Work Text:

The sound of Sapnap leaving the call brings the happy vibes to a halt and seriousness begins to crown Dream’s brain.

“Hi,” George says, voice small and quiet.

“Hi,” Dream returns.

There is silence for a moment and Dream can hear the sound of his heart beating.

“Do you want to switch to a private call?” he asks.

“Yeah, we can.”

George leaves the call first, leaving Dream alone before he ends it.

He makes his way over slowly to his messages with George, staring at the most recent one.

Dream
when sapnap leaves, can we talk
it’s pretty serious

Dream hovers his cursor over the call button, debating whether or not he wanted to press it when the ringing begins echoing through his headset.

He presses answer.

“So?” George asks once Dream joins the call.

“So.”

The silence dances between them like sunlight reflecting off the clear water.

“Do you want me to turn my camera on?”

Dream clears his throat. “If you want to. Doesn’t really matter to me.”

A few seconds later, George’s face appears on his monitor. George’s perfect brown eyes that have captivated Dream since the minute that he first saw them.

“What did you want to talk about?”

“Can I just have a minute to collect my thoughts?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

Slowly, Dream goes over the list of bullet points in his head about what he wanted to say.

“Okay,” he sighs. “I’m ready.”

“Wait, before you start can I-”

Dream cuts him off. “After?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. Well I’ve been thinking a lot recently. About us.”

Dream hears George sigh softly.

“What about us?”

“About all of it.”

“What does that- What do you mean by that?”

“I mean- Fuck. This is so hard to say. George, I really like you. I’m sure that’s obvious, but it’s so fucking hard and it hurts so much. But there is no way that I don’t want you in my life.”

“I like you too. You know this already.”

“George, I have a question for you.”

“What is it?” George asks tentatively.

“What do you see me as?”

“What do I see you as?”

“Yeah.”

“I see you as my best friend I guess. We’re not dating or anything so I don’t see you as my boyfriend.”

Dream’s heart just about stops when he hears that.

“I would really like to be able to see you as my boyfriend though,” George adds quickly. “But if I’m honest, it’s really hard to see you as anything when I don’t know what you look like.

“That’s,” Dream laughs. “That’s really fair. Do you want to know what I see you as? I see you as my soulmate. Be it romantic or platonic, although definitely more on the romantic side. I see you as a person who was made for me.”

“You’re my other half,” George whispers as a light dusting of pink begins to spread across his cheeks. “I like that better than what I said.”

“Exactly. But it’s painful when your other half lives on the other side of the world.

“I’ll be there, one day.”

“Soon I hope.”

“It’ll be soon, promise.”

“Is it okay if we stop this here?” Dream asks. “Thinking about you being so far away kind of makes me sad. And I don’t want to be sad tonight.”

“You don’t have to justify yourself. If you want to be done, then we can be done. D’you wanna go to sleep?”

“No. I’m okay to sit here and talk to you.”

“Okay. But talking to me means you let me say one small thing about what we were just talking about.”

Dream’s hands start to tremble, partly out of nervousness for what George has to say and partly out of an overwhelming amount of emotions that were coursing throughout his body.

“I thought I said I was done with this conversation, Dream laughs softly.

The blond’s heart flutters at the way his laugh elicits a small chuckle and puts a smile on George’s face.

“It’s a positive thing. You’ll like it.”

“Then the floor is yours.”

George draws in a slow breath. “Dream, my visa was approved.”
