Chapter Text
Pair 19
Anne Boonchouy
Marcy Wu
“What the hell? They spelled my name wrong again? How many times do I have to tell them there’s no O at the end?” Anne said, staring at her phone. She was sitting in the gym with Sasha on their last day of school, looking at her partner for the Disney trip. “Also, who’s Marcy Wu? Is she a freshman?”
Sasha gave her a blank stare. “Anne, you know who THEY are. They’re a junior, like us. They transferred here last school year?” Anne stared at her blankly, slowly shaking her head. “They give me the chem answers like everyday? I’ve definitely talked about them.”
Anne gasped loudly. “Oh yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them, though. Isn’t Maggie’s mad at them because they gave her the wrong answers for algebra 2?” Sasha nodded and changed the subject.
They talked for a bit before loud shouting was heard. They looked at the source and saw Maggie chasing someone in a school hoodie. “Get back here!” The person in the hoodie ran up the bleachers one by one, jumped behind Anne and Sasha, and turned back. There was surprise in their eyes and maybe a bit of amusement?
“I’m good back here actually, but you can come and talk up here, where there are witnesses.” They sounded out of breath. Maggie and hoodie person looked at Sasha for help. Sasha just shrugged while Anne decided to get involved. “What are you doing, Maggie? Don’t you have anything else to do besides harassing people?”
Maggie pointed at hoodie person. “She gave me the wrong answers on purpose.” Hoodie person caught their breath. “Only because you ruined my old journal. Those cost like 30 bucks. I had to get revenge, somehow. That’s all I did.”
Maggie glared at her, skeptically. “So you aren’t the one who dumped my math notebook in the school’s gravy?” Anne laughed at that, remembering how pissed she was that day. Hoodie person snorted but covered it up horribly. “You have zero proof that was me. We don’t even have the same lunch!”
Maggie jumped onto the bleachers, which caused hoodie person to roll their eyes, but also ready to run. “Come on, you already chased me all over the school. You’re not going to chase me all over the gym too.”
Sasha looked up, getting bored of this. “Maggie, stop being mad that Marcy played a funny prank on you.” So that’s Marcy. Anne and Marcy looked at each other awkwardly, Marcy also mouthed sorry to the two girls.
Maggie looked back at Sasha, shocked. “But the answers-“ “Maybe you shouldn’t mess with other peoples things.” Anne finally spoke up. Maggie sneered at her. “Shut up. This doesn’t concern you.”
Anne stood up and put herself between Maggie and Marcy. “Don’t care. Just leave them alone.” Maggie looked between the two and scoffed. “Whatever. I’m not gonna waste my time with two queers.” She stalked off as Marcy finally sagged down onto the bleachers. “Thanks, whoever you are and Sasha. By the way, you have my payment, right?”
Sasha nodded and handed her a bag of what looked like 25 purple Monsters. “Here you go. Don’t drink them all in one place.” Marcy laughed and made a finger gun at her. “No promises. These are for the trip on Sunday. Speaking of which, who am I with?” That last part was mostly to themself.
Marcy got our their phone, went to the website, and scrolled until they found their name. “Who the hell is Anne Boonchouy?” Marcy said, mispronouncing her last name horribly. “Is she a freshman?” Sasha looked between the two and started cackling. “You two are fucking morons.”
Marcy looked at Sasha weird and Anne raised her hand, awkwardly. “That would be me, and it’s Boonchuy. Not whatever you just said.” Marcy looked at her apologetically again.
“I am so sorry. I spend most of my time in the library except for when I have to give people answers to stuff. I don’t know most of the people here. I’m Marcy, but I guess you already know that.”
They held out their hand awkwardly. Anne shook their hand, equally as awkward. “I’m Anne. I don’t blame you for not knowing me, by the way. I mostly just talk to Sasha or the tennis team.”
Marcy was about to say something before the bell rang. “Shit, I have to go return my books. Uh-“ They looked at them and made awkward finger guns at Anne. “See you on Sunday, I guess.” They ran out of the gym, towards the library.
Later, Marcy was walking home, Monster bag in hand, thinking about theirs and Anne’s horribly awkward first meeting. All because they couldn’t resist messing with Maggie once. Or twice.
And now I have to spend a full week with this girl. Why do I even have to be going on this trip anyways? They thought back to January, when this trip was announced, and how excited their foster moms were.
“It’ll be a good chance to make a new friends. You should really consider going. It’s how me and Olivia got together.” Marcy was drawing in their journal and shook their head. “No thanks. I’m good here in the comfort of my- well the house. I’m sure you and Olivia had fun but I’m not like how you or Olivia were in high school. I hope.
Yunan made a deadpanned face at the teen. “I’m going to pretend like I didn’t hear that last part.” Olivia walked through the door, Yunan having already told her. “Marcy, I know you’re going to say no but,” “Yunan already told me and and you’re right, I did say no. I’m saying no now.” Olivia looked at her awkwardly. “What would you say if I already signed you up?”
Marcy looked at her in disbelief. “Please tell me you’re kidding.” Olivia shook her head hesitantly. Marcy threw their head back and groaned. “Why? I’m fine. I don’t need friends. I have my lizards.” Olivia tried reasoning with them. “But there’s also nerdy stuff there. You like nerdy stuff.”
The wives looked over at each other before Yunan sighed. “I’ll make you a deal. I’ll give you until may 6, that’s 6 months from now, to train your arms. On may 6, if you can beat me in an arm wrestling match, hell, if you can not lose for 10 seconds, we’ll cancel and say your sick or something.”
Marcy looked over at her, hopefully. “Really? Yunan laughed. “Of course. I’d never break a deal.” They shook on it. “Thank you.” Marcy ran upstairs to start training. Yunan and Olivia smiled at each other, knowing the outcome of the situation.
Marcy had lost the bet, Miserably. They did it to best out of 10 before they gave up and agreed to go on the stupid trip. They got to the house and walked in, hiding their monsters behind their back. “Hey kiddo, how was your last day?” Yunan said, lifting her weights. “You excited for Sunday?”
Marcy glared at her, still a bit salty that they lost after all of that training. “I am truly ecstatic. You can see it all over my face.” They made their voice as monotone as possible. Yunan rolled her eyes. “You’ll thank us after this, kid. Trust me.” Marcy rolled their eyes and ran up the stairs to their room, feeding the salamander and lizard they got before flopping onto their bed.
Olivia knocked and waited for Marcy’s muffled come in to enter. She saw the teen with their forest green comforter over their entire body, except for their black slip on vans. “Marcy, can we talk? Before you crash until 8 pm?”
Olivia heard Marcy’s muffled laugh before they pushed the covers off of their face. “Sure, what’s up, Liv?” Olivia sighed and started. “I know your not particularly excited about Disney, but try to have fun okay? I know it’s a lot for you but me and Yunan are only a phone call away.”
Marcy sighed and brought their knees to their chest. “I know you guys want me to open up and make friends but I don’t know if I’m ready for that yet. ‘Drias….really messed me up. Hell, my biological parents fucked me up. It’s taken me a long time to admit that. Now, I just want to take things slow now.” Olivia winced at the mention of their old caretakers. “I’m sorry, Marcy. You don’t have to go. I can tell the school-“
Marcy stopped her. “No, it’s fine. I should probably get out of the house a little bit this summer. Can you think of a better way to do that than going to Disneyland and helping capitalism? Besides I met my roommate today. She seems pretty cool. I’ll be fine.” And I don’t want to disappoint you.
Olivia smiled. “As a thank you, I’ll let you keep your Monsters that you snuck up here and….” She pulled out a 4 pack. “ I’ll add some. Just, don’t tell Yunan. You know what a health nut she is.” Marcy lit up and added them to the drawstring bag they put the rest in.
They hugged Olivia who hugged back softly. “Thanks Olivia, for these and everything. Besides this trip.” Olivia laughed and got up. “Your welcome, Marcy. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
She pat Marcy on the head and walked out as Marcy pulled the covers back over their head, finally kicking their vans off, and falling asleep, dreading the day after tomorrow.
