Lifeline

Summary:

He kept her alive. Short one shot.

Work Text:

Kyoko could never break Rei. Perhaps that was why she felt the way she did about him. She had tried, over and over. She could see his despair. She could see how the death of his parents and sister affected him. Yet he was always just out of her reach. Those green eyes, so deep and full of sorrow. She could see the depression lingering there. Never healing. Always present. And still she could never affect him.

But she was broken. Broken into a million pieces. All because of Masamune Goto. And so she went to Rei, time after time.

He was so kind. The only kindness she could find in this horrible world.

Skillfully climbing through the window, she hopped down from the sill lightly. Rei stirred underneath the blankets and she froze, whispering fiercely, “Don’t say anything.” He did not move again. She slipped into his bed behind him and held him to her, letting the pain sear painfully in her chest. Soon Rei’s shoulder was wet with her tears.

She couldn’t sleep. She never could on nights like these. But for Rei’s sake, she pretended to drift off. Only then did he move, turning onto his back and gently stroking her hair. The gesture made pain shoot through her again, but it also soothed her. Suddenly, she felt the sting of tears welling up again.

She hated herself. Her anger had hurt Rei too many times to count, and he still cared. She wanted to punish herself for everything she had done. Her body filled with rage at herself and she wanted to throw herself off the top of a building.

But she lay still, breathing deeply, letting Rei comfort her.

He kept her alive.
