Work Text:

Act I: INVU / Orihara Izaya

pour everything out and flop

Almost three years after leaving Shinjuku and Tokyo as a whole, he got a letter in the post.

Maybe Shinra didn't hate him that much, maybe he did. Who knows. It sure didn't seem like it when opening the wedding invitation.

Invited to be Shinra's best man. There was a dull ache in his chest, knowing that he did think about him at least a bit to invite him.

Maybe he just sent it out of pity, not expecting Izaya to show up.

Yeah, that. Had to be that.

This pissed him off even more, who was Shinra to pity him?

He had finally regained the use of his legs fully, being able to move without his wheelchair freely, a few weeks back.

He could attend then, without embarrassing himself.

If he did show up, he'd ruin the mood for everyone. How sad, too bad he didn't care all that much.

It must've taken some time trying to convince Celty. How he definitely changed, with a pout and glistening eyes that she could never refuse.

Seems far-fetched, Shinra knows he would be an asshole no matter what.

He reasons with himself that he's only booking the train ticket, searching for the key to his Shinjuku apartment and purchasing the most expensive tailored suit is to be unpredictable.

He doesn't want to see any of them. Not Shinra, not Celty, not Kadota and not Shi-

Oh. Shizuo.

The man who fucked up his arms and legs, his whole body. Probably accompanied by the other blonde bitch.

The sheer thought of seeing them- seeing Shizuo- makes him want to throw up everything he has eaten in the past twenty-four hours.

He'd worry about that later.

At least if he went and saw him, Shizuo would see him too.

Best case scenario? He still sees him as an asshole.

Worst case scenario? He sees him as nothing.

He cares about being seen, by him. Seen as anything but nothing.

Orihara Izaya, the Informant of Shinjuku, was afraid of only one thing. Dogs, but was Shizuo that far from one?

He could add being seen as nothing by Shizuo to the list, though.

He'd make the most of it when seen, not if, but when.

Orihara Izaya will make sure Heiwajima Shizuo would see him.

it’s my kind of love

Act II: Can't Control Myself / Heiwajima Shizuo

it’s too late to reverse the scar

Celty hand-delivered the invitation. She seemed so ecstatic, even with the lack of a head.

Someone did want him to be special, be her bridesmaid? Best man? Who knows.

He'd have to save so much money for a suit. It wouldn't be proper to wear a bartender uniform, nor a white t-shirt with jeans. It was his best friend's day. Her day to shine.

He wonders whether they had asked Vorona, then again, they didn't know much about her.

It had been just over two years ago when they last spoke, promising to spar when she comes back.

He wonders who else they had invited, Celty would've invited that Sonohara girl but Shinra would've definitely invited Kadota, and the others like Erika by proxy, and him.

But he wouldn't dare show up, he would know he'd be there too.

He started overthinking, again.

Rage overcomes him. His cigarette was long crushed between his teeth. His last one.

He should get a new pack, but should he really? He would snap at anyone in this state, no matter who.

He hates it. He feels worthless. He isn't even here, nor won't be at the wedding.

Why does he have so much power over him, still?

His seething rage disintegrates into paranoia, full of what-if scenarios.

What if he saw him?

What if he says something in hopes of sending Shizuo into a rage-induced rampage?

What if he avoided him?

What if Izaya was afraid of him?

He missed him. He came to terms with that long ago.

He doesn't want him to be afraid, far from it. But who is he to say that when Shizuo is afraid of him too?

it feels like everything is going to explode

Act III: Something New / Kishitani Shinra

sounds above the city, trouble overflowing

Izaya was his friend since middle school.

They experienced many things together, like Shinra shielding Izaya when he was about to get stabbed by Nakura.

However, the most notable must've been him introducing Shizuo to Izaya.

It was his fault that they hated each other from the get-go, or more like getting Shizuo to hate him first. Of course, he would never reveal this fact to anyone, even his Celty.

It would cause him too many problems.

He always riled Shizuo up before their first meeting, telling him how much of an asshole Izaya was, how he would hate him.

The final straw had been when he decided to introduce them after Shizuo's fight.

It wasn't Shinra's fault Izaya started clapping, sure, he could've told him that Shizuo hated violence but it's not like he lied about anything.

Izaya never asked him, so it's also not like Shinra hid anything from him.

It was foolish to blame Shinra.

If they became friends, they would have not lasted either way. He just cut to the chase for them.

Or they would've built an immunity to one another, leaving Shinra in the dirt.

How dumb, Izaya would've fucked it in due time. He can't help himself.

He was faultless.

Sure, the rivalry sometimes annoyed him, but most of the time it was fun.

He had no interest in humans at all, all he needed was his Celty, but their hatred piqued him. It was almost amusing.

Who cares if either died? Maybe he'd hold some regret? Who knows.

He didn't know if Izaya would show up to his wedding, or if he had even gotten it. Maybe the twins gave him the wrong address?

But if he did show up, it meant that he could get the last laugh, unbeknownst to anyone.

Maybe he was sadistic, he didn't care in the slightest as long as Celty was with him.

Celty was all he needed, and he was all she needed too. But he still wanted to have whatever amusement he could have.

i look for something new.

Act IV: Ending Credits / Finale

i believed that we will be together...

Kisuke managed to convince him. He ended up finding the time to come.

Shinra tried so hard to act surprised, but you can't lie to The Liar. Celty's body language signified uneasiness, trying to look at Shizuo to make sure he was not getting mad discreetly. It almost made him laugh.

The wedding was small. Maybe 20 or so guests, ranging from Shingen and his wife to the Raira Trio. None of the aforementioned being happy about his appearance.

Since Celty had no papers, the wedding was essentially just a reception party.

He stayed as far away from Shizuo as he could, not knowing if he could handle being close to him again.

Being in the same room was hard already, but his psychiatrist at least helped him with that.

Plus the pills, but that wasn't as important.

Shizuo had been surrounded by many, trying to distract him from Izaya. Shizuo hated that.

He doesn't feel angry when seeing him, simply stressed.

He wants to talk, but Celty insisted it would bring no good. Shinra laughing at him too, fuck, he wanted to punch him more than Izaya.

Even if he did see him, what would he say?

Izaya thought about it all while sipping on red wine, as he sat with Namie, neither speaking to the other.

Not even any snide remarks regarding physique or love life.

Sure, he could crash it all by sending a gang but he wasn't in the mood for it.

Orihara Izaya isn't the type of person to regret anything, but he does feel a tinge of it when thinking about the past, particularly his first meeting with him and the arrest. It was all easier back then.

Namie had asked him what he was so focused on, but he had just ignored her.

She walked away following that, leaving him all alone at the table and his thoughts. He only spoke twice to Shinra, once to Celty if congratulations counted.

He felt a presence behind him. He knew who it was. Of course, he did. He felt it for the past ten years of his life, not counting the last three.

He stood up and took his wine with him, his legs protesting. Today was a bad day.

He walked around him and onto the balcony, wine in hand. The other merely following him on to it.

The view was stunning, overlooking a wide garden as the moonlight cascaded onto the grass and sakura blossoms.

He stood beside him, looking at the landscape too.

The silence was comforting, almost.

They turned to face one another, eyes locking. Both faces having no emotion.

Izaya's being devoid of his signature smirk and Shizuo's not having any anger or irritation.

Shizuo had his hands in his pocket as Izaya put the wine glass on the edge of the balcony.

Their eyes had said it all as Shizuo leaned down and Izaya leaned upwards, both pairs of eyes shutting as their lips touched.

It was a simple, chaste kiss. It ended as soon as it started, with Izaya speaking just after it.

"I love you but I never want to see you again."

"The feeling is mutual."

...now I’ll let you go forever

Notes:

it was meant to be bittersweet, but it's more bitter than sweet, no?

the whole series had been inspired by Taeyeons INVU album, however Shinra's song is from a different album to show how he is simply ailenated from izaya and shizuo despite wanting them to be ailenated from one another.

thank you for reading.
