Chapter Text

When in love, the sight of the beloved has a completeness that no words and no embrace can match.

This is what Weiss had written at the top of her book at the beginning of the last lesson of the school year. She had written nothing since; she had been consumed with love for the girls at the front of the class.

The first, head on the desk, books closed, was Ruby, staring at the clock, watching the seconds tick by.

The second, writing down everything the teacher said, was Penny, not missing a word.

These were the girls Weiss loved the most. Totally different, yet totally in love. And they loved Weiss too.

A shrill bell interrupted Weiss’ thoughts. Her musings trickled away like rainwater in the trees.

She gathered her books and left the classroom with everyone else.

The corridors were flooded with students. Weiss pushed her way through them but was stopped at the exit and handed a yearbook.

“Beacon High - 1955” were the words proudly displayed on the front. A monochrome photo of the year’s seniors smiled up at her. Weiss gave it a contemptuous look. She had always thought the yearbooks were pointless.

Abruptly, the book was grabbed from her with familiar hands.

“Weiss! Where am I? Where am I? Did you see my quote?” An energetic voice said.

“You don’t have a quote, Ruby. That’s just for people leaving school.” Another voice said, more calmly.

“I know Penny… I wish I did though… All I have is a stupid photo,”

“I think it looks nice,” Ruby laughed. “You’re just saying that because you love me,” She retorted.

Weiss grabbed the book from Ruby again, shoving it in her bag. “That’s not important right now. I’ve planned a big day ahead of us.”

“Aww Weiss,” Ruby said, following her girlfriend, who was now striding towards her car. “You didn’t,”

“Get in the car you two. No, Ruby, you know the rules! Sit in the back,”

Ruby clung to Wiess’ seat the whole car ride, trying to be included in the conversation, even though Weiss and Penny were talking about school work, which wasn't something Ruby was interested in. But she still liked to be included.

“Guys….” Ruby moaned. “Why are you talking about schoolwork? We’re on summer vacation. No work for six whole weeks!”

“I like comparing notes, Ruby,” Penny said. “It’s the best way to learn more!”

Penny opened the car door and stepped out. “I’ll change quickly!” She shouted, running into the apartment.

Ruby and Weiss drove on. Ruby stretched out, the summer breeze browning across her face.

The car slowed at Ruby’s home. She hopped out, running through the door.

Weiss drove on, letting her hair down, billowing in the wind. A moment of freedom before her father.

She tried not to look at him when she walked through the house. But he was always there, intruding, asking questions.

“What are you doing, Weiss? Where are you going? Why are you dressed like that?”

Weiss looked down at her outfit. She was wearing a pair of blue denim jeans and a cropped white shirt, tied at the front. Her hair was tied in a ponytail at the back of her head with a blue ribbon. She had on her new red-heeled sandals, red earrings, and a blue necktie.

“I’m just going out, Father.”

“Who with? A boy?”

“There's no boy, Father. I’m just going out with my… friends.” She slipped past him before he could question anything else.
