Rabbit scuttled about his home making last minute preparations for his guests. Already he’d looked about his home and found it lacking. His couch, while comfortable, was a light blue with hideously yellow flowers all over it, and none of the woods on his furniture matched either. His place mats on the table were all from different sets, and all of his dishware were second hand. Rabbit had come to the sudden and inescapable conclusion that his home looked less ‘lived in’ and more ‘hodgepodge.’ Deciding there was nothing that could be done about that, his cousin and aunt were to arrive in only a few short hours, he grabbed a feather duster and re-dusted the shelves and books on his book case, the coffee table placed in front of the couch, and every flat surface Rabbit could reach.
A sharp rap at the door alerted Rabbit he’d gotten lost in trying to dust and had forgotten completely to heat a kettle of water for tea. Quick as any bunny could, Rabbit threw the duster into the vase he liked to hide it in and answered the door. Of course, this was aided by the vase being right by said front door.
There were four animals gathered in front of Rabbit’s door. The first was a rabbit with tawny fur just starting to go grey, with a small and completely white rabbit to her left. Just behind the two were an owl with grey and white feathers, and a squirrel with the fluffiest fur Rabbit had ever seen.
”Dorothy!” Rabbit greeted his cousin, the tawny bunny, with a hug, and then pulled the other bunny in for a hug, “Aunt Sophia! It’s so good to see you both!”
”Oh look at you Rabbit,” Dorothy grinned widely, “You haven’t changed one bit.”
”Are you blind?” Sophia asked her daughter, “Clearly he’s gotten older and taller since we last saw him.”
”Oh Sophia,” Rabbit rested his hands on Sophia’s shoulders, “I really, truly have missed you.”
”Relax,” Sophia brushed Rabbit off her as she entered his home, “You’re already in the will.”
”Rabbit have you met my friends yet?” Dorothy asked, “The owl is Rose.”
”It’s a pleasure to meet another farm folk.” Rose greeted.
"It's really just a vegetable garden," Rabbit demured, "But thank you."
"And this is-" Dorothy was cut off by the squirrel who until moments prior had been preening herself.
"Blanche Devereaux. A pleasure to make your aquatance." The squirrel reached a hand out, palm down, which Rabbit turned into a rather awkward handshake.
"A pleasure to be sure," Rabbit replied politely, "Where you all planning on staying the night?"
"You mean I can stay here if I want?" Sophia asked.
"Ma!" Dorothy scolded, "We don't want to cause an imposition."
"Oh no," Rabbit replied, "You're family, it wouldn't be an imposition at all. It's a small house through, so a few of you might need to share a room."
"Oh, Dorothy and Rose can share a room,' Sophia told Rabbit.
"It'll be just like at home," Rose added.
Dorothy gave Rose an unimpressed stare before making herself comfortable on Rabbit's couch.
"I'm sorry ladies," Rabbit said, remembering himself, "Please have a seat."
Lunch was a gorgeous salad made from vegetables Rabbit had collected from his garden.
