Work Text:
Phoenix Wright found himself stumbling back to his office, handles of their bike in hand. Another trial and yet another treacherous walk home due to his legs being too tired to petal. It wasn’t always like this. Ever since getting into the DL-6 case and trying to help his best friend, Miles Edgeworth, they’ve been so worn out. Tired, and just wanting all of this to finally be over. They promised justice, and justice is exactly what will be served. Especially for someone he dearly cares about. How could anyone call Miles a demon when he was quite the opposite? An angel even? Their judicial assistant, I suppose, sister of the late Mia Fey, let him in.
“Nick, you’re sopping wet.” They look displeased. Phoenix realizes he was walking in the pouring rain this whole time. “At least take your shoes off before you scuff up the floor.” They oblige, nodding, “M’ sorry Maya. Today has been so long. Every day is so long. I just want to change things and I feel so powerless. I feel so powerless and… Where am I even going with this?” They squeeze the bridge of their nose. Maya now having a concerned look on xyr face, “Nick, you work so hard. Give yourself some credit. You act like this’d be easy for anyone. I know you love Miles but we will get through this! Just like we have time and time again.” Maya puts a reassuring hand on Phoenix’s shoulder before telling him burgers are out in the kitchen.
Phoenix now finds themselves on the couch with Maya trying to do anything at all to pass the time. Xe put on The Steel Samurai. Phoenix enjoyed hearing Maya ramble about xyr special interest, and regularly would listen to xyr rambles on the way to investigations. Tonight being a seemingly troublesome night for Phoenix, Maya would do anything to help him feel better. They only knew of one thing that would cure his sadness, “Hey Nick, how about we go see Edgeworth?” Phoenix perks up, but then slumps down, “It’s nine. They close at 10, we would ne-”, that’s when the screeching of tires, and a car that sounds like it hit something comes pulling up. The cursing in German is all Phoenix needed to hear to know exactly who it was. Maya snorts, “Aaand.. There he is.” Phoenix is shocked. How the hell did Maya convince Franziska to not only take Miles’ expensive ass car, slightly wreck it, and take them to see Miles? Before Phoenix could have any of these questions answered, Maya was dragging him into the backseat and Franziska had his head on the steering wheel while talking in mixes of German and English, “Maya, Liebe, schatz, honig even. You are lucky I love you. As for the fool in the back, they would be foolish to ask me for this favor themselves. Now let’s go before I fall asleep at the wheel.” Phoenix was now very much wide awake and attempting to hold in their laughter, as Franziska had the cheesiest Steel Samurai pajamas on. They were obviously a gift from Maya as Franziska doesn’t show much interest in the series, but it was sweet yet so hilarious to see Franziska speeding in Steel Samurai pajamas.
The radio is blasting, and the rain has stopped. It is humid yet cool and Phoenix feels nothing but anxiety and comfort at the thought of being able to talk to Miles. It was only a 5 minute drive down to the jailhouse, but a drive that felt like it lasted forever finally came to a stop. Franziska, pecking a kiss on Maya’s lips, and sweetly mentioning how he would be back in about 45 minutes, drives off into the distance without even a single mention to Phoenix. He didn’t necessarily mind though, as Franziska was clearly enamored with their partner in the moment.
Phoenix sluggishly walking into the station asks to see Miles. They are taken back into the visitor room where Miles is found sitting, “Wright, why are you coming to see me so late? You look so tired..” A genuine look of care and concern is spread across the man's face, which is enough for Phoenix’s heart to burst out of his chest, but Phoenix is able to hold back this slight blush that is spread across their face, “I just.. I Need to see you. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. There’s practically no other feeling I need right now other than knowing you are alright.” Miles’ eyes widened. He turns his face and is slightly smiling, “Sleeping has been quite troublesome, but knowing that you are going to vouch for me is enough reassurance in the end.” Phoenix finds himself smiling as well, turning his face, “Well, you are my best friend. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you, you know?” Miles’ eyes darted to the other side of the room, “Well yes of course, of course.”, Miles looks up again after a few seconds only to realize the tension that has been created in the room, and Maya has the widest smirk on their face. Phoenix takes a deep breath, “Edgeworth, I know this is hard. But you know we’re going to get through this until the very bitter end, right? No matter what we have to do.” Phoenix places a few fingers on the bottom of the thick glass separating them. Miles sighs, “You know there will never be a logical argument to prove my innocence. Wright, I appreciate you-” Phoenix interjects, “Miles. I know you’re innocent and that’s all I need to win this.” Miles is stunned. He goes silent and sighs once more, “Wright.. Phoenix wright..” He holds a hand up to his face before his eyes widen and he turns his face in both directions, “Phoenix i.. I love you. And thank you.” The words rang through Phoenix’s ears before he covered his face with both hands, “Miles, I.. I love you too.” The two stared at each other with longing expressions before Miles chuckled, “Well, Phoenix Wright, you should be getting along now. It’s nearing closing time.” Phoenix clears their throat, “Well, Miles Edgeworth, I guess I will be seeing you soon.” Phoenix giggles and Miles scoffs and rolls his eyes, “Until then Phoenix.” Phoenix nods and wishes the man a goodnight.
On the way home, Maya is recounting the events to Franziska and he is laughing like he’s insane. Maya is recounting the events as if they kissed or something. Not like Phoenix would have minded that, but Maya is going crazy telling Franziska about what happened. It makes Phoenix wonder what other things Maya tells Franziska..
Finally back home, Franziska wishes the both of them a goodnight before driving off. Maya and Phoenix step inside and Maya turns around and asks, “Are you feeling better?” Phoenix smiles, “Yes Maya, I am feeling a lot better, thank you.” Maya hugs Phoenix before excusing themselves to bed. Phoenix, finally feeling a sense of relief for the first time in days, is able to sleep peacefully.
