Work Text:
Lying naked in bed, Kyra gazed thoughtfully at the face of the man sleeping next to her. Now that the euphoria of their lovemaking had subsided, she felt that unpleasant feeling again, like she shouldn't have done that kind of thing. She felt that every time she slept with someone else since Kassandra left several months ago. Not a day went by without the young misthio haunting her thoughts. Even though Kyra occupied her mind, even though she had sex with other people, everything ended up bringing her back to Kassandra.
She had turned her life upside down in addition to having given her valuable assistance in the rebellion against Podarkes and having helped her to make peace with herself. Kyra still felt a warmth that was both pleasurable and painful whenever she thought of their moonlit nights, the smell of her hair, her calloused hands lovingly roaming her body.
Damn it.
These thoughts did her good as much as they hurt her. Kyra thought she had been in love before, she thought she had discovered love with Thaletas but that was before Kassandra made her question everything. From the moment they met, the young woman had not made her indifferent, and they had ended up sharing a short but passionate lovestory until Kassandra had to leave Mykonos after the death of Podarkes. Kyra would have loved to keep her by her side, but the winds had called Kassandra to new horizons.
Kyra eventually got out of bed, careful not to wake her new lover, and she retrieved her clothes from the floor before getting dressed and heading out. The cold night air refreshed her and she walked slowly towards the beach, this beach where her first time with Kassandra had taken place, and where only the moon and the stars had been able to witness their love. Her heart sank each time she returned to this place as she was caught up in her memories. Where was Kassandra today? Over time Kyra had heard glorious stories about her, and she could easily imagine the beautiful misthio doing amazing things. She had immediately felt that Kassandra was special, and not only because of her great beauty, her intelligence or her fighting skills. It seemed to be something that emanated from her.
Kyra couldn't help thinking that centuries from now Kassandra's exploits would still be heard all over Greece.
Would they meet again one day ? Kyra hoped so. She hoped from the bottom of her heart that their destiny was to find each other, no matter whether it was in this lifetime or another. And no matter what happens, she will always consider Kassandra as her soulmate, and she will always be grateful to her for all that she has been able to give her. She had marked her life in such a short time and Kyra would keep Kassandra's mark ingrained in her forever.
The young woman finally sat down in the sand and stood there pensively observing the horizon; the calm sea was lit by the moon and the stars. It was so quiet here, so peaceful. Kyra looked up at the thousands of stars above her, wondering if Kassandra was observing the same stars right now. She also wondered if Kassandra had ever thought of her since she left, even a little. Before she left, Kyra had given her the necklace with the gold ring she used to wear around her neck. "That way you can keep a part of me with you", she had told her, and Kassandra had smiled. But Kyra suddenly had an unpleasant thought, imagining Kassandra with someone else. She wasn't naïve enough to believe that the young misthio hadn't been able to meet other lovers in the meantime, and Kyra couldn't help but feel an unpleasant pang in her heart at the thought. She hoped no one else could share this unique bond that had existed between them.
Kyra sighed, closing her eyes. She knew it wasn't good to think about it too much, but her heart seemed to taunt her sometimes. A light wind suddenly picked up, and Kyra gasped as she felt familiar calloused fingers gently brush her cheek. But when she opened her eyes she realized that there was no one but herself on this beach. Yet she was sure she hadn't imagined what she had just felt. But maybe all these thoughts of Kassandra were starting to drive her crazy, who knows?
Kyra eventually got up with a heavy heart ; she knew she couldn't stay like that moping around in past memories, she had to move on like Kassandra was probably doing right now. She looked up at the starry sky one last time, smiling at the comforting idea that she and Kassandra shared the same sky. Just the thought soothed her a little as she headed home to spend the rest of the night alone.
Meanwhile in Athens, Kassandra had positioned herself atop the statue of Athena that towered over the city, gazing up at the sky and its thousands of stars while clutching Kyra's necklace to her chest.
