Work Text:
Martin
I was in Corey's office that night. Corey sat behind his desk. The wisteria flowers grew behind him. The candles flickered dimly.
I was supposed to rewatch the Saw movies with Kaede. But Sid and Clown took me to see Corey here because he wanted to ask me about what I saw that night. I guess he was curious. Or maybe he didn't really care that I was going to hang out with Kaede.
Speaking of the Saw movies, my favorite ones are the first one and the second one. The third one was wack and not wasn't as good, but Kaede likes it for some reason.
"Martin!" Corey barked.
I jumped.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Can you tell me what happened that night?" Corey asked.
Corey's a really cool dude who hangs out in his office a lot. He wears a mask with dreads sticking out from the top of it. While his actual hair is sticking out from the mask. (Whether the hair on the top of his mask are extensions or not, I'll never know.) Says he's seen things that no one else has. He's like that really cool veteran guy who tells you his stories. I want to be like him someday and he'd say, "One day, you'll be even better than me Martin."
"Martin?" Corey asked.
I said nothing.
Corey was quiet, waiting for my response.
"Why do you want to know?" I asked, my voice low.
"Come on Martin, everyone tells me their stories. Whether you believe what you saw or not, that is up to you," Corey said, sitting back.
I nodded. "It was nighttime. I was alone."
"Do you remember where you were?" Corey asked.
"No. I couldn't see anything, it was too dark," I said.
Corey nodded. "Go on."
I continued, "I remember walking down this little path. There were a few streetlights in front of me. Some were broken, others were still working."
"What did you see that night?" Corey asked.
"I saw a lowrider. A white one."
Corey made a face. "A lowrider? In the middle of nowhere?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
"Do you remember seeing anyone there?" Corey asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you remember seeing anyone driving the car?" Corey explained.
"No. The windows were all dark."
"Then what happened?"
"The car turned on."
Corey's eyes widened. "By itself?"
"Yeah. I was right in front of it. Then I heard the engine and the car's lights turned on."
"What else happened?" Corey asked.
"I was walking away. Then I heard the car behind me."
Corey narrowed his eyes. "It was following you?"
"Yeah. I'm not sure why or how but it really scared me," I said, looking down.
"What did you do?" Corey asked.
"I did what I could. I ran," I said.
"Then what happened?"
"I eventually made it home. I told my dad. He didn't believe me. I went to see the car again..."
"Something wrong? Why'd you stop?" Corey asked, who I could tell was invested.
"Sorry, I still can't wrap my head around what happened. When I went to see the car the next day... It wasn't there," I said.
"What?" Corey said, bewildered. "And how old were you when you saw this?"
Nine. I was nine.
"I-I-I-I shit!" I spat. For some reason, my mouth had other plans.
Corey showed no frustration. Patiently, he said, "It's okay, take your time."
I didn't say anything.
"If it makes you feel better, I believe you," Corey said.
"You do?" I asked.
"Yeah. Your dad may not believe you, but I do," Corey said.
"Thanks, Corey."
I got behind the desk and hugged him.
