw that Morgan was holding his finger, where the blood was running. He left his sandwich on the plate and walked over to her, noticing the bloody knife in the sink and Morgan's badly bruised finger.
- You need help? - He asked.
- Can you get the first-aid box? - Morgan turned to him, asking. He stated, turning to grab the box from the in the closet above. Looking at her finger again he saw that was starting to staunch the blood.
Morgan started to grab the briefcase, but Shaun intervened, causing her to stare.
- Can I do the dressing? - Shaun asked, looking into Morgan's eyes, which were as blue as his own. She just nodded, getting crestfallen again, like when her was having lunch. Sometimes he knew he had a hard time understanding what people were going through, but he could see that she looked like she wanted to talk.
- Are you okay? - Shaun asked as he cleaned his wound. The cut was pretty ugly. The question awoke her, making her open her eyes, as if caught in the act. A little embarrassed and at the same time being impressed by Shaun's perception, she replied
- No, Shaun. - She took a deep breath and became thoughtful. Shaun didn't understand now, getting a little confused, but kept silent. She seemed to have more to complete the sentence - I was never a good person, right?
- When you arrived you were a very rough person with me - Being sincere, as always, Shaun replied to Morgan, who swallowed hard, knowing the reality.
She's never been the most empathetic person in the world, and she recognizes the countless times she could have been atrocious to Shaun and so many other people. She really didn't know and didn't understand herself. Maybe she deserved what she was going through. First the whole thing with her hands, the loss of her opportunity as a surgeon, now the whole thing with Nira, the loss of the clinic for the hospital. Everything was her fault. She was a failure as a result of her actions.
- Today you are a good friend, Morgan. - Shaun said, finishing cleaning his cut and applying the band-aid, after a while without words exchanged between the two.
Morgan was caught off guard. After so much self-contempt, hearing words like these seemed to warm her heart, which was small at the moment. Without her realizing it, she saw that a few tears were streaming from her eyes, drying fast so Shaun wouldn't see her vulnerability. Uselessly, of course.
- You don't need to be blaming yourself for everything that happened. You are a good doctor, a good friend. You learned to respect me for who I am, and I am very grateful to you for that. - Shaun continued. Of course, he knew everything that happened. He and Park are almost like best friends, and he must have told him. Morgan tried not to cry anymore.
- Thank you, Shaun. I think that's what she needed for today.
- You're welcome, Morgan. Her cut is clean and bandaged. Touch it later and apply an ointment to heal well. - Shaun got up quickly, taking the first aid kit to put away, and also cleaning the knife and the accident sink. Morgan smirked, that was the way Shaun was.
Opening the door, in laughter then Lea and Park enter, who apparently had a relaxed conversation.
- Thank God, computer problems were simpler than I thought. I'm starving. - Lea arrives screaming and puts the last slice of Shaun's sandwich in her mouth and chews. Park was still distracted, looking at his cell phone and smiling watching a video of a very funny patient who was attending. Lea then looks at Morgan sitting on the couch now, seeing her bandaged finger - Morgan, what happened? - Speaking on his girlfriend's name caught Park's attention, who put his cell phone in his pocket and went to Morgan's side.
Looking at Shaun, Morgan seemed to beg him not to tell her everything that had happened. And he seemed to understand, making her thank him for the look.
- Morgan cut himself washing his knife. I helped her with the dressing. - Shaun replied, making Morgan sigh in relief.
- Yeah. That was it, it's okay. - Morgan replied too. Park looked at her and saw in her eyes that it wasn't just that. Sitting next to her, he hugged her. At that moment Lea also realized that that was not all that had happened. But out of respect, she didn't ask anything, just eating her lunch, which was in the delivery bag she'd bought, next to Shaun.
