Work Text:
The Yellowjackets girl’s soccer team have been stuck in the Canadian wilderness for a few months, and things are already turning out for the worst for the group. Just a few days earlier, Laura Lee perished when the plane they found exploded midair as she was trying to get help. A few days later, in what was supposed to be their own version of a homecoming dance, the event soon devolved into a primal hunting ritual when most of the group were under the influence of Misty Quigley’s mushrooms. This resulted in the Yellowjackets almost killing Travis Martinez, one of the few men of the group.
Now, Shauna and Jackie are having the biggest argument of their lives after Jackie discovered that Shauna had a fling with Jackie’s boyfriend Jeff, and also finding out the numerous secrets Shauna has kept during their years as best friends.
“No. I'm not jealous of you, Jackie. I feel sorry for you.” Shauna says to Jackie as their argument reaches a new height. “Because you're weak. And I think that deep down, you know it.
“I'm sure everyone back home is so fucking sad to be losing their perfect little princess, but they'll never know how tragic and boring and insecure you really are. Or how high school was the best your life was ever gonna get.”
“Fuck you!” Jackie lashes back.
Shauna just shakes her head. “You know what? That’s it. Get… get out.” Shauna tells Jackie as she shows her the door. “Go on. Get out!”
“No.” Jackie talks back.
“I can’t be around you,” Shauna says. “I can't even fucking look at you right now.”
“Well that sounds like your problem. Maybe you should leave.”
Shauna just scoffs at Jackie’s suggestion. “Maybe you'd be better off, since we're all so crazy.”
Coach Ben Scott then steps in to stop Jackie and Shauna’s arguing before things turn for the worst. “Okay, everybody just stop. Nobody is going outside.”
“Stay out of this coach!” Lottie lashes at Coach.
For a few moments of silence, Jackie just looks at Shauna in confusion. “Don’t even pretend like this isn’t what you wanted the entire fucking time. I don’t even know who you are anymore.”
“Or maybe you never did.” Shauna said.
With many people who want Jackie to leave outnumbering the people who want her to stay, Jackie angrily honors Shauna’s request and leaves the cabin and shuts the door behind her.
Elsewhere, in the middle of time and space, The Doctor is running around his TARDIS console as he steers his ship.
“Okay, where do you want to go next?” The Doctor asks his companion, Clara Oswald.
“Somewhere less dangerous this time.” Clara answers, “For the past week, we’ve been chased around by Sontarans, killer mannequins, and then battled a warlord who I swore was named from a Shakespeare play.”
“Yeah, I visited Bill once and he asked me if he could use that word.” The Doctor jokes. “But I know the perfect place for where to go next. How about Hollywood during the 1930s?”
That suggestion intrigues Clara. “I’m listening.”
“Yeah! Hollywood 1933. Visit Frank Capra while he’s making It Happened One Night. Meet Clarke Gable and Claudette Colbert. And hey, maybe Capra can cast us as extras. It’ll be fun doing the bus singalong.”
“I’m down for a trip to Hollywood.”
“Okay!” The Doctor says as he starts putting the settings heading the TARDIS to Hollywood. “One vacation fit for a movie star, coming right up!” But just as the Doctor finishes putting the coordinates, he notices that something is wrong.
“I did not touch anything this time.” Clara said.
“I know.” The Doctor says in a grim tone. “Something’s wrong. The TARDIS is acting rather unusual. Not like sending us to a random location whenever there’s trouble.”
Suddenly, the TARDIS burst out a few sparks and before the Doctor and Clara knew it, the TARDIS started to violently shake.
“What is happening?!” Clara shouts as she holds on to the console.
“Something is pulling the TARDIS in!” The Doctor answers.
“Can you try and stop it?!”
“I can’t stop her from taking us to what’s pulling us, but I can safely materialize the TARDIS so we won’t crash!”
Struggling to hold on ,The Doctor pulls a few levers and presses some buttons on the console in order to get the TARDIS to safely land. After a few seconds the shaking stopped, and the Doctor and Clara can hear the TARDIS’ usual wheezing sound. The Doctor then goes to one of the console’s screens to see where they are. From his screen, he says that they are in a forest covered in snow during dusk, and in front of them is a cabin.
“See what did I tell ya?” The Doctor gleefully tells Clara. “The TARDIS managed to land safely without a single scratch on her. And on snow too. That’s a double jackpot on safety.”
“Doctor, where are we?” Clara asks as she sees what the Doctor is seeing on the screen.
“I don’t know. The TARDIS says we’re on Earth. From the looks of it, we’re in a Canadian forest in the middle of nowhere. But there’s a cabin in front of us, meaning there might be some living people around here. Although there are no lights inside, meaning probably not.” The Doctor then checks the other screen scanning the area. “The TARDIS doesn’t seem to detect any danger around the place yet I don’t know why we’re pulled in here. But it doesn't matter because we can now go on our vacation.”
The Doctor puts in the coordinates to where they were supposed to go and pulls the lever for the TARDIS to leave the Canadian wilderness. But when he put the TARDIS on stop, he notices he is in the same Canadian forest, but in a different spot and its now daytime.
“Are you playing a trick on me?” Clara asks when she looks at the screen of where they are.
“What? No!” The Doctor answers back, annoyed by Clara’s answer. The Doctor tries doing the same thing a couple of times to get the TARDIS out of the area, but they’re always in the same location. “Well, whatever pulled us in here doesn’t want us to leave. We should check the forest and find anything funny.”
“Uh, Doctor.” Clara says in a concerned tone.
“What?” The Doctor asks. The Doctor then looks in the direction where Clara is pointing and notices a girl covered with blankets on the TARDIS floor.
Jackie and Shauna’s big fight only lasted almost a full day, yet it felt like it happened a long time ago to the remaining members of the Yellowjackets. While most of the group moved on from Jackie, Shauna was starting to have second thoughts. Shauna would sometimes look outside from her window in the attic of the cabin a couple of times in the night thinking Jackie might come back inside. There were a couple of instances where she thought of going outside and getting Jackie in herself, but her anger always wins out in the end.
The next morning, Shauna wakes up suddenly from a bad dream. Drowsy, she walks to the window to look over Jackie again. But what she sees outside gravely concerns her.
“No!” Shauna quietly exclaims what she discovers outside.
Shauna quickly climbs down the attic and storms through the front door, which wakes everyone who was sleeping downstairs up. She ignores the other Yellowjackets’ amazement that there’s snow outside. As Shauna opens the door, her worst fear is starting to become reality.
“Jackie.” Shauna says as she tries to hold back the tears.
Shauna runs to the spot where Jackie was supposed to be sleeping that night. She quickly shovels the snow to see if Jackie is safe.
But when she clears the snow, Shauna discovers that Jackie isn’t there.
Shauna continues shoveling out the snow around the campfire in hopes of finding Jackie. When the rest of the Yellowjackets got out and look at what Shauna’s up to, Taissa goes to Shauna’s side to try and console her.
“Shauna. Shauna! You have to stop.” Taissa tells Shauna before she breaks down. “What are you doing? Even if you shovel all this snow in this forest won’t help you find Jackie.”
“It’s... it’s all my fault!” Shauna says as she cries on Taissa’s shoulder. “I never should’ve thrown her out. I was a shitty friend to her.”
“Don’t say that.” Taissa consoles Shauna. “Sometimes we don’t act ourselves when we’re angry. And who knows? Nat, Travis, and Javi haven’t returned to the cabin as well. Maybe Jackie’s safe and with them right now.”
After a few words and reassurance, Taissa and Shauna head back to the cabin as Taissa holds onto Shauna. The other Yellowjackets quietly look at Shauna when she walks back to her room, afraid to talk to her as if they’re going to say the wrong thing to her.
“Okay everyone, that’s enough now.” Coach Ben tells everyone. “Let Shauna have some time alone unless you want to comfort her. But in the meantime, this snowfall has made our current predicament more difficult. So I want all of you to form two groups and either find food or chop wood.”
Everyone follows Coach Ben’s orders and goes to their respective duties. But in some people’s minds, Shauna particularly, they worry about what happened to Jackie.
Lottie though has another thought. “We don’t need to be worried about getting hungry any more.” Lottie says.
“Why is that?” a confused Coach Ben asks Lottie .
“Because we are finally getting out of here.” Lottie says which makes Coach Ben even more confused.
“H... How?”
“By the Bells of St. John”.
In reality, Jackie is actually miles away from the cabin safely in the TARDIS. But she is extremely cold from the snow with almost no protective layerings besides a blanket. The Doctor uses his Sonic Screwdriver on Jackie to check her status.
“Doctor,” Clara said, “is she-”
“No, she’s actually fine.” The Doctor said before Clara could finish her question. “Although she might have if she stayed outside the snow for another hour. Must’ve hitched a ride when we landed in front of that cabin. Normally we might’ve left her, but the TARDIS sensed a lot of suffering in her. Didn’t want to leave her behind.”
“And we can help her, right?”
“Yes! It’s the TARDIS. She has lots of remedies from all of time and space. Even thawing out people who are almost frozen.”
The Doctor and Clara grab the almost completely frozen Jackie from the floor and put her in one of the TARDIS bedrooms. The Doctor lays a special blanket for her, and sets the room in a specific temperature to safely thaw Jackie. Once that’s done, The Doctor and Clara head back to the control room to figure out what’s going on.
“Do you think it’s safe to leave her here alone?” Clara asks about Jackie.
“Yes, my ship is one of the safely guarded places in the universe. No one can get in willy nilly.” The Doctor reassures Clara. “Now, right now we should get out and split up so we’ll know what’s happening.” Clara quietly agrees with the plan and heads to the door. “Wait, hang on!” The Doctor stops Clara. “Don’t you want my Sonic Screwdriver? I think you need more than I do.”
“No, you need it more.” Clara jokes. “Plus it’s just trees and snow. Why would I use the Sonic Screwdriver.”
The Doctor and Clara split up and analyze the forest to see if there’s something out of the ordinary. For The Doctor’s part, his observation of the forest is disappointing. He spent at least a couple of hours scanning the area with his Sonic Screwdriver only to find nothing. There’s a couple of times where The Doctor almost crossed paths with a few members of the Yellowjackets, but neither the Yellowjackets nor The Doctor seem to notice one another.
As for Clara, her search is anything but boring. After a few miles, Clara comes across the wreck of the plane that brought the Yellowjackets to the wilderness.
“Okay, this looks pretty grim.” Clara says.
Clara observes the plane and sees how badly damaged it was from the crash. The plane is in two or three pieces with the back piece of the plane badly burnt. Clara also sees a message on the side of the plane telling rescuers where to find them, concluding that there might be survivors around. She also finds a broken black box a few yards from the plane. Clara notices that the damage to the black box was caused by someone rather than by the crash itself.
Clara stops looking around the plane once she hears voices coming in her directions. She hides behind a tree so anyone wouldn’t notice her, and to hear what the people coming are saying.
Turns out, it’s Natalie and Travis who had spent the previous day trying to find Travis’ brother, Javi, while also spending the entire night in the plane wreck when snow started to fall. The two eventually found Javi and decided to head back to the plane.
“We don’t know how long he was out there.” Travis tells Natalie.
“Probably two days.” Natalie answers back. “It’s surprising that your brother is okay after all this time. Especially with all this snow.”
“Yeah. He’s a little bit cold, but pretty much all right.”
After a few moments, Natalie let out a big angry sigh. “God, this is starting to get out of hand!” Natalie says. “First, we lost Laura Lee from a plane explosion trying to get help. Now the rest are starting to act all feral against you. We really need to get out of here!”
“Then how are we going to do that, Nat?” Travis said.
“I don’t know. Something!” Natalie lashes back. “We’ve been here for who knows how long and do you think they manage to find us by now. Fuck it. I’ll find help by foot.”
Natalie starts walking towards the direction they have never been to, but Travis doesn’t want to follow her. “Nat, don’t do this. We don’t know how far we are to the nearest town.”
“I don’t fucking care! Even if it takes me days, it’s better than staying here for the rest of Winter.”
Just as Natalie continues walking, she is stopped by the sound of what sounded like multiple bears growling. She holds the rifle firmly and ready to stand ground.
“Are there even bears around this area?” Travis asked.
“Don’t know. But I think we can handle them.” Natalie takes another step, but she falls down when she hears the bears growling again. Only this time it’s louder.
Clara, still hiding behind the tree, tries to think of how to help Natalie, Travis, and Javi away from the bears. Just as Natalie is about to fire the rifle, Clara throws a small piece of rock from the ground to Natalie’s direction. She then makes a loud cawing sound to attract the bears, and Natalie and Travis are confused by this.
“What was that?” Travis asks.
“Well whatever or whoever that is it’s attracting the bears away.” Natalie lowers the rifle and scoffs. “Come on, let’s head back to the others.” Natalie disappointedly said and Travis and Javi follow her.
After waiting for the three to be nowhere in sight, Clara comes out of hiding and goes to the spot where Natalie almost crossed. “Why won’t you want us to leave?” Clara says.
Clara crosses the line and she too can hear the sound of multiple bears roaring in her direction. “Hmm. No sign of bears nearby. Okay then. Let’s try another way.”
Clara picks up the rock she threw earlier and throws the rock across the line. This time, she hears a loud screeching sound. It sounded like something that is not from Earth, which Clara finds more believable than the sound of bears roaring.
“Now that’s more convincing.” Clara remarked before running back to tell The Doctor.
A few hours have passed and Shauna has emerged from her room as if nothing has happened, which concerns Coach Ben. “Shauna, why are you up?” Coach Ben asks.
“Nothing.” Shauna replies. “Just want to help the group.”
“Are you sure? You can just take the rest of the day off and I can get Van, Mari, and Akilah to look for Jackie.”
“No, I’m fine Coach. Really. I want help.”
Coach Ben sighs and realizes it’s futile to out argue her. “Okay. I’m going to let you off easy for today and have found some fresh fruit and berries in the forest. And I’ll have Taissa tag along as well.”
Shauna wants to tell Coach Ben about not wanting to bring Taissa along, but she’s now too tired to argue back and she agrees to find food with her.
Shauna and Taissa manage to find some fresh berries in the forest despite the hardship of the winter weather, but Taissa notices how quiet Shauna has been during their berry picking. “Jackie’s gonna be alright, Shauna.” Taissa asks her, breaking the silence.
“You don’t know that.” Shauna tells Taissa while not giving her any eye contact as she picks berries.
“I know, but I’m more worried about you. You haven’t been the same since Doomcoming. What happened?”
Shauna stops picking berries and lets out a big sigh. “I… I don’t know. Jackie being missing has made me realize how I’m just as bad as I accused Jackie yesterday. I wish she was here just so I can apologize to her and tell her what a horrible friend I was.”
“Hey, don’t beat yourself up over this. I’m sure Jackie is safe. And like I said before, maybe she’s with Nat and Travis.” And just like that, Shauna and Taissa find Natalie and Travis as they try to comfort a still shivering Javi. “Where have you been?” Taissa asks them.
“Looking for Javi.” Natalie answers. “And what about you guys? What happened when we were gone?”
“Where’s Jackie?” Shauna asks, but Natalie and Travis don't know what Shauna’s talking about.
“We… thought she was with you.” Travis said.
“No. She’s gone.”
“Jackie’s missing?!” Natalie says. “Shit! I’m sorry Shauna but she isn't with us as well.”
This revelation makes Shauna want to break down again until Taissa goes to her side and comforts her. “Hey, hey settle down. Maybe we’ll take a breather back in the cabin and we’ll try and search Jackie later.” Natalie and Travis nod and follow Taissa.
But as she’s about to join Taissa, Shauna sees something strange that not even the other four noticed. A few yards from where she’s standing, Shauna sees the TARDIS, safely parked as The Doctor left her. Shauna is confused as to why an old police box from England is standing in the middle of the Canadian forest. Shauna takes a few steps toward the TARDIS to get a closer look, but the sound of the TARDIS startles her and Shauna runs back to Taissa and the others.
By sunset, The Doctor still hasn’t found anything yet on his part. As he heads back to the TARDIS, The Doctor bumps into Clara, who is still running over what she discovered. “Oh, hey Clara! How was your little science experiment?” The Doctor asks.
“Pretty interesting. And you?”
“Uh, no. Nothing from me.” The Doctor says as he scratches his head with the Sonic Screwdriver. “Even with my Sonic, I still couldn’t detect any unearthly presence in this forest. And you?”
“I didn’t see that many either.” Clara , but she continues on. “But I got lots to talk about what I encountered.”
After just a few hours since The Doctor and Clara left her to heal, Jackie Taylor has finally woken up. Normally in her condition, Jackie would’ve taken a lot more time to fully thaw. But thanks to the TARDIS room temperature and a special blanket The Doctor placed on her, the ice was able to melt in just a matter of hours. Although Jackie still feels cold and shivering, she’s strong enough to walk.
As Jackie completely opens her eyes, she discovers that she isn’t outside the cabin. She is confused and weirded out that she is somewhere with metallic walls. Jackie gets up and starts wandering around the TARDIS corridors, which makes her feel more uncomfortable to be in than in a bedroom she recalls not sleeping the night before. Jackie starts to feel a little bit comfortable when she enters the TARDIS control room, but is now even more confused about where she is. But just as she heads up to the console, Jackie hears a door opening and hears two voices.
“An alien where you can’t see doesn’t want us to leave?” The Doctor asks Clara when they enter the TARDIS.
“An alien who can also make bear noises when you think about leaving.” Clara adds to the description she encountered earlier. “Does that sound weird enough for you?”
“No, not weird. Just another typical Tuesday for me.” The Doctor says. Although Jackie, who is overhearing The Doctor and Clara’s conversation, finds it weird for her. “Luckily, I just know the perfect device that can detect our invisible monster.”
Just as The Doctor is about to get the device, he discovers a frightened yet confused Jackie hiding by the doorway to the TARDIS corridors. “Oh hello there, you must be that frozen girl we picked earlier. So nice that you woke up. But anyway, I’m the Doctor and this is my companion Clara.” The Doctor introduces himself while Clara quietly waves to Jackie.
“I’m… Jackie Taylor.” A frightened Jackie introduces herself.
“Jackie Taylor. Hello there Jackie.” The Doctor says as he shakes Jackie’s hand.
“Am I in Heaven? Or is this Hell?”
“Uh neither actually. You’re still alive. My ship just managed to save you before it’s too late.”
Jackie starts to feel very at ease and sits on the stairs leading up to the upper level of the control room. “Where am I exactly?”
“It’s called the TARDIS. She’s part spaceship and part time machine.”
Jackie shakes her head and puts out a little laugh in disbelief. “I must be dreaming. This feels like something out of Star Wars.”
“No, this is nothing like Star Wars, and I don't think Star Wars never has time travel.” The Doctor comments. “And no, you are not dreaming.”
“Trust me.” Clara tells Jackie. “I traveled with him for a few months ago and I can tell you it’s very much real.”
“Now Clara, why don’t you try and help Ms. Taylor feel like she’s home while I go find what I’m looking for.”
While The Doctor goes to another room looking for what he needs, Clara tries to start a conversation.
“Hi, I’m Clara again by the way.” She introduces herself.
“I’m Jackie.” Jackie says as she shakes Clara’s hand.
“Jackie. Beautiful name. My mother almost named me that. ” Their conversation gets interrupted when The Doctor returns with a strange large device with a large mirror hooked on top. “Ew! What is that thing?” Clara tells The Doctor.
“A gift from an old relative.” The Doctor gleefully answers. “I thought it would be a useless gift, but if it helped me once, it can help me again.”
“So what does it do?”
“It identifies any species in an instant. It can also see anything that is invisible. Used it once when I battled a Krafayis in 19th Century Paris, but it broke the mirror. Luckily, I was able to fix it when the time became useful to use it again.” The Doctor hooks up the machine and sees the device still functional. “Go on, come look in the mirror.”
Clara steps up, but Jackie decides that she wants to test out the device. Jackie takes a look at the mirror and the device recognizes her as human before the TARDIS prints out the results. “Okay, I was expecting something more, but still cool.” Jackie says.
The Doctor unhooks the device from the TARDIS console and wears it as he heads out. “Alright then. Time to go monster hunting.” The Doctor says and heads out.
As soon as the Doctor turns on the machine when he gets outside, the species matcher immediately dings which makes The Doctor look behind yet he finds nothing. When he turns his back on the species matcher, the device says it recognizes a regular owl. The Doctor looks up and sees an owl sitting on the tree where the TARDIS is parked next too. The owl hoots and The Doctor just laughs it off.
“Yes, I get that a lot.” The Doctor jokes, referring to the owl’s hooting sounding similar to the question everybody asks whenever they ask what his name is. “Come on, you old thing! We really want to know what’s keeping us here.” The Doctor says as he slaps the machine as if it’s broken before he starts walking around the forest.
Back in the TARDIS, Jackie, still feeling a bit cold, remains in the control room as Clara returns with a cup for Jackie.
“Hey, I got a cup of hot cocoa for you.” Clara says and Jackie quickly grabs the cup from her. “Wow, never seen someone that excited about hot cocoa.”
“Oh, you don’t know how long I’ve needed some fresh food.” Jackie tells her.
“Right, forget about that plane crash. Heard someone earlier that you’ve been stuck here for a few months.” Clara then notices something’s bothering Jackie right now. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Nothing’s wrong.” Jackie tells Clara as she tries to not look at her.
“No, from the looks of it, you’re really sad. And from the looks of your eyes, it’s not the plane crash that’s making you sad.”
Jackie tries to not face Clara as she tries to hold back from crying. “I just lost my best friend.”
“Oh my. What happened?” a shocked Clara asks.
“It’s not what you think of how it happened. Jackie corrects Clara. Jackie sighs and decides to face Clara. “We had a big fight. And it was ugly.”
“What were you two fighting about?”
Jackie takes a deep breath before she tells Clara everything that happened. “Our entire friendship. She accused me of being a vain person who thinks about popularity and that I never care about her own needs. And it’s not like she’s a saint either. I called her out on her sleeping with my boyfriend the night before we crashed into this place. Plus she and some of our friends went Lord of the Flies on me and another person from our group. I mean… all of them were under the influence of shrooms, but from that moment it felt like I saw the real her.”
“Wow. That’s…. quite a lot.” Clara says not knowing what to say after that.
“And… she was right. I didn’t want to believe it at first, but she was right about everything. That I’m just a spoiled princess who thinks that my best years in life are high school, and that deep down I’m weak, and insecure.” Tears are finally starting to come out of Jackie’s eyes. “I don’t even know my best friends.” Jackie says before covering her face as she cries.
“Hey hey, it’s okay.” Clara tells Jackie as she tries to console her. “Don’t beat yourself up over this. You are not weak. And you still have a lot of time to do what you want in life. There’s no reason to believe in your flaws. You know there are times when I traveled with The Doctor, I felt like I couldn’t do it because I’m just a regular human. But I always remember what The Doctor said: ‘Never cruel nor cowardly. Never give up, never give in’.”
“You… really think I’m not a fuck up?"
“Yes. Like I said, you still have a lot of time to be a better person.”
“Thank… Thank you.” Jackie tells Clara as she wipes away the tears and hugs her.
It’s been almost an hour, and The Doctor still hasn’t found any alien beings in the forest. The only time his species matcher was able to detect was the owl from the tree next to the TARDIS. As if he’s ready to give up, The Doctor hears a ding from the device. “Aha, finally! Now prepare to meet your maker you…” The Doctor looks at the mirror, but he is disappointed by what he sees. “… harmless rabbit thing.”
Turns out, the device just identifies a rabbit, which then hops away as soon as The Doctor points his Sonic Screwdriver at it.
“Maybe Clara is wrong about this invisible monster.” The Doctor sighs. “Or maybe I should wait til morning when it wakes up.” As soon as The Doctor heads back to the TARDIS, he hears another ding from the device. “Oh please what is it this time? Crickets? A parrot?” The Doctor remarks before he looks at the mirror only to find an old familiar foe…
A Weeping Angel.
“No.” The Doctor whispers. “But how could it be?”
The Doctor sees that there are now two Weeping Angels behind him and is afraid to face them. He still vividly remembers how the Weeping Angels took away Amy and Rory in New York which led him to a dark exile. The Doctor turns around, but doesn’t see them. He then turns back to his mirror and sees the Weeping Angels in the mirror, but still in the same location as he last saw them.
“But that’s not possible. I stop looking at you for a moment and yet you didn’t move.” The Doctor then takes a closer look at the Angels and notices something a bit odd about them.
“Oh I see. Not common, but still familiar. Now it all makes sense.” With this revelation, The Doctor runs back to the TARDIS in order to get a better understanding of these Weeping Angels.
“Now it all makes sense!” The Doctor repeats himself when he enters the TARDIS.
“Why? Did you ever figure out what’s behind them? Clara asks.
“Yes. The reason we’re dragged in here and not allowed to leave in the first place was caused by the Weeping Angels.” The Doctor explains.
“The Weeping Angels?” Clara says. “I remember you explained them to me, but I never see one in real life.”
“Well I encountered them a few times, but these are not the regular Weeping Angels that I used to face.”
Jackie feels confused by all what The Doctor and Clara just said. “I’m sorry, are you just saying angels are the reason we’re stuck here?” Jackie asks.
“That’s right.” The Doctor answers.
“But how could it be? Aren’t all angels a symbol of all things good.”
“Yes, but in some cultures in the universe, including old cultures on Earth, angels are sometimes a symbol of evil.” The Doctor tells Jackie before turning his attention to Clara. “Now Clara, do you remember what I told you about the Weeping Angels?”
“Not much actually. All I remember is you saying to beware of them, but you never explain why.” Clara explains.
“Correct, I want you to keep it that way.” The Doctor tells Clara, still remembering what the Weeping Angels did to his former companions.
“And how will that help? If we’re going to be stuck here for a while, then tell us: what are the Weeping Angels and why are these from the forest different from a regular one?”
“A lot actually.” The Doctor replies.
“I have the time.” Clara tells The Doctor. “So tell us what are these ‘Weeping Angels’ and why are they dangerous.”
The Doctor takes a deep breath and begins to explain the Weeping Angels. “Okay, to start with the basics: Weeping Angels are quantum locked creatures who can only move if we don’t look at them. And if they touch you, they can send you back in time. The farther the time, the more they feed from that energy. They’re the only creatures who can mercifully kill you.”
“But a Weeping Angel with trimmed wings is a lot more powerful than the common Weeping Angels. You might think having their wings trimmed is a punishment, but they actually see it as an honor. A trimmed winged Weeping Angel can do a lot of things than a regular Weeping Angel can do. Sending you back And they are a lot more cruel than the regular ones.
“Instead of taking you back in time, a trimmed wing Weeping Angel just traps you in a single area. They can also manipulate non-human species like animals to attack its prey whenever they’re close to escaping. Unlike some regular Weeping Angels, every trimmed winged Angels have an ability to make any sound to scare its prey. The only nice thing I can say about them is you can actually blink around them through some objects like a special mirror. But why would they because a trimmed Weeping Angel is always unseeable to the naked eye. They rather see their prey descend into madness and have them kill each other. That way, their method is faster and inhumane than letting a regular old Weeping Angel send you back in time and let you die out of old age. They consume more energy by killing you now rather than wait for a long time.
“Think of them as zookeepers, but with the personality of a Greek god and that the whole zoo is their buffet.”
Jackie understands what The Doctor is saying, but doesn’t want to believe it. “So let me get this straight. A bunch of alien statues are trapping us in the middle of nowhere and wants us to kill each other?” Jackie asks.
“Correct.” The Doctor says as he snaps his fingers.
“This is a bunch of bullshit.” Jackie scoffs. “Much less than I want to believe that aliens fucking exist.”
“Oi! First of all, I don’t tolerate that kind of language in the TARDIS.” The Doctor remarks. “And second, of course aliens are real. Myself included.”
Jackie shakes her head. “You don’t look like an alien.”
“Lots of aliens look like humans. Not like your typical Earth image of a green man with big eyes and can do something magical with their fingers.”
“Alright can we get on with the big picture here!” Clara stops them. “Now Doctor, how are we going to stop them?”
“The same way as we stop a regular Weeping Angel. By having them look at each other.”
Since returning from food gathering Shauna cannot stop thinking about wanting to find Jackie, and the blue box that she alone is the only one who noticed. By dinner time, almost everyone seems to forget about Jackie except for Shauna and sometimes Taissa. She realizes that in order to find Jackie, Shauna has to find her alone.
Shauna has to wait until everyone is asleep in order to leave quietly. Shauna has to stay in bed for at least 10 minutes so she won’t look suspicious to anyone who is still awake. Getting to the front door is difficult for Shauna because everyone downstairs are sleeping close to one another so it is difficult for her to not accidentally step on someone. She makes a few noises on the way to the door, but luckily she didn’t notice anyone being awakened from it.
With only a flashlight and a warm jacket in her, Shauna sets off to find Jackie in the forest alone. Luckily for Shauna, she doesn't see any signs of wolves or any big animal predators in the area, but she is a little bit afraid due to how dark it is despite holding a flashlight. For who knows how long, Shauna almost starts to lose hope of finding Jackie… until she sees the big blue box again.
“What are you really?” She says.
Shauna gets closer to the blue box than when she saw it earlier. When she reaches the blue box, Shauna hears it humming almost very loudly as if it’s alive. She can also hear voices inside. One man and two women. Shauna doesn’t understand what they are saying inside except for the words “angels” and “aliens”.
Inside the TARDIS, The Doctor, Clara and Jackie, are still discussing their plan on how to stop the Weeping Angels. “It might be difficult, but we can still beat them if we do it correctly.” The Doctor says. “Now, any of you lot see or hear anything out of the ordinary?”
“Well, I overheard one girl telling this other guy about how they lost someone named Laura Lee from a plane explosion when she attempted to go find help.” Clara says.
The Doctor turns his attention to Jackie. “Is that true?” he asks.
“Yes, I saw it happen.” Jackie tells The Doctor. “There was the time when one of my friends, Van, almost got killed by a wolf attack when she and some of us attempted to walk on foot. And… we also saw a corpse of the man who used to live at the cabin during our first night there.”
The Doctor and Clara are starting to feel a little bit uneasy. “That… sounds macabre.” The Doctor says.
“There’s more. We did some sort of séance and one of our friends, Lottie Matthews, got possessed that she started speaking French. And she mentioned something about the need for blood.”
“Okay, this situation is starting to sound more like a ghost story than most of our adventures.” Clara says.
“I know, but that’s the thing about some Weeping Angels, trimmed ones included, is that they can sometimes communicate through a human host.” The Doctor tells Clara before turning his attention to Jackie again. “Now, tell me more about your friend Lottie Matthews.”
“Well, besides the whole séance episode, Lottie also mentions about seeing visions.”
The Doctor takes a few moments of silence trying to analyze all of this information. “Hmm. This Lottie Matthews might be the key to defeat the Weeping Angels.”
Outside the TARDIS, Shauna is still by the door hearing what is being said, but still cannot know what they are saying inside. When she hears the mention of Lottie, Shauna fears what she thinks this mysterious group will try to hurt Lottie and the rest of the Yellowjackets that she tries to run back to the cabin. But suddenly, the TARDIS doors open which makes Shauna fall straight inside.
When The Doctor and the others see what happened, The Doctor points his Sonic Screwdriver at Shauna as if it’s a weapon, which makes Shauna raise her arms. “You! State your name, species, and your intent!” The Doctor tells Shauna.
Shauna feels scared and confused from what The Doctor says. “I’m… Shauna Shipman. Um… human. I’m… just looking for my friend.” Shauna stammers and The Doctor lowers his Sonic Screwdriver.
“Oh. In that case, hello I’m The Doctor. I come in peace as you humans think we aliens say.”
When Shauna gathers herself, she notices something odd about her surroundings. She takes a few steps backwards to compare and contrast inside and outside before going back inside the TARDIS. “It’s bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.” Shauna says.
“Oh I always love it when people say that.” The Doctor laughs. “Yes, what you are seeing is true. You are in the TARDIS. She’s part spaceship and part time machine. Wait, hang on, how did you get inside the TARDIS? The doors are supposed to be locked.”
“I… I don’t know. The doors were locked when I saw it, but then it just opened by itself.” Shauna explains to The Doctor.
“No that does not work. The TARDIS doesn’t just magically open by itself.” The Doctor says before he hears a noise coming out of the TARDIS console, to which he understands. “You opened the doors?” The Doctor asks the console and the TARDIS makes a noise implying yes. “But why? I told you that we are not a taxi service…”
While The Doctor argues with the TARDIS, Shauna looks around the ship in awe of it. She is amazed by how futuristic it looks compared to the primitive cabin she’s stuck in for a few months. Shauna’s amazement ends when she comes across a familiar face sitting by the stairs, all bundled up in a blanket.
“Jackie.” Shauna says as she tries to hold back the tears.
Shauna runs to Jackie to hug her, but Jackie pushes her away quickly.
“Cut it with the bull crap, Shipman.” Jackie tells her.
Jackie has sometimes called Shauna by her last name in a playful manner, but the way she just says it now has the tone of animosity. “What?! But Jackie…”
“Just stop it, Shauna. You think I forgot about our fight?”
When Clara realizes that Jackie and Shauna are gonna fight, she decides to take care of it by herself and pushes The Doctor out of the TARDIS. “Hold on, what are you doing?” A confused Doctor asks Clara.
“Taking you out. I think I should handle this situation.”
“But this is still my TARDIS!” The Doctor exclaims.
“I know, but I think you should find something to beat those Weeping Angels. Maybe go to the crash site of the plane and find something there.”
“But Clara…” Clara shuts the door behind The Doctor before he can finish his sentence.
Clara turns her attention back to Shauna and Jackie, they’re still arguing but not as intense as the night before. “You think I would’ve forgotten about how you said that I was just weak and insecure?”
“I didn’t mean any of that, Jackie. I was just blinded with rage.”
“And how you had sex with Jeff the day before we crashed in here?”
“I’m sorry, Jackie! How many times do I have to say it?”
“If you’re really sorry, then why didn’t you let me in when I almost froze to death?”
That question really hit Shauna hard. “I… I don’t know. But Jackie, I…”
“That’s what I thought." Jackie says before turning to Clara. “Does this spaceship have any useful things that I can do?” she asks Clara.
“Well, there’s a swimming pool down the hall to your left. The TARDIS might be big, but you can find it right away. And if you’re hungry, the kitchen is right next to the pool.” Clara tells Jackie.
“Thank you. I really need a good swim after what happened to me in the past few days.” Jackie says before heading to the swimming, leaving Clara to take care of a despondent Shauna.
Out in the forest The Doctor is at the plane crash, still a bit annoyed that Clara simply kicked him out of the TARDIS. “Honestly, I don’t know why Clara and the TARDIS are personally helping two people they don’t even know. It’s as if they know them as two old friends” The Doctor says to himself as he scavenges in the plane crash.
The Doctor finds almost nothing in the plane that he finds useful until moves yards away from the plane. “Why hello there. What are you doing out here far away from the plane?” The Doctor exclaims as he picks up the broken black box. The Doctor uses his Sonic Screwdriver to see how badly damaged the black box was. “Hmm, scan says that your damage is by a human rather than by the crash itself.” The Doctor concludes. “But it doesn’t, you’re still functional enough to help beat the Angels.”
The Doctor then heads back to the TARDIS with the black box in his hands, but stops when he hears what sounds like a rifle being loaded. “The fuck do we have here?” a voice says with a rifle pointing at the back of The Doctor.
Back in the TARDIS, Shauna remains in the control room all by herself. She is still in awe by the TARDIS, from how it’s bigger on the inside to it’s futuristic design. She then heads up to the upper level of the control and comes across a small bookshelf. Shauna looks at the books and find it that they are to her liking.
“Hi there.” Clara interrupts which makes Shauna a little bit scared. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”
“None taken.” Shauna laughs. “We haven’t properly meet. I’m Shauna Shipman by the way.”
“Clara Oswald.” she says as she shake hands with Shauna.
“So… how’s Jackie?”
“She’s doing pretty much okay. Not feeling cold like when she woke up.”
“Oh. That’s good.” There were a few seconds of silence because Shauna is afraid to talk about Jackie. “It’s not entirely my fault.”
“I know.” Clara says which shocks Shauna.
“Wait, what?!”
“You know, I was about to be entirely angry at you after what Jackie told me about you.” Clara tells Shauna. “But after the way you acted when you saw her and how sad you were trying to find her, I figure that there’s a lot of regret about your fight with her.”
Shauna lets out a big sigh and takes a moment to think. “I was a big jerk to her.”
“And it’s not entirely your fault.”
“It is all my fault. If I had taken Jackie in last night and apologize to her, none of this would’ve happened.”
“But it didn’t.” Clara reassures Shauna. “What matters is that Jackie is safe.”
Shauna sighs again and remembers what she did with Jeff. “I really regretted stealing her boyfriend. I don’t even know why I did.”
“There must a reason.” Clara says. “Try your best and think of why you did."
Shauna is feeling terrified about telling the truth. “I… I don’t think I want to.”
“It’s alright. I promised that I won’t be mad at you.”
Shauna takes a deep breath, but feels scared about she’s going to say. “It… felt like I couldn’t keep Jackie, so I took it out on the person she loves. I did it because… because I love Jackie!” Shauna looks at Clara and, to her surprise, she’s sees no reaction on Clara’s face. “You’re… not weirded out that I love her?” Shauna asks.
“Why would I?” Clara says.
“But… but people say it’s wrong to love person who is the same gender as you.”
“And those people are wrong, Shauna.” Clara reassures her. “I am from the future, and people have been accepting towards same sex love. I even met wonderful people who are same sex couples.
“Trust me, Shauna. In the future, people will be free to love whoever they want. There might be some bumpy roads ahead between now and the time I live in, but your time will come.”
What Clara says to her made Shauna very much happy and hug her. “Thank you.” Shauna says to Clara as she hugs her. “So, you’re from the future. I know that it’s against the rules to say what’s going to happen in the future, but I want to know… how’s Liz Phair in the future?"
Clara feels embarrassed about what she knows about Shauna’s question. “Ooh! That is a rough one because in the year 2003, she releases an album that a lot of her fans really hate and accuse her as a sell out.”
“Really?” Shauna says disappointedly.
“But take my word, don’t get too riled up about it. I listen to it and it isn’t that much different as her first few albums.”
“Okay. I’ll take your advice.”
“And by the way, if, I mean when we get out of here,” Clara corrects herself, “there’s this artist called Fiona Apple who I think you’ll love.”
“Thanks, I’ll make note of that.”
Shauna and Clara’s conversation gets interrupted when they hear Jackie, with a jacket she found in the TARDIS wardrobe room, come in. Luckily, Jackie didn’t hear everything of they're talking about. “Alright, I’m ready.” Jackie says.
“For… what exactly?” Clara asks.
“To battle those alien angel statue things.”
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Of course I’m sure. I want to prove that I’m not weak as Shauna says.” Jackie tells Clara, with Shauna feeling guilty when she hears that. Jackie heads outside with Clara and Shauna following her with no objections.
Miles away from where Clara, Shauna, and Jackie are, The Doctor is being hold off by an unknown person after scavenging in the crash site. The Doctor puts his arms up and turns around to see Natalie holding a hunting rifle with Taissa next to her. Natalie and Taissa are out to look for Shauna after they noticed her leaving the cabin earlier that night.
“Woah! Don’t shoot! I’m here to help.” The Doctor exclaims as Natalie points the rifle closer to him.
“And why should we believe you?” Natalie says.
“I know how we can get out here.” The Doctor tells Natalie which makes her lower her rifle down.
“Okay, if you can get us out here, how are you going to do that?”
“With this.” The Doctor says and shows them the black box.
“Um, what is that?” Taissa asks.
“A tracking device. I found it damaged back on the plane site.”
“And how are you going to do that, bow tie? It looks like it's very broken beyond repair.” Natalie calls out.
“Oi! First off, bow ties are cool.” The Doctor remarks as he fixes his bow tie. “And second, I can use the spare parts for a machine.”
Natalie and Taissa don’t believe what The Doctor says and just shake their heads. “This isn’t going anywhere, Nat.” Taissa says before turning to The Doctor. “But now answer this, whoever you are: Where is our friend Shauna?”
“Shauna?” The Doctor says before remembering her. “Oh that’s right! That girl who I met just an hour ago. Don’t worry she’s perfectly safe.”
“Alright, prove it. Take us to her.” Natalie orders The Doctor.
Just before they head to the TARDIS, the three suddenly hear loud howling from wolves. “What is happening?” Taissa asks.
“Sounds like the wolves are coming for us.” Natalie answers. “And it sounds like they’re heading towards the cabin.”
“Van.” Taissa says as she remembers what happened to Van the last time she encountered wolves. She runs back to the cabin as fast as she can with Natalie and The Doctor following her.
Meanwhile, Clara, Shauna, Jackie are walking around the forest in hopes of seeing a Weeping Angel. Jackie walks next to Clara while Shauna mostly walks behind them because she is still ashamed to talk to Jackie. “You know I’m not entirely mad at Shauna.” Jackie tells Clara.
“I’m sorry, what?” A confused Clara says.
“I don’t know how to explain it. Outside, I want to be mad at her. But inside, a part of me is glad that Shauna found me.”
“Well that’s good for you.”
“It’s like… my affection towards her is at a new time high. It’s like how I wanted to love my boyfriend. And I never loved him the same way as Shauna. Or with any other boys back home.”
Clara tries to hide a smile from Jackie as if she remembers her conversation with Shauna back in the TARDIS. “When… we get out of this place, promise me to have a deep talk with Shauna.”
“Why would you make that suggestion?”
Clara smiles and shrugs pretending to not know what she’s talking about while also trying to hide her excitement. “Just instincts. But I can tell you that it just might change your life.”
The trio suddenly stops walking when they hear the same pack of wolves howling that The Doctor, Natalie, and Taissa heard miles away. “Where was that coming from?” Jackie asks.
“It sounds like it’s coming from the cabin.” Shauna answers. “We better get there before-”
“Shauna!” Clara shouts when a wolf suddenly pounces at Shauna.
Luckily the wolf didn’t attack Shauna but the wolf is in front of her snarling while she’s on the ground. Just as the wolf is ready to attack, Jackie stops the attack by hitting it with a large tree bark she found. Jackie didn’t kill it, but it was enough for the wolf to run away.
“You… you save me.” A distraught Shauna says.
“I still haven’t forgiven you yet. But that doesn’t mean that I want you dead.” Jackie tells Shauna before taking Shauna’s hand to pick her up. “Now come on. We have to help the others and get the hell out of here.” Shauna nods and the three sprint to the cabin.
Back in the cabin, the sounds of the wolves howling has awakened everybody up. When Van and Travis look out the window, they see many wolves surrounding the cabin with sight of an exit to escape. As they prepare to fight off the wolves with no signs of success, they hear a couple loud bangs which makes the wolves leave. Travis looks out and sees Natalie, holding the rifle, and Taissa returning with The Doctor.
When they’re inside, the first thing Taissa does is go to Van. “Hey, are you alright?” Taissa asks.
“I’m fine, Tai.” Van tells Taissa and hugs her. “But, who is that twee guy you brought back?”
“Right, I guess a proper introduction needs to be in place. Hello, I’m The Doctor, and I can help you all finally get out of this place.”
“You’re going to get us out of here?” Mari asks.
“That’s right.” The Doctor tells her, but Mari and a few others don't believe him.
“But how will you do that?” Mari tells The Doctor. “If Laura Lee couldn’t get us out of here, how will this be any different?”
“Because I got a plan.” The Doctor tells them. They are soon interrupted when Clara, Shauna, and Jackie arrive at the cabin. “Ah, Clara. You came here just in time.”
“Doctor, what happened?” Clara asks.
“A pack of wolves came here and almost attacked everyone here. But the girl with a rifle fired warning shots and they left.”
The cabin suddenly turns silent when everyone sees Jackie, alive and well. And some aren’t really happy to see her back. “Didn’t think you had the courage to bring yourself back here.” One of the Yellowjackets tells her.
Shauna feels the need to defend Jackie from the others, but Natalie beats her to it first. “Hey, now is not the time to throw Jackie out again.” Natalie says.
“She’s right.” Taissa joins Natalie. “She may not be a great person, but she still keeps us together. And we need her now more than ever.”
Seeing Taissa and Natalie defend Jackie and hearing what they say about her makes Shauna feel moved from all of this. Shauna then goes to their side and takes her turn in defending Jackie. “I might have said some harsh words, but Jackie stays with us and that’s final.” Shauna tells them.
Clara smiles at Shauna for defending Jackie while the other Yellowjackets besides Taissa and Natalie feel a bit dissatisfied that Jackie is staying. “Okay, if Shauna says Jackie’s staying, we’ll leave it at that.” Coach Ben tells them. “I’m just glad that this whole argument thing is all over. But we still have a bigger issue to face.”
“That’s where I come in.” The Doctor remarks.
The Doctor explains to the Yellowjackets who he is again, and tells him that he is an alien from the future which confuses some of the group. He tells them how he and Clara got into the forest and also how they found Jackie. The Doctor then explains to them about the Weeping Angels and how the Angels are trapping them in the forest.
“So this whole thing is kinda like The X-Files ?” Van remarks.
“Exactly like The X-Files .” The Doctor snaps his fingers. “Except a mad man with a blue box is going to stop the big bad aliens.”
“And how exactly are we going to do that?” Akilah asks. “You seem to be explaining why we’re here, but never explain the solution.”
“Good question. Our key to escape this place lies in her.” The Doctor points at Lottie and everyone is puzzled by what The Doctor means. “Jackie Taylor has told me that Lottie Matthews has visions. And she can help us see the invisible Angels.”
Lottie feels some uncertainty about what The Doctor says. “I don’t think I can help you, Doctor. My visions are too limited that I don’t think it can make them see the aliens.”
“I know, but I got something that might help your visions.” The Doctor reassures Lottie. “Now, everyone get into positions. I feel like the wolves are coming back here.”
“And how are the wolves related to those ‘Weeping Angels’?” Mari asks.
“A trimmed Weeping Angel can control any non-humanoid species if anyone tries to escape. And since the Angels know something suspicious is happening, they up the ante by deciding to kill you now instead waiting for all of you to go insane and kill each other later.”
“You heard The Doctor. Let’s move people!” Misty Quigley commands the Yellowjackets as if she’s The Doctor second-in-command.
“Now, Clara, stay here while I go and get something from the TARDIS.” The Doctor tells her and Clara nods.
30 minutes later, The Doctor returns with a lot of stuff that Clara is familiar with, but is unknown to the Yellowjackets. “What is that thing?” Taissa asks The Doctor.
“A crystal from Metebellis III.” The Doctor tells her. “I’m going to use it to enhance Lottie’s gift and help us see the invisible Weeping Angels.”
“And do you think it will work?” Natalie asks.
“Not yet, as long as I modify this black box.”
“And you never tell us what that thing is again.” Natalie says.
“Oh right. The black box is actually a flight tracker.” The Doctor explains. “It’s mostly used for flight controls to track planes. But the weird thing is that when I found it, it was damaged as if it was smashed by a person rather than the crash itself.”
Misty suddenly feels squeamish from what The Doctor says, which makes Natalie notice her. “Did you do something about the black box?” Natalie asks Misty.
“… Yes.” A guilty Misty answers.
“What the hell, Misty?! We would’ve gotten out here sooner if you didn’t break it!”
“I’m sorry! I did it because helping all of you makes me feel useful.”
“Oh that’s just great. Misty fucking Quigley cares more about being the leader of the pack than getting back home.”
“Oi! Stop it now!” The Doctor tells them. “You can blame Misty later, but we have more pressing concerns than caring about being popular.”
“So how are you going to use the flight tracker?” Taissa asks The Doctor.
“It’s impossible for someone to be invisible." The Doctor explains. "But mentally, we can. I’m using the crystal to help Lottie make anyone look invisible mentally, but I’m also using the flight tracker to help track the Weeping Angels.
“So you’re using that machine to track the invisible aliens by making yourself look like a ghost.” Natalie asks.
“Exactly. Now, I’m not going alone with Lottie to track them. I’m going to need both of you to tag along as well.” The Doctor tells Taissa and Natalie.
“Us? But why?” A bewildered Taissa asks The Doctor.
“Because this is a dangerous mission that two people won’t be enough. Now, Taissa Turner, from what I heard you have great skills to be a leader, and I want you to guide us when trouble is brewing. And Natalie Scatorccio, you have tough and grit that reminded me of an old friend of mine. Which is why I want you to ditch the rifle and have this.”
The Doctor gives Natalie a metal baseball bat, which kind of disappoints her. “Really? How is this more useful than a rifle?”
“I know. But this bat was used to fight even the most dangerous creatures in the universe. Which is why I’m giving it to you.”
Natalie then looks at the bat again and feels a sense of joy about what The Doctor says about it. “Wow. I never felt like this by holding a baseball bat, but thank you. I’ll gladly help you on this mission. Natalie tells The Doctor.
When The Doctor gets back to setting up the machine, he hears a knock and sees Lottie entering the room. “Um, Doctor, can I speak with you?” Lottie asks.
“Sure you can. I can talk and work at the same time.” The Doctor tells her while also working at the machine. “Now, what do you want to talk about?”
“I… I just don’t know I’m the right person to help you. I can’t seem to control what I see in my visions and they don’t even seem to lead to good things.”
“Hey, hey. Don’t beat yourself up to this.” The Doctor reassures her. “We don’t control what we see in the future. But sometimes, we can control who you are now.”
“But… why do you want me to help you?”
“Because you are both our guide to help where the Weeping Angels are, and also our tether to help us get back to the real world.
And also Lottie, you have a real gift that not a lot of people on Earth have. You may see bad things in your vision, but you may have the power to change things for the better.”
“You… you reminded me of Laura Lee. It’s too bad she isn’t here and won't be getting back home safely.” Lottie takes a moment to think and takes a deep breath. “Alright, I’ll help you Doctor.”
“Attagirl. Now I promise you that I will get you home safely.”
“I know.” Lottie tells him. “Before you arrive, I see visions that all of us are going to turn for the worst. But now, things are going to turn out okay.”
The Doctor tries to process what Lottie says to him, but decides to ignore it. “Okay. Glad you see things differently than before.” The Doctor tells her.
While The Doctor is building the machine, Clara and the other Yellowjackets (besides Mari and Akilah) are modifying the cabin to prepare for an attack. Jackie mostly ignores the other Yellowjackets since they still hold some contempt for her, but she doesn’t care. Shauna isn’t afraid to be with Jackie like earlier when she found her, but she honors Jackie’s wish of being alone at this time.
“So how are you feeling?” Van asks Shauna.
“Oh, I’m… fine I guess.” Shauna answers.
“That’s cool.” Van then looks at Jackie and sees how hard she is at working to protect the people around. “I don’t know what you did, but I like this new Jackie.” Van remarks.
“She’s not that different. Jackie’s just… taking my criticisms from yesterday at heart probably. She did save me from a wolf attack earlier.”
“That’s nice to hear. You know, I might’ve probably kicked her out again a second time for abandoning me in a burning plane. But if Taissa wants Jackie to stay, then I’m cool with her staying.” Van then notices Clara and wonders what she’s doing with them. “Hey you, Vogue magazine.” Van tells Clara, referring to her stylish clothes.
“Who me?” Clara asks.
“Yeah, what are you doing here? Are you with that Doctor guy? Are you two dating or-“
“God no!” Clara interrupts her. “I’m just a traveling partner of The Doctor.”
“Are you from the future? You must tell me something about the future.”
Clara doesn’t like what Van has asked her. “Nah, I can’t do that. I already told Shauna one thing about the future, and I don’t want to keep blurting out secrets.”
“Oh come one! You told Shauna one thing, why can’t I hear one?”
Clara groans and decides to think of one thing that isn’t consequential to tell. “Okay fine. Umm… in a few years, boy bands are gonna be popular again.”
“Aw, really?! I have to endure another wave of New Kids on the Block-like mania?!” Van remarks and Shauna laughs.
“I’m sorry but that’s true.” Clara tells Van.
Back inside, The Doctor finishes building his machine. There are a lot of wires connecting to the Metebellis crystal with four headgears setup. “Okay. A device capable enough for a trip of four. Now, before we go, who here has science as their favorite subject in school?” The Doctor asks Mari and Akilah. Akilah raises her hand and The Doctor gives her his Sonic Screwdriver. “Perfect. Your job is to keep checking on the machine in case something happens to it while we’re in some sort of deep sleep. I also want you to turn on the machine using my Sonic Screwdriver. All you have to do is press that button and point it at the machine.” The Doctor instructs Akilah before turning to Mari. “As for you, keep a lookout in case a wolf or other predatory animal comes in.” He tells Mari.
The Doctor, Lottie, Taissa and Natalie (with the baseball bat The Doctor gave her on tow) put on the headgear and await further instructions. “Is everyone ready?” Natalie says.
“I’m ready.” Lottie tells her.
“As do I.” Taissa says.
“Good. We’re good to go.” The Doctor says and nods over to Taissa.
“Alright, Akilah. Turn on the machine.” Taissa tells her.
Akilah presses the button of the Sonic Screwdriver and points it at the machine. Suddenly a bright light is shining from the crystal and then the cabin is experiencing some violent shaking. “Alright Lottie, I want you to use your vision to take us to the Angels.” The Doctor tells her.
“I’ll… try.”
Lottie then hears voices from something that isn’t human and follows it. When Lottie finally has a connection to where the voices are, the violent shaking stops and her, Taissa, Natalie, and The Doctor are unconscious. Akilah and Mari are a little scared because they now feel alone with the only person who can save them is not conscious.
“Let's hope they make it out alive.” Akilah tells Mari.
Somewhere, The Doctor, Lottie, Taissa, and Natalie’s minds are transported in what looks like the same forest they are in. “How are we outside?” Taissa asks.
“Lottie has transported us in the same astral plane where we can see the Weeping Angels clearly.” The Doctor answers. “Our physical bodies aren’t here, but our minds are. We can't die in here, but something happens to the Metebellis crystal, we will be transported back to the real world. But if our physical bodies are destroyed before something happens to Metebellis crystal, our minds are stuck here forever."
“So what’s the plan?” Lottie asks.
“Getting to see the Angels was the easy part. The hard part is forcing them to see each other.”
“And how are we going to do that?” Natalie asks.
“I don’t know, but here’s the basic plan.” The Doctor finds a stick and draws a big square around them. “This is where we should meet later and lure the Angels to look at each other. But word of warning: since we can see the Weeping Angels, it’s now dangerous for us to not look at them. They might not send you back in time like a regular Weeping Angel, but they can send you somewhere in this forest in order to throw us off from our plan. So whatever you do: don’t blink .”
Lottie, Taissa, and Natalie feel a little bit scared, but they also feel brave enough to face whatever comes their way. “Are there any other things we have to worry about besides those wretched statues?” Natalie asks while brandishing the bat.
“Yes, there are some creatures that only exists in this plane that the Weeping Angels might send us. They’re not that dangerous but the Angels can send them to slow us down.”
“I suggest we should split up and find those Angels.” Taissa says.
“Perfect plan.” The Doctor says. “Natalie, you go with Lottie. Taissa, you’re with me.” The three follow The Doctor’s plan and set off to find the Weeping Angels.
Clara and the rest of the Yellowjackets have finished setting the cabin up for protection against any predator coming to attack them. Shauna, Jackie, and the others are outside keeping an eye out on the forest while Akilah and Mari are inside guarding The Doctor. Now they wait for them to come.
“Is anyone ready?” Clara asks them and everyone nods to her in silence. “Good, cause I feel like they're coming right now.”
The group suddenly hears cowlings coming in their way. This time, the cowlings are louder and more vicious than the ones they hear from earlier and from the past night. Besides Travis with the rifle left behind from Natalie and Akilah with the Sonic Screwdriver, everyone doesn't have anything to protect themselves with the exception of a few small rocks and large tree branches strong enough to hit someone. Some of the Yellowjackets also set up traps around the cabin in case any of their weapons don't scare off the wolves.
When the first wave of animals arrive at the cabin, the Yellowjackets throw rocks at them. Some of the rocks manage to scare away a few wolves, but most of them aren't bothered by the small projectiles being thrown at them. A couple of the traps manage to stop the wolves from getting closer to the group by trapping them in large nets. Travis shoots a couple of warning shots in the air and most of the wolves run away from him.
Most of the Yellowjackets celebrates and do the Yellowjackets buzz chant when they thought the battle was over. “Hey it's nice that we're celebrating and all, but we still have company.” Van tells the group.
When everyone stops buzzing, they are surprised to see a large moose charging towards the cabin. Anyone who is on the moose's way manages to dodge it, but they see that the moose is actually going for the door. The moose's charge to the door is strong, but luckily the door manages to have minor scratches. Fortunately, Mari already barricaded the door with anything she could find after The Doctor told her what to do.
“How long do you think the door can hold?” Akilah asks Mari as they watch the moose trying to break in
“Not long.” Mari tells her. “There isn't enough in here to keep it from getting in.”
“Let's just hope The Doctor and the others find what they are looking for.” Akilah says.
Back in the astral plane, The Doctor and Taissa are continuing their walk around the forest looking for the Weeping Angels. “So how do you usually find a 'Weeping Angel'?” Taissa asks The Doctor.
“Oh they're not that hard to find. You'll mostly find them if they're just standing there as if they're crying.”
“Like those three over there?” Taissa points at what looks like three statues of a woman crying.
“Yes! But like I said, don't turn your eye away from them.” The Doctor instructs Taissa.
“Oh come on, what's the worst that can happen?” Taissa tells The Doctor while not looking at the Angels. When Taissa turns attention back to the Weeping Angels, she notices something different about them. “Wait, aren't those statues supposed to be crying?”
“Yes, that's why you shouldn't look away from them.”
Taissa turns her attention away from the Weeping Angel again when she sees something behind The Doctor. “Doctor, look out!”
The Doctor turns around and sees a Cyberman (the same kind of Cyberman The Doctor faced from Hedgewick's World of Wonders) attacking him, but The Doctor dodges it. “Okay, so that's what the Angels are sending to slow us down.” The Doctor remarks.
Taissa turns back to the Angels again, but she sees them looking at her and are coming closer to her when she first sees them. “Doctor, they are getting closer.”
“Just keep your eye on them!” The Doctor tells her while he dodges the Cyberman's blast.
The Cyberman turns its attention on Taissa while she has her eyes on the Weeping Angels, but luckily she dodges it. Unfortunately, that means Taissa has stopped looking at the Weeping Angels. When she sees them again, she now sees the Weeping Angels have a demonic look of blank eyes and fangs, and sharp claws in their hands coming towards her. "Doctor, I don't think this is working!" Taissa says.
While The Doctor is dodging the Cyberman, he finally has an idea on how to beat the Weeping Angels. "Hang on! Disregard what I said about not blinking."
“Are you crazy?!”
“No, listen to me. Walk backwards and keep close to my back. And as I walk, blink when I tell you to. That way we can lead them to the spot where we got here.”
“Are you sure it will work?”
“I don't know. The Weeping Angels might have the Cyberman follow us, but it might help so the Angels won't know our plans.”
“Okay. I hope you're right about this.” Taissa follows The Doctor's instructions and heads back to the square as the Weeping Angels and Cyberman follow them.
Miles away from where The Doctor and Taissa are, Lottie and Natalie are also looking for the Weeping Angels. Lottie is able to track them by using her psychic abilities to hear the voices of the Weeping Angels. “Do you know where those statues things are?” Natalie asks.
“We should be close. I can hear their voices getting louder.” Lottie tells her. When they get to the site of the plane crash, they see three Weeping Angels in their weeping position. “Remember what The Doctor says: don’t blink.”
“They don’t seem like a big threat. I can just smash them without any problems.” Natalie remarks.
But just as they are getting closer to the Angels, they hear two voices coming their way. “ALERT! ALERT! TWO HUMANOIDS DETECTED IN THE VICINITY!” one of the figures with a high robotic voice exclaims. "ALL NON-DALEKS SHALL BE EXTERMINATED!"
The two figures are revealed to be Daleks, who are sent by the Weeping Angels to stop Lottie and Natalie. “Well that’s just fucking great!" Natalie says. “The Angels sent two talking trash cans to stop us.”
One of the Daleks attack them, but luckily the two dodge the attack. Unfortunately, they kept their eye off the Weeping Angels and when Lottie looks at them again, the Angels are already closer and they have their demonic look and claws out.
“Nat, we better think of something quick!” Lottie says.
“Keep your eye on them while I deal with these robots.”
While Lottie keeps an eye on the Weeping Angels, Natalie keeps dodging the Daleks until she gets behind one of them. Because of their slow movement, Natalie is able to hit one of them with the baseball bat the Doctor gave her. "EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! DALEK UNDER ATTACK! REINFORCEMENTS ARE NEEDED!" one of the Daleks exclaim as Natalie attacks it. Natalie’s bat is able to take off the Dalek’s eye and its main weapon before she pushes it to the ground, unable to get up. Natalie tries to attack the other Dalek, but that one is a little faster than the one she knocks out.
“I can’t get the other one. Lottie, can you use your visions to see if anything can help us?”
Lottie nods at Natalie and tries to think as she controls her visions. Lottie then sees The Doctor and Taissa discussing their plan on how to get the Weeping Angels to their meeting area. “Nat, I think I’m able to find something.”
“Well spill it out.”
“Taissa and The Doctor are heading back. All you have to do is head back while I follow you there backwards. That way, we can lure the Angels there.”
“Well if you say it might work, then I’ll believe you just this once.” Natalie follows Lottie’s instructions and heads back to the area where the Doctor with Lottie (and the Weeping Angels) behind her while also having the Dalek follow them.
Back in the real world, Clara and the other Yellowjackets are trying to get the moose away from the door as it continues to ram the door open. But the rocks aren’t doing much to make the moose leave. Soon, they hear the wolves coming back to attack them. Some of the Yellowjackets throw some rocks at them while Travis uses his rifle to fire warning shots to make them leave, but that only makes them move slower rather than making them leave.
Suddenly, they see a large bear coming to the cabin. None of their weapons seem to work against the bear and it only makes it more angry. Jackie does the unthinkable and decides to attack the bear by herself. She grabs a large tree bark and hits the bear with it. It makes the bear stop coming to the cabin, it turns it’s attention to Jackie again. Jackie tries to attack it again, but the bear knocks the branch out of her hand which makes Jackie fall on her back. Jackie crawls backwards as the bear approaches to her, but she has nowhere to go to escape it. Jackie feels like she is done for until a rock is thrown at the bear’s face.
“Hey!” A familiar voice shouts at the bear. Jackie takes a look behind the bear and sees that it was Shauna who throws the rock at the bear. “If you want her, you have to go through me first.” Shauna taunts the bear.
The bear then charges towards Shauna, who doesn’t have anything to protect herself with. Jackie tells Shauna to run, but she doesn’t listen. Just as the bear is closer to Shauna, the bear falls right into a pit that Shauna designed earlier. Shauna looks down at the pit and sees the bear struggling to climb up from the pit. She then walks over to Jackie and picks her up.
“Thank… Thank you, Shauna.” Jackie says.
“Of course. That’s what best friends do.”
“I... I thought you would still be mad at me after how I treated you today. I know that you were really sorry and I should accept your apology. I hope that you accept mine as w-”
Shauna then interrupts Jackie by putting her finger on her lip. “I accept your apology. I should’ve been more open to you Jackie. The way I acted at you in the past few days is because I was afraid to tell you how much you mean to me in my life.”
“Gosh, Shauna. I know that we’ve been friends since like forever, but I don’t know what you m-”
“I love you Jackie!” Shauna interrupts Jackie again. “I love you since who knows how long.”
Jackie doesn’t say anything to her for a few moments, which makes Shauna a little bit scared. “Huh. You know, now that you mentioned it, it all makes sense now. I never had that much affection around the boys back home. Not even Jeff. But when I’m around you, I now understand why.” Jackie grabs Shauna’s hand and kisses her on the lips. The kiss is longer than their usual peck on the cheeks. Shauna feels the kiss like electricity and is what she imagines if she is with Jackie. “Now come on. We still have a lot of people to help.” Jackie tells Shauna after the kiss and heads back to the cabin to help the other Yellowjackets fight back against the animals attacking the cabin.
On the astral plane, The Doctor and Taissa arrive at their meeting place with the Weeping Angels and the Cyberman following them. At the same time, The Doctor spots Lottie and Natalie coming toward their way along with their Weeping Angels. “Ah! Lottie. Natalie. You made it just in time.” The Doctor remarks.
“Doctor, we have a major problem on our part.” Lottie tells him.
The Doctor looks behind Lottie and Natalie’s Weeping Angels and sees a Dalek following them. “Oh dear this is bad. Mind if we switch aliens, Natalie?” The Doctor asks. Natalie agrees and switches places with him as she now battles the Cyberman while The Doctor battles an old enemy. The Doctor leaps in front of the Dalek and presents himself to it. “Scan my body and identify what species I am.” The Doctor tells the Dalek.
The Dalek scans The Doctor and discovers that The Doctor has two hearts, which makes the Dalek tremble in fear mixed with anger from it. “YOU ARE A TIME LORD! YOU ARE AN ENEMY OF THE DALEKS!” The Dalek exclaims before it attacks The Doctor.
“Oh that never gets old.” The Doctor remarks as he dodges the Dalek’s attack.
Natalie meanwhile manages to have an easier time battling the Cyberman than the Daleks. Natalie uses the bat to smash the Cyberman and destroy it entirely. “Huh. I am starting to like this thing.” Natalie jokes.
When Natalie gets back with the others, The Weeping Angels have completely surrounded them with a way out. “Now what do we do?” Taissa asks.
“We blink one more time.” The Doctor instructs them. “And by my signal, Lottie, I want you to bring us back to the real world.”
“I can try.” Lottie tells him.
The four blink just as The Doctor tells them, and the Weeping Angels are much closer to them to the point where the Angels are almost squishing them. Unfortunately, the Dalek is right next to them and is preparing to attack them.
“Now, Lottie!” The Doctor shouts.
Lottie uses her head to get them out of the astral plane, but it is difficult for her to do so she starts to scream as if it’s almost frying her brain. Just as the Dalek yells “EXTERMINATE”, the four disappears.
Back in the real world, Mari and Akilah are pushing numerous objects against the door trying their best to keep the moose from getting inside. Just as it seems the moose is about to get in, the ramming suddenly stops. Mari and Akilah are confused and then turn to see The Doctor, Taissa, Natalie and Lottie waking up.
“Is it over?” Taissa asks.
“Only way to find out.” The Doctor tells her.
The Doctor, Taissa, Natalie, and Lottie head outside to see if their plan works. Luckily, the wolves and the bears had already left the cabin the same time as the moose stopped ramming the door. Clara, Shauna, Jackie, Mari, and Akilah follow them as well to see what The Doctor and the others did in the astral plane. When they arrive on the spot where The Doctor told them to meet in the astral plane, they see six Weeping Angels, still in their demonic form, looking at each other.
“Doctor, how can we see them?” Clara asks.
“They’re permanently quantum locked.” The Doctor tells her. “When they look at each other, all of their powers are gone. Invisibility, control over animals, preventing us from leaving. Everything. Now they're as harmless as any other statues.”
“Should I smash them?” Natalie eagerly asks The Doctor.
“No, let’s leave them like that. I’ll have the proper people to handle them.”
“Does this mean we can finally leave this place?” Akilah asks.
“Oh yeah, you can rest assured that you can finally go home.” The Doctor tells them without hesitation.
Hearing what The Doctor says makes everyone cheer and hug each other on the thought of coming back home. Taissa and Van even have a celebratory kiss and don’t even care that people are watching.
For Shauna and Jackie, going back home also means a new chapter for them. They hold each other’s hands as they look at the now harmless Weeping Angels. “You know that Jeff would be a terrible father for your baby.” Jackie tells Shauna. “But I’ll be happy to raise your child with you.”
“What?! Are you serious?!” Shauna says.
“I’m serious Shauna. Even though we’ll be going to different colleges, I’ll always be there with you and your… erm I mean our child.” Shauna kisses Jackie and Jackie puts her head on Shauna’s shoulders while Clara quietly looks at them, happy that they’re not fighting anymore.
By morning, the military organization known as UNIT had arrived in the forest thanks to a phone call from The Doctor. Every member of the surviving Yellowjackets team received medical attention they need from UNIT’s medical team after months they spent in the forest. Van and Coach Ben need to be looked after the most due to Van’s wolf attack and Coach Ben’s amputated leg. UNIT even asks some of the Yellowjackets questions about what they saw and what they experienced in the forest. Misty, however, keeps pestering UNIT about how much she knows about treating people and military conducts.
The Doctor visits Taissa, Natalie, Mari, and Akilah, who all had minor to no injuries that they just hang around and talk with one another. “Why didn’t you just take us back home with your spaceship?” Mari asks The Doctor.
“Yeah, I thought about doing that. But it will be difficult for any of us to explain to people how a missing high school sports team mysteriously reappears in America."
“Touché.” Akilah says.
“Luckily, these military people are old friends of mine and they can take you home when all of you are well enough. And I also put in a good word with the higher ups about any of you interested in joining UNIT. You experienced some bravery and thinking skills last night that I think you’d be good enough for UNIT.”
The group feels skeptical about the offer at first, but they all agree to take the offer. “That would be good on my résumé.” Taissa says.
“I’m okay with learning more about space and aliens.” Mari says.
“Oh, and Akilah. If you’re still working with UNIT in the future, I would like you to meet with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. She will lead UNIT and will prioritize science over military.” The Doctor tells her.
“Okay, I’ll do that.” Akilah says.
“And Natalie, I know that you don’t like the idea of joining the military, but they are not like any other military. UNIT is independent from any country and they mostly fight aliens rather than be at war with any other countries.”
Natalie feels hesitant at first about joining UNIT, but agrees to take The Doctor’s offer. “Hey, if it means that I can battle more aliens, then I’m down with joining.” Natalie remarks. “Oh, and I suppose you want this back then.” Natalie gives The Doctor the baseball back, but he gives it back to her.
“Oh you can keep it. I got another one back in my ship that I can remember my old friend by.”
“Oh. Well… geez. I don’t know what to say, but thanks by the way.” Natalie tells The Doctor and he high fives her.
At another medical area, Jackie is being treated for temperature after being left out in the cold two nights before with Shauna by her side. UNIT’s medical team asks Shauna to wait since she doesn’t have any significant injuries, but Shauna insists that she stays by Jackie’s side and UNIT lets her. Earlier, The Doctor offered Shauna and Jackie to join UNIT, but they politely decline because Shauna wants to follow her writing dream while Jackie wants to take things a little easy after what happened to her. During their time in bedrest, the two don’t talk that much since Shauna is busy with writing in her journal, but Jackie doesn’t mind since Shauna is with her.
“Do you think your mom will mind that we’re dating?” Jackie asks Shauna.
“Of course she won’t mind, Jackie.” Shauna reassures her. “In fact, I think she will be very supportive since she likes you. I wouldn’t say the same about your parents though.”
Jackie groans at the thought of her parents. “Ugh, you’re right! I can already imagine what they’re going to say when I tell them. But I don’t care. I don’t have a good relationship with them anyway.”
Their quiet time is met with another ray of sunshine when Clara walks towards their medical tent. “Hey, how are you two doing?” Clara asks them.
“Doing great actually.” Jackie replies. “The medics told me that I can get out of bed for just one more hour.”
“That’s good to hear. It’s also nice to see you be happy together again.”
“Well it wouldn’t happen without your help.” Shauna tells her, which makes Clara confused by that statement.
“I’m sorry, my help?”
“Yeah, your talks from last night helped us to express our true feelings. And how the future is going to be bright for us.”
“Well… thank you. I’m glad that I was able to help you guys. Oh, by the way, before I leave, I just want to give you guys this.” Clara says as she gives them a small folded piece of paper. Shauna opens it and she sees digits of numbers written on it. “When you get to the week of 23 November 2013, call me with this number and maybe we can talk about what you’ve been doing since today.”
“Well, thank you. We promise that we’ll call you in 2013.”
“Good to know. Catch you guys later. Oh, and Shauna, remember what I said about Fiona Apple.” Clara tells her as she heads to the TARDIS.
“Who’s Fiona Apple?” Jackie asks.
“Oh, just some artist that Clara thinks I might like.” Shauna replies and Jackie just nods along to her answer.
Meanwhile, as The Doctor heads back to his TARDIS, Lottie spots him and stops to talk to him. “Oh, Doctor. I need to talk to you.”
“Oh, hey Lottie. I hope you can control your vision well. And don’t worry, I’m sure UNIT has a good program on visions.”
“I just want to say thank you. But I also want to tell you that I saw a vision regarding you.”
The Doctor feels a little bit scared thinking that it might be another prediction regarding Trenzalore. “Okay. Let’s hear it.” The Doctor reluctantly says.
“Don’t worry, Doctor. This vision is a positive one, I swear. In my vision, I saw that your pain from the past that you’ve been trying to run away from will finally be healed. And with the help from a past ‘warrior’ that you’ve been hiding away in your memory.”
The Doctor doesn’t understand Lottie’s prediction except for the part of the “warrior”, but The Doctor just accepts Lottie’s prediction with some sense of skepticism. “Okay… thank you. I’ll be heading off now.” The Doctor says and Lottie waves goodbye as he leaves.
When The Doctor arrives back at the TARDIS, he sees Clara outside waiting for him. “Well that was a fun adventure.” Clara remarks.
“I agree. Just glad that everyone lives this time. I don’t know what might’ve happened if we didn’t come.” The Doctor says as he unlocks the TARDIS. “So, still game for that Hollywood vacation?”
“I would’ve said no considering what we’ve been through yesterday. But my new job starts in about a week so I need a little stress relief.”
“Okay. Hollywood, here we come!” The Doctor says as he pulls the lever of the TARDIS. And this time, the TARDIS is able to leave the forest.
