Work Text:
Remus was fighting Dolohov. That was the last thing they remembered when the purple flames streaked from Dolohov’s wand and struck them in the chest. The next thing Remus knew, they were floating. Remus knew the war wasn’t over, but the peace they were feeling was pervasive. They could tell there was somewhere they needed to be and as soon as that thought entered their head, Remus was suddenly in the Hogwarts they remembered as a student. The war was slowly becoming a distant memory as Remus began to realise that the curse Dolohov had thrown at them had been deadly. When Remus entered the Great Hall, they saw James, Lily, and Sirius sitting at the Gryffindor table waiting for them to join. They smiled, the feeling of peace becoming even more apparent. They had just started to walk toward their friends when they heard someone come in behind them. Turning, Remus saw Tonks entering the Great Hall. Remus’s stomach dropped, and two thoughts immediately sprang up in their head: One, how would they tell Sirius about Tonks? And two, what would happen to Teddy? Remus realised almost instantly that Sirius wouldn’t care about that first thought, not anymore. Sirius knew that Remus loved him and would always love him. They had long ago decided that it didn’t serve either of them to be jealous and possessive. And besides, Tonks had been there for Remus after Sirius had died and their love for Sirius was no less than their love for Tonks; it was a different kind of love, the kind that always had room for more. The second thought that they had made Remus panic for a moment before they remembered that Harry and Andromeda would be there for Teddy and no matter what, Teddy would have someone who loved him. Once Remus had made these decisions, they waited for Tonks to catch up and then continued walking toward their friends.
When they made it to the table, the five of them looked at each other and the peace that Remus had been feeling since the moment they arrived settled fully into place. James and Lily ran forward to embrace Remus. “Thank you for watching over him,” Lily whispered in their ear, “You were there when he needed you most.” James was smiling, simply happy to have his two best friends back again. Remus looked over James’s shoulder at Sirius and saw that he had moved to embrace Tonks. Sirius’s lips moved as he said something to Tonks and xe smiled. Remus had known that they had nothing to worry about, but it was still a relief seeing the two of them getting along. They talked for a moment longer before Tonks sent Sirius over to join Remus, James, and Lily. Xe watched the four of them with a smile before walking over to the Hufflepuff table to greet xyr own friends.
Remus then noticed that the Gryffindor table had begun to fill with other familiar faces, from their time as a student and as a professor. They saw Marlene and Dorcas holding hands, the Prewett twins were talking very excitedly with Fred Weasley, and Lavender Brown looked to still be in shock. They saw that the other tables had begun to fill up as well. James and Lily were motioning for someone from the Slytherin table to come join them and Tonks was talking with xyr old mentor, Mad-Eye Moody, along with some others. Remus looked back to the Slytherin table to see who James and Lily were motioning to and was surprised to see Regulus walking towards them. James and Lily, seeing that Remus was confused, said, “Reg turned against Voldemort in the end and gave his life to stop him. He tried to warn us about Peter too, but someone,” they glared at Sirius, “let his pride get in the way of the message.” Sirius had the decency to look ashamed, but it was all said in a way that put the whole matter in the past. Reg came up to the group and Remus greeted him as a friend. They talked for a long time.
Suddenly, James, Lily, Sirius, and Remus all felt a pull towards something and knew that Harry needed them all one last time. And so they went to him. Remus could see the look on James and Lily’s faces, a look that Remus could only now understand - the love for your child. This thought came at the same time that Harry mentioned Teddy and Remus knew that they should be more distraught, but Teddy would have people and Teddy would understand one day. It would be okay. Teddy would be okay. The four of them gave Harry the words that he needed to hear in that moment and stayed with him for as long as they could. When it was time for them to leave, they could rest easy in the knowledge that everything and everyone they had left behind would be safe. The four of them looked at Harry one last time with all the love that they could possibly feel, knowing that they had done everything they could for him and that it was time for them to finally rest in peace.
