Chapter Text
The strong scent of coffee grounds filled both your nose, and your kitchen as you prepared for the morning ahead of you.
You turned the faucet on, plates and bowls clattering in the sink as you washed them. You mentally scolded yourself for not cleaning them the night before, seeing as you were on a tight schedule for work. You couldn’t just waste time washing things constantly.
You had a busy day ahead of you, and you were hoping for a promotion by the end of the month. Coming into work late was not on your agenda if you wanted a pay raise. At the end of the day, the electric and water bill weren’t going to pay for themselves; you needed the extra cash.
As you dried off a few utensils, and rinsed your hands of any soap residue that happened to be on them, you could’ve sworn you heard a faint knock on your door.
That was weird, you weren’t expecting anyone over at your apartment today. Maybe you had just made up the noise in your head. It certainly wouldn’t have been the first time you’d done that.
Knock, Knock, Knock.
That wasn’t you making it up. Someone was knocking on your door at seven thirty in the morning.
Shutting off the water, you dried your hands while you made your way over to the living room. “Who is it?” You called.
No answer. Wonderful. It was probably some teen delinquent who thought meddling with someone’s day was a good form of entertainment. That, or a salesperson. Neither of those options were something you wanted to get involved with right now.
“Look, I know it’s early, but can you please just let me-“ you stopped in your tracks as you opened the door.
No salesperson, no reckless kid trying to pass the time, nothing. No one was there. You stepped out of your apartment, your foot thumping against something.
Peering down to see what you kicked, you eyed a strange cardboard box on your welcome mat. You didn’t remember placing an order on anything. You leaned down, and grabbed ahold of it. It was light, and as you shook it you couldn’t seem to hear anything rattling inside.
Maybe you had just forgotten that you bought whatever was in the package. Yeah, that’s probably what it was.
Bringing the box with you into your apartment, you placed it down next to the coffee table in your living room. You could come back to it after you’d finished the dishes.
While making your way to the kitchen, you thought you heard something clatter behind you. More than likely the box falling over, you thought to yourself absentmindedly as you shrugged it off.
Your kitchen still smelled of fresh coffee when you returned, but the cup you’d brewed for yourself had already cooled by the time you got to it. You sighed in disappointment, placing the mug into the microwave. Reheated coffee would have to do for today, you supposed.
Once ready, you prepared the warm drink however way you wanted that day, and took a whiff of it. Perfectly made, not too sweet, not too bitter, just the thing to wake up you for work.
The kitchen door squeaking without warning behind you caught your attention, but the voice that followed jolted you back to your wits.
“Hello.” A smooth, masculine voice began.
Whirling in shock, you were met with the face of a man you’d seen all to frequently at your office.
“My name is Google-Alpha, how may I assist you today?”
