Work Text:
Kagome threw a glare at her own daughter. A phone call from her five-year-old daughter’s teacher made her leave work immediately. Apparently, the troublesome little girl had gotten into a fight with another breed of inu yokai.
She listened to her teacher as she described what happened with her mouth slightly agape from incredulity. When Haruka saw the glare of her mother, she had the audacity to resort to her greatest weapon: puppy eyes with a pout.
With hardened resolve, she narrowed her eyes. She would not let her cuteness persuade her this time. She would not let this pass.
“I’m so sorry for my daughter’s behavior,” Kagome bowed her head as the teacher finished explaining. The little pup’s mother's response was a “hmp”.
The inuyokai woman crossed her arm and looked pointedly at her daughter. “I want your daughter to apologize to my son.”
Her eyes wander to the little boy. The poor kid’s nose was crooked and tears continued pooling down his face. Kagome sighed at her strength, she really was Sesshomaru’s daughter. Haruka did a number on that boy meanwhile she remained unscathed.
It wasn’t really a fight if it was one-sided.
“Haruka,” she spoke lightly, in a motherly way to coax her daughter. “Apologize to Tobio-kun.”
“Don’t wanna,” the girl huffed indignantly. Kagome was taken aback. “It’s not my fault he ran into my fist.”
A collective gasp could be heard in the room.
“Liar!” The boy shouted, face red beat. “You punched me.”
Yep, definitely lying. Every time she lies, her eyes would focus on the left corner of the ground.
“Well, you firstbtried to punch Haruka too- but you missed.” She let her tongue out, mocking him. “Loser.”
“Haruka,” she admonished.
“Such a rude, dishonest child you are raising, Miss,” the mom of the boy rudely commented. Kagome was about to clap back to her statement but decided not to since her daughter was in the wrong. Instead, she threw a glare at the woman.
“Haruka, you have to apologize, love. What you did was bad, okay?”
“But mama he intended to punch me first, but I dodged it!”
When Kahome was about to open her mouth, the door opened, revealing Sesshomaru, still in a business suit. Kagome was relieved to see him. Sesshomaru had a greater chance of coaxing their daughter to admit her mistakes and be repentant.
“Mister Taisho,” the teacher greeted. “Please take a seat.”
Before taking a seat beside his wife, Sesshomaru ruffled her daughter’s hair to which the girl released a delighted chuckle. She was a daddy’s girl alright.
The teacher cleared her throat. “As you can see Mister Taisho, your daughter has gotten into a fight.”
The response from her husband was not what she was expecting. She expected him to reprimand her or throw a pointed look, instead, he said: “Did she win?”
“Excuse me?” The teacher was taken aback.
“I did!” The little devil said with a light giggle, pride evident in her voice.
Oh boy. She wanted to smack him.
His lips quirked. “Hn, excellent.”
“Sesshomaru!”
“Mister Taisho!
“You- you-obnoxious,” the inu yokai woman was obviously seething now. “Now I see where your kid got her attitude. Silver inus.” The way she said the last sentence was low and venomous.
“Mister Taisho, violence is not permitted in this school. Haruka-san injured Tobio-kun that is unacceptable.”
“It is not my daughter’s fault that the Kuro pup is weak.”
Kagome squeezed his side subtly, begging him to shut up and not make matters worse than it already was. The two inus in front of them were already growling. “What he meant to say is— our daughter is extremely sorry for causing your boy harm. I will ensure that she will not do it again.”
“Hmp.”
She turned to her daughter. “Now, Haruka, apologize.”
“But Mama.”, “Kagome,” they both protested in unison.
All creatures present in the room could hear an imaginary wire snap. It was the last bit of her patience. Kagome’s ominous aura permeated the room causing shivers down her stubborn dogs’ spine.
Kagome could literally put the Kami’s into fear when she snaps.
“Apologize. Now. Both of you.”
“I am sorry Tobio-kun, Haruka will never do it again,” she finally repented. Haruka’s eyes were shut tight as she bowed her head.
“Now Tobio-kun, apologize to Haruka-san,” the teacher said. As the boy apologized, albeit reluctantly too, Kagome looked at her husband with a sharp look that could cut edges. It’s your turn, she seemed to say.
He sighed.
When they got home, Kagome was still in a bad mood. Her hands were on her hips as she glared at her daughter on the tatami mat in a seiza position, with her head bowed.
“Haruka, do you realize how wrong your actions are?”
Instead of her daughter’s voice, she heard someone else’s.
“I still fail to see how my adorable daughter’s actions were in the wrong,” the yokai standing beside their daughter defended.
“Oh really?” There was an ominous calmness in her voice. No, he did not fear her, of course, he would not, well, maybe a little bit.
“Indeed so stop subjecting my precious daughter to this torment,” he replied rather bravely without stuttering.
He could imagine her head getting bigger in anger as a few red tick marks appear. Sesshomaru was getting purified alright.
“Sit!” She motioned to the ground. Not to incur her wrath any further he imitated Haruka’s position. How low had he fallen.
“Why are you being unreasonable? This isn’t you. Do you want to teach our childr-“
“Pups.”
“Pups, children, infants, hatchlings or whatever you want to call them,” she yelled. “This kind of attitude, this violence, Sesshomaru?”
Haruka’s breathing stopped for a moment to make herself smaller. Her mother may be the sweetest and kindest person on earth but it was a different matter when she was mad.
“They’re kuro-inus,” was all he said.
Kagome face palmed as realization hit her. “Of course, of course.”
“Now you understand.”
“Correct, I understand how petty you are acting. Over a silly clan dispute, dating when, centuries or millennia ago?!” Sesshomaru turned his head to the side, avoiding her blazing eyes. “Hey, hey, look at me.”
She was snapping her fingers in front of him to get him to look at her which he did.
“Kagome,” he said softly then sighed. He had to admit she was right. Ever since he was young there was an animosity between the two inu clans and he didn’t know how it started. “I suppose you are right.”
She arched her brow, prompting him to go on.
“Haruka-“ he called his daughter softly, maneuvering his body to face her. “Punching kuro-inu’s for no reason is not okay.”
“But papa, you said-“
“If you promise me to not do it again, I’ll buy you cheesecake.”
When he looked up, Kagome was glaring once more. “What have you been teaching our daughter?”
“Nothing of importance.”
If he wasn’t going to speak up, then she would get her answers from Haruka. Mustering her usual warm voice, she spoke: “Haruka, honey, what did papa tell you?”
The way she said papa has a cutting edge into it that could cut surfaces. She looked back and forth between her parents, contemplating whether, to tell the truth or not.
Seconds later she made up her mind. Haruka threw an apologetic look toward her father. “Papa said it’s okay to punch kuro-inus since they are loathsome and despicable,” she said innocently.
“I see.” She smiled, ruffling her daughter’s head gently. “Go to your room honey. Me and your father need to settle things.”
Oh, settle things they will.
