Almost
Kie stood there, breathing hard, barely aware of the concrete under her feet. Her head was spinning, rendering the world a kaleidoscope of whirling colour. After what felt like an aeon, JJ finally turned around, his nostrils crusted with blood, the brightness of his blue eyes dangerously dim.
She stared at him, her mind awhirl with too many almosts, each outcome eclipsing the other. All Kie knew was that she could have lost him. If that psycho had pulled the trigger. If JJ hadn’t backed down. If she had tried to play the hero. Even now, she could still see Psycho Guy pointing the gun at JJ’s chest; still hear the echo of her own screams as one of his henchmen grabbed her around the middle, sweeping her aside.
Without thinking, she suddenly rushed forwards, JJ catching her in his arms, startled. Kie pressed her face against the front of his shirt, breathing in the bitter scent of sweat, blood and salt air; anchoring herself to the dull thud of his heartbeat. She clung to the rough black fabric with desperate hands, all but burrowing into him, holding onto what she had almost lost. Dazed, JJ hesitated before running his hand over her tangled dark curls, the weight of her in his arms strangely steadying him.
