“Kimmie, was our house always like this?” Shego asked as she tilted her head up to look at the towering trees all around where their home had been. They were tree like enough to be called trees, but they weren’t identifiable as any tree that had ever been seen on Earth before. There was trees with zebra striped leaves, trees with watermelons growing from the branches, some of the trees made barking noises every time a car drove by.
“No, no, it wasn’t,” Kim said.
They both looked at each other. They had left Drakken alone at home as they’d gone out to take care of poachers. He didn’t like leaving the house when he was in heat. Finding some experiment had gotten out of hand wasn’t unusual, so they weren’t worried about his safety, but this was an especially impressive display.
“Let’s try and get inside,” Kim said.
When the two women started walking from the sidewalk towards where the house should be, the trees pulled away to let them through, snapping back in place behind them. When they got to the house, the windows and doors were wide open, with tree branches and roots going in and out.
“Drakken?”
“Dr. D?”
The two of them called out as they moved into the house, heading towards the middle.
“Welcome home,” Drakken said. He was in a bed of the softest grasses, with a circle of roots around forming a cozy nest. “I did some remodeling while you were gone.” He patted the grass on either side of him. “Why don’t you come and join me?”
“It looks wonderful,” Kim said as she stepped over the roots and sat down next to Drakken so that he could cuddle up close to her.
Shego sighed but was smiling as she joined them. “If anybody finds out about the cuddling, I’ll make both of you regret it.” She sat on Drakken’s other side, close enough that he could cuddle with her too.
