Work Text:
Veronica knew JD had his fair share of bad days. As much as he tried to hide it, she could read him like an open book.
Today was one of those days— she tried asking him what was wrong, but after insisting he was fine multiple times she stopped pressing and just gave him as much comfort as she could. She hated seeing him sad, though, so she decided to do something nice for him that would hopefully put a smile on his face. It was getting close to 12 am so she wasn’t sure he was even awake, but when she peeked through his window she saw him sitting on his bed with a book. She tapped on the glass lightly to get his attention.
“Hi,” he smiled as he opened the window. He always did when he saw her. “It’s late, shouldn’t you be asleep?”
She shook her head. “I was up late finishing some homework. And… I know you had a bad day, so I made you cookies.” she took the small box out of her purse and handed it to him. He sighed.
“Ronnie… you really didn’t have to do that.”
“Stop that, yes I did.” she took his hand and sat on the bed, patting the spot next to her with her free hand. He sat down next to her. “Look… I know you don't want to talk about things that are bothering you sometimes and that’s fine, I’m not gonna force you to. But I know when something’s wrong and I want you to feel like you can talk to me. You shouldn’t have to deal with everything alone.” he sighed again and scooted closer to her. She pulled him closer with an arm around his waist and he leaned into her.
“My dad came home super drunk last night,” JD admitted quietly. “That wasn’t a surprise, he gets drunk almost every night, but he was really drunk this time. And I guess he was in one of those moods because he decided to take it out on me. I don’t even know why it upset me so much, he’s been doing this since I was nine. But I just started thinking and— I make him food, I pay the bills, I clean the house, I let him drag me across the country every other month with absolutely no complaints and he can’t even treat me with an ounce of respect. I’m so fucking sick of it.” he let out a shaky breath as Veronica wiped away a few tears he hadn’t even realized had fallen.
“You deserve so much better,” she whispered, kissing him. “I’m so sorry he treats you that way.”
“It’s fine,” he muttered.
“It’s not.”
“Yeah, I know.” he rested his forehead on hers. “Sorry. I’m not really used to the whole ‘people caring about me’ thing.” she kissed him again.
“It’s okay, I get it. Now please try the cookies. Turns out they’re very difficult to make at 11 pm while tired and trying not to wake your parents.” he laughed and took a bite. His eyes widened.
“Oh my god, maybe I should be sad more often. This is the best cookie I’ve ever eaten.”
They stared at each other for a moment before bursting into laughter. “Thanks babe,” she giggled into his chest. “But you don’t have to be sad to get these, you know. I’d make you cookies any day.”
“Please do. Because holy shit, first the brownies and now these? You’re an amazing baker.”
Veronica giggled again, happy that they could focus on this now and not all the sad stuff. As their laughter faded they laid down on the bed, JD holding her close and her wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Your parents mind you staying over?” he mumbled, only half awake.
“They won’t notice I’m gone,” she responded just as sleepily. “And either way, it’s worth it for you.” he kissed her forehead.
“Mkay. Goodnight baby.”
“I love you,” she whispered.
“Love you too.”
